I OBJECTIVES:

1 Education aim: Help students pronounce two vowel sounds /e/ and /æ/ Usage of the past perfect tense

2 Knowledge:

- General knowledge: Compare the usage between the past perfect tense to past simple

- Language: Help students pronounce two vowel sounds /e/ and /æ/

3 Skills: How to distinguish between two sounds /e/ and /æ/

II METHOD: Mainly communicative

III TEACHING AIDS: Textbook, chalk, board, …

IV PROCEDURES:

1 Class organization:

 Greeting

 Checking the attendance

2 Check up: (5’)

T calls on one or two students to go to the board to read his/ her paragraph

3 Presenting the new lesson:

I WARM-UP (5’)

list all words which it belongs to: saw, hear, looked,

written, done, go, gone, hit, slept, speak

* Expected Answers

Verb infinitive: hear, speak, go

Past form: saw, hit, looked

Past participle: written, done, gone, slept

II PRONUNCIATION (5’)

Notes:

1 fat, man, has, red, pen

2 handbag, sent, Helen

3 Sam, said, apples, very, expensive, then

4 there, ten, pan, shelf

5 Ben, sat, bench, yellow, cat

6 Ann, never, gets, bad, marks, French

III Grammar

The past perfect (10’)

* Form:

(+) S + had +V(pp) + O

(-) S + had not ( hadn’t) + V(pp) + O

(?) Had + S + V(pp) +O?

→ Yes, S + had

→ No, S + hadn’t

Ex: + When I arrived at the club, the meeting had started

+ I had done all my homework before 7 p m last night

* Expected Answers:

To describe an action before another past action

To describe an action before a point of time in the past

T gives some words on the board and asks Ss

to list all words which it belongs to: saw,

hear, looked, written, done, go, gone, hit, slept, speak

T calls Ss to read their answers aloud

T corrects mistakes if necessary and introduce the new lesson to the whole class

T asks Ss to read all new words including /e / and / æ /

T reads the words aloud and asks Ss to repeat chorally
