Period 84: Language focus Class 11Lý Room: 26 Thur, April, 6 th , 2010

I Aims: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to:

- Ss will be able to distinguish the 4 sounds:

- know how to use the conjunctions: both… and, not only … but also, either… or, neither… nor exactly

- know how to use “cleft sentences in the passive”

II Materials: Textbook, posters, pictures

III Procedure

 Warm up: (4’) Jumble words Group work

- T: Deliver the handout and ask Ss to work in group of 4 or 5 to find out jumble words in the

handout

- Ss: Find out the words

- T: Check with the whole class

Key: Boots, Bands, Watched, Changed

- T: Underline some letters in these 4 words: Boots, Bands, Watched, Changed and asks Ss

whether they know how pronounce these words

- T: Lead in the pronunciation section.

A Pronunciation (10’)

- T: Explain how to pronounce:

/ts/ =>/ts/ ; /d/ =>/dz/ ; /ched/=> /t∫t/ ; / ged/=>/dʒd/

- T: Read the words aloud and ask Ss to listen and repeat:

/ts/ /dz/ / t∫t/ /dzd/

- T: Deliver the following handout and ask Ss to circle the word whose underlined part is

pronounced differently from the other words

1 Conjunctions (15’)

 Presentation:

- T: Ask one ss to stand up and answers the questions:

Ex 1: Loi, where are you from? (I am from Hue city)

Tam, where are you from? (I am from hue city)

- T: Write the sentence on b/b: “Loi is from Hue city Tam is also from Hue city.”

Then ask Ss to combine these sentences into 1 sentence

- Ss: Go to b/b to write the answers

Expected answer: Both Loi and Tam are from Hue city

Ex 2: Both the Titanic film is very interesting and the actors are beautiful

- T: Elicit to work out the form and meaning:

Form: Both + phrase or clause + and + phrase or clause

Meaning: vừa….vừa, cả…lẫn…

b Not only but also: The same steps

Ex1: Loi is intelligent He is hard working, too.

Loi is not only intelligent but also hardworking.

Ex 2: Michael Jackson is my idol He has many fans.

Not only Michael Jackson is my idol but also he has many fans.

Form: Not only + phrase or clause + but also + phrase or clause

Meaning: không những mà còn

c Either…or;

Ex 1: On Sunday, he stays at home, sometimes he goes to school.

On Sunday he either stays at home or goes to school

Ex 2: If you say anything, I will kill you.

Either you keep silent or I will kill you.

Form: Either + phrase or clause + or + phrase or clause

Meaning: hoặc hoặc

d Neither…nor.

- T: Ask Ss about the opposite of structure either or & ask them to give example

- T: Elicit the form & meaning

Form: Neither + phrase or clause + nor + phrase or clause

Meaning: không cái này… cũng không cái kia

- T: Ask Ss to work in pairs and circle the best answers in the handout in 3’

1 I left it on the table in the drawer.

2 She hard but also gets on well with her classmates.

2 Cleft sentence in passive (10’)

- T: Show a valentine card and ask Ss: ‘what is this?”  It is valentine card

“Can you guess who sent to me?”  My boyfriend sent the valentine card to me

- T: Write the sentence on b/b and ask Ss to write the sentence into cleft sentence with

underline word → It was the valentine card that my boyfriend sent to me

- T: Ask Ss to rewrite the sentence in passive

It was the valentine card that was sent to me by my boyfriend

- T: Elicit the form

 Practice

- T: Deliver handout & ask Ss to change the sentences into cleft sentences in the passive

1 People talked a lot about this book

2 Fans gave Christina lot of flowers

3 My mother sent me this ring on my birthday

4 She lost the wallet on the bus

5 My bother bought this dirt bike yesterday

Key: 1 It was the book that was talked a lot

2 It was Christina who was given lot of flowers by fans

3 It was the ring that was sent to me on my birthday

4 It was the wallet that was lost on the bus by her

5 It was this dirt bike that was bought by him yesterday

C Production (5’) Make sentences Group work

- T: Show 4 pictures one by one and ask Ss to make sentences based on the pictures in group

of 6 in 4’

- Ss: Say loud the answers

- T: Give feedback

Expected answer:

1 Both My Tam and Lam Truong are famous singers.

2 She will travel to either China or Japan

3 It is Marry who was received a flower by Peter.

4 He has got neither the car nor the money

D Home work (1’)

- do exercise on p.162

- prepare the next lesson: unit 15- reading
