American writers His real name was Samuel

Longhorn Clemens He was born in Missouri in

1835 He grew up on the banks of the Mississippi

River He started writing during the civil war He

worked as a newspaperman in Nevada and

california In 1870, Mark Twain married Olivia

Langdon His wife had great influence on his

books Mark Twain was also a famous lecturer He

travelled around the country, giving talks on a

variety of subjects His best novels are “ The

Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and “ Huckleberry

Finn” and another novel “ Life on the

Mississippi” which told of his adventures on the

river boats of his era His last novel was written in

1909 He died at the age of 75.
