I Objectives:

1 Knowledge: by the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to know how to:

- pronounce and distinguish 3 clusters / r /, / spl / , / spr /

- understand the use of relative clauses replaced by participles and To-

infinitive

2 Skill: speaking, writing, reading

II. Teaching aids: textbook, hand-out, projector

III. Methods: communicative approach

IV Procedure:

I Stabilization ( 1 min)

II Check- up( 3 mins): Write the sentences

using the cues below:

1 The chart/ show/ energy consumption/

Highland/ 2000

2 Petroleum/ make/ the largest amount/ this

figure

3 This/ follow/ the consumption/ coal

III.Warm- up( 3 mins):

My favorite seafood is _shrimp

The cake _splits _ into two smaller parts

Peach flowers are greeting _spring _

- T checks up the old lesson Key answer:

1 The chart shows the energy consumption in Highland in 2000

2 Petroleum made up the largest amount of this figure

3 This was followed by the consumption of coal

V Grammar

A.Present Participial phrase( 4 mins): (V-ing)

Ex: 1 The girl is Lan She’s playing with the dog

 The girl who is playing with the dog is Lan

 The girl playing with the dog is Lan

2 The man who spoke to John is my brother

 The man speaking to John is my brother

*Note: - We can use present participle to replace a

relative clause in case the sentence has active

meaning.

- We reduce relative clause by omitting

relative pronoun, then we use the main verb

infinitive+ ING

* Formula 1: relative pronoun + V(active)

V-ing

* Task 1(6 mins) :Rewrite the following sentences,

using a present participial phrase

* Key answer:

1 The boy playing the piano is Ben

2 Do you know the woman coming toward us?

3 The people waiting for the bus in the rain are

getting wet

4 The scientists researching the causes of

cancer are making progress

5 The fence surrounding our house is made of

wood

6 We have an apartment overlooking the park

B Past Participial Phrase (3mins): (V-ed )

Ex: 1 That book is interesting It was written by

- T asks Ss to look at the screen

- T reads first and asks the whole class to repeat

- T calls on some Ss to read again

- T asks Ss to look at the screen to listen and repeat after the teacher

- T calls on some Ss to read

- T gives two sentences

- T asks Ss to combine these sentences

- Ss answer and T gives feedback

- Ss have been learnt how to reduce form of relative clauses,

by using V-ing

- T gives the formula of present participle phrase

- Ss take notes in their notebook

- T asks Ss to do the task 1 in the textbook by individually

- T calls on some Ss to write their answer on the board/ read loudly

in the front of the whole class

- T corrects

*Note: - We can use past participle to replace a

relative clause in case the sentence has passive

meaning.

- We reduce relative clause by omitting

relative pronoun and TO BE, then we use the verb

in the form of V3 / V-ed.

* Formula 2: relative pronoun +BE + V3/ V-ed

 V3/ V-ed

* Task 2: (6 mins) Rewrite the following sentences,

by using a past participial phrase

* Key answer:

1 The ideas presented in that book are

interesting

2 I come from a city located in the southern part

of the country

3 They live in the house built in 1890

4 The photographs published in the newspaper

were extraordinary

5 The experiment conducted at the University of

Chicago was successful

6 They work in the hospital sponsored by the

government

C Infinitive phrase (To-infinitive)(4 mins)

Ex: 1.Yuri Gagarin was the first man He flew into

space

 Yuri Gagarin was the first man who flew into

space

 Yuri Gagarin was the first man to fly into space

2 The only one is a good student He can understand

this lesson

 The only one who can understand this lesson is a

good student

 The only one to understand this lesson is a good

student

*Note: - We often use To-infinitive to replace a

relative clause after an ordinal number (The first /

- T gives two sentences

- Ss are required to combine these sentences

- T gives feedback

- Ss learn relative clauses by past participle phrase

- T gives notes and formula to Ss

- Ss write notes in their notebook

- Ss work in individually to do task 2 in the textbook

 to infinitive/ to be V3/ V-ed

* Task 3: (6 mins) Rewrite the following sentences,

using an infinitive phrase

1 John was the last man to reach the top of the

mountain

2 The last person to leave the room must turn

off the light

3 The first person to see is Mr Smith

4 This is the second person to kill is that way

5 The first person to catch the ball will be the

winner

1 Production: ( home work)( 1 min)

+ practice reading the words and the sentences

again at least twice at home
