Tips for writing (write 220 – 260 words)

Before you start to write:

- You should spend at least10 minutes planning your writing Your answers should be well-organized with clear linking between sentences and paragraphs You do not have time for a draft, so plan your

answers properly

- You must check: who are you writing to? Should you use a formal or informal style? Who is your target

reader? ( the target reader is given in the task, so read the instructions carefully)

- You must decide what layout you need for the task, especially when you are writing a proposal,

competition entry or a book review

- Decide these following things: what is the content? Range of grammar and vocabulary, register (formal/

informal or neutral), organization and cohesion (linking words/ phrases) and target reader

After you have finished reading:

- Leave yourself enough time to read through your answer to check grammar and spelling You can use British or American spelling, but try not to mix them up

- Check of you have included all the content points necessary for the task and if you have included enough detail on each point

- Check that you have used all the language functions required, and have used a range of appropriate language

- Make sure your answers is not too short Try to get as near the specified number of words as possible, as

this is all part of the task

- Don‟t write a lot more than the number of words specified If you do, you will probably include

irrelevant things and this will lose you marks as it will have a negative effect on the target reader

More specific tips

- How well you do the task is the most important thing Make sure you cover all the points required and give enough details to fulfil the task

- Try not to copy long phrases or sentences from the question paper You must use the ideas from the texts but try to use your own words to express them

- Make sure that you do everything that you are asked to do in the question, for example, outline the situation, make recommendations and give reasons

- Part 2 of CAE test allow you to use your imagination and be inventive It is important that you choose to answer the question that you feel most comfortable with and which allows you to show your best writing

Who is the audience? The audience will be a panel of judges These judges are usually

professors or magazine editors

What is the purpose of the writing? You are usually nominating someone for an award or

proposing a solution to a problem You need to make a persuasive argument; explaining your reasons and giving examples will help you do this

Is it formal? Yes

Trang 7

Should I use headings or bullet points? No

How should it start? The title should be clever You want to briefly explain the problem or

award in the first paragraph and give a hint to your solution

How should it finish? You should state your opinion strongly and clearly The last sentence is

very important, try to make it memorable

using the information appropriately, write your proposal for the Principal

Meeting 13 May

Suggestions for programme for overseas visitors (26 June)

 Welcome in reception area, short talk (by whom?)

 Tour of building (which parts? Length of tour?)

 Talk on what we do here (given by? What aspects?)

 Lunch (attended by?)

 Talk on the city/ local area (given by?)

 Give presents at end of day (which presents)

Other ideas:

 Split visitors up into small groups for tour

 Let them watch us doing what we do on a typical day

 Ask one or more of them to give a talk to us (about?)

 Question & Answer session (when?)

 Give them Information Pack (containing?)

 Organize an evening event as well (what?)

Need practical stuff – ‘question and answer’ panels with business people?

More info on vocational courses – especially unusual jobs Nothing to inspire us!

Same old ideas from college advisors Didn’t stay long!

Started too early – had lectures so could only go to the afternoon session

No networking opportunities – need contacts, not just information

information about jobs and further education possibilities You have been asked to write a proposal for the college principal, outlining what should be included in the day, suggesting how it should be organized and giving reasons for your recommendations Using the feedback from last year‟s event and an email from the careers officer on which you have made some notes, write your proposals

In your proposal, please take into account the

points raised in last year‟s forum – I‟m

particularly concerned that students don‟t feel

we‟re giving them what they need – we must

take the day interesting, relevant and practical

Could you consider ways of doing this?

Long day – too much information!

Useful lecture from businessman

Not enough on university courses – too much about jobs

No practical workshops – e.g practice interviews? All theory!

Waste of time- could have read leaflets at home

This proposal is important – we must get it

right otherwise we won’t be able to do it

again Please consider timings of events and

breaks and any practical issues you

think are important

It is particular important that students think

it is relevant and useful for

everyone and that there is some follow-up

favourite restaurant and boost its chances of becoming the (0)

of our Restaurant of the Year competition This is the

last time the official (2) form will appear in the paper and

next Thursday is the final date for (3) of completed

forms

Over the past few weeks we have been swamped by a paper mountain as (4) across the city jot down the compelling

reasons why they believe their (5) restaurant should

definitely win our hotly (6) competition

So far we have received more than 400 (7) forms with more than 30 restaurants nominated These votes have been

(8) spread, which makes the last week even more crucial

than usual, as we aim to find the top three to go forward to our

grand final

Once the (9) has passed, our judges will sit down and count all the forms The three restaurants which receive the

most votes will then be visited by the judges These visitors will of

course be (10) , so the restaurants themselves will now

know that the judges are there After their visits, the judges will

make their final decicion over who wins the (11) title
