Lesson 2: A closer look 1

A Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students can:

- pronounce correctly the sounds / әu / and / Λ / in isolation and in context

- use the combinations: to study, to have, to do, to play + Noun

B Language focus:

- Grammar: the present simple and the present continuous.

- Vocabulary: school subjects: physics, history, library ; judo,

C Teaching aids: board, tape, pictures, textbook, ….

D Procedure:

I Warm up (8m)

- Write down vocabulary about school things and school subjects as quick as possible

(groupwork)

1 Vocabulary (15m)

* Exercise 1

- Play the recording and let Ss listen

- Play it again and pause for them to repeat each word

- Call some ss to read the words individually

- Correct their pronunciation

* Exercise 2

- Let Ss work in pairs, putting the words in 1 into groups Then check their answers

=> Explain to them which words go with each verb

- play: football / music (the guitar, volleyball, )

- do: homework / judo / exercises

- have: school lunch / lessons

- study: physics / English / history / vocabulary / science

* Exercise 3

- Tell Ss to do the task individually

- Call some Ss to write on the board, then check their answers

- Key: 1 homework 2 football 3 lessons

4 judo 5 science

* Exercise 4 Writing sentences

- Ask Ss to write sentences about themselves in their notebooks, using the combinations above they can write as many sentences as possible

Ex: I / We have English lessons on Tuesday and Thursday

I do judo every afternoon

2 Pronunciation (20m)

* Exercise 5 Listen and repeat the sounds / әu / and / ә /

- Let Ss practise the sounds / әu / and / Λ / together Ask Ss to observe the T’s lip positions for these two sounds

- Play the recording and ask Ss to listen and repeat Play the tape as many times as necessary

* Exercise 6 Listen to the words and put them into two groups / әu / and / Λ /

- Play the recording twice and ask ss to work individually Then let them check their answers in groups

- Call some Ss to write their answers on the board => Correct their mistakes

- Key: Sound / әu / rode / don't / hope / homework / post

Sound / Λ / some / Monday / month / come / one

* Exercise 6 Listen and repeat Underline the words / әu / and / Λ / you hear.

- Get Ss to listen and underline the sounds / әu / and / Λ / in the following sentences

- Play the recording Let Ss repeat sentence by sentence Help them recognize the two sounds, then underline them in the sentences

1 They are going to open a new library

2 I'm coming home from school

3 His brother eats lunch in the school canteen

4 The new school year starts next month

5 My brother is doing his homework

6 He goes to the judo club every Sunday.

III Homework (2m)

- Ask ss to: + practice the sound: / әu / and / Λ /

+ do exercises 1 and 2 on page 4 in the workbook for homework

+ prepare part “A closer look 2” for the next lesson
