Mickey Mantle was one of the greatest baseball players of all time He played for the New York Yankees in their years of glory From the time Mantle began to play professionally in 1951 to his last year in 1968, baseball was the most popular game in the United States For many people, Mantle symbolized the hope, prosperity, and confidence of America at the time
Mantle was a fast and powerful player, a “switch-hitter” who could bat both right-handed and left-handed He won game after game, one World Series championship after another, for his team He was a wonderful athlete, but
this alone cannot explain America’s fascination with him
Perhaps it was because he was a handsome, red-haired country boy, the son of a poor miner from Oklahoma His career, from the lead mines of the West to the heights of success and fame, was a fairy-tale version of the American dream Or perhaps it was because America always loves a “natural”: a person who wins without seeming to try, whose talent appears to come from an inner grace That was Mickey Mantle
But like many celebrities, Mickey Mantle had a private life that was full of problems He played without complaint despite constant pain from injuries He lived to fulfill his father’s dreams and drank to forget his father’s early death
It was a terrible addiction that finally destroyed his body It gave him cirrhosis of the liver and accelerated the
advance of liver cancer Even when Mickey Mantle had turned away from his old life and warned young people not to follow his example, the destructive process could not be stopped Despite a liver transplant operation that had all those who loved and admired him hoping for a recovery, Mickey Mantle died of cancer at the age of 63

Comets move around the sun and have a very bright head and a long tail Many meteors seem to be fragments
of comets (40) crashed into one another Other meteors are tiny particles from the tails of comets Some meteors are iron and some are stone
Once in a while, an extra bright meteor, or fireball, appears Fireballs can sometimes be seen (41) the day and may even be as bright as the full moon Some meteors survive their fall through the Earth’s atmosphere and land on the ground These are called meteorites, (42) are usually cool enough to touch when they land

The biologist's role in society as well as his moral and ethical responsibility in the discovery and development
of new ideas has led to a reassessment of his social and scientific value systems A scientist can no longer ignore
Trang 4Trang 4/4 - Mã đề thi 216
the consequences of his discoveries; he is as concerned with the possible misuses of his findings as he is with the basic research in which he is involved This emerging social and political role of the biologist and all other scientists requires a weighing of values that cannot be done with the accuracy or the objectivity of a laboratory balance As a member of society, it is necessary for a biologist now to redefine his social obligations and his functions, particularly in the realm of making judgments about such ethical problems as man's control of his environment or his manipulation of genes to direct further evolutionary development
As a result of recent discoveries concerning hereditary mechanisms, genetic engineering, by which human
traits are made to order, may soon be a reality As desirable as it may seem to be, such an accomplishment would
entail many value judgments Who would decide, for example, which traits should be selected for change? In cases of genetic deficiencies and diseases, the desirability of the change is obvious, but the possibilities for social
misuse are so numerous that they may far outweigh the benefits
Probably the greatest biological problem of the future, as it is of the present, will be to find ways to curb environmental pollution without interfering with man's constant effort to improve the quality of his life Many
scientists believe that underlying the spectre of pollution is the problem of surplus human population A rise in
population necessitates an increase in the operations of modern industry, the waste products of which increase the pollution of air, water, and soil The question of how many people the resources of the Earth can support is one of critical importance
Although the solutions to these and many other problems are yet to be found, they do indicate the need for biologists to work with social scientists and other members of society in order to determine the requirements necessary for maintaining a healthy and productive planet Although many of man's present and future problems
may seem to be essentially social, political, or economic in nature, they have biological ramifications that could
affect the very existence of life itself
Câu 43: What is the author's purpose in this passage?
A To emphasize the biologist's role in solving the world's problems
B To conduct a survey of the biologist's role in society
C To urge biologists to solve the problem of surplus human population
D To advise biologists to carry out extensive research into genetic engineering
Câu 44: According to the passage, a modern scientist should be more concerned about _
A the consequences of his discoveries
B the development of new ideas
C his manipulation of genes
D his basic research
Câu 45: The pronoun "they" in paragraph 2 refers to _
A discoveries concerning hereditary mechanisms
B effects of genetic engineering misuse
C cases of genetic deficiencies
D possibilities for genetic deficiencies
Câu 46: What is probably the most important biological problem mentioned in the passage?
A social and economic deficiencies B environmental pollution
C manipulation of genes D genetic engineering misuse

A on social and political purposes
B accurately and objectively
C harder and harder

-Câu 50: It is implied in the passage that genetic engineering _
A is the most desirable for life B may do us more harm than good
C will change all human traits D is no longer desirable
