Period 3: REPORTED SPEECH WITH INFINITIVE

I Objectives:

By the end of the lesson Ss are able:

- To know how to use reported speech with infinitive properly

II Materials:

- Handout, guide book

III Anticipated problems:

Ss may confuse with skill tasks, so T should ready to assist them

13’ 1.Presentation

- Review reported speech with infinitives

- Give Ss some examples of direct speech, and then helps them to change them into indirect speech, using infinitives

* Form:

We use to-infinitive in reported speech (commands, requests,

invitations, advice) as follows

a S + V + to-infinitive

Verbs: agree, offer, promise, refuse, threaten…

E.g.: Direct: “I’m not going to walk all that way”, said Gary.

> Indirect: Gary refused to walk all that way.

a S + V + O + to-infinitive

Verbs: advise, ask, beg, command, encourage, forbid, invite, order, recommend, remind, request, tell, urge, warn…

E.g.: Direct: “Would you like to stay at our house”, Mark said to us > Indirect: Mark invited us to stay at his house.

Some more examples:

1 “Get out of the room”, she said

> She told me to get out of the room.

2 “Could you carry some bags, Mike?”

>She asked Mike to carry some bags.

3 “Would you like to have dinner with us?”

> They invited me to have diner with them.

4 “Please do send me to a warm climate”, he asked/begged

> He asked/ begged us to send him to a warm climate.

5 “Don’t swim out too far, boys”, I said

> I warned the boys not to swim out too far.

6 “You had better hurry, Bill!”, she said

> She advised Bill to hurry.

- T should remind Ss that time and place references often have to change in reported speech

- Ask Ss compare their answers with a partner

- Call on some Ss to go to the board and write the answers

- Ask other Ss to comment and give correct answers
