A GRAMMAR AND PUNCTUATION
I/ Quotation Marks
Below are some examples of directs speech, but the quotation marks have been removed Add the quotation marks in the correct places

II/ Synonyms for said
Direct speech is a sentence in which the exact words spoken are reproduced
in quotation marks (also known as speech marks)
Example

Phillip said, “I think we're going to the movies.”
When writing dialogue (people speaking), we most often use the word said to
show that a character has spoken
This helps the reader to see who is speaking, but it can also become boring to read and it does not give us extra information about how they said something
There are many synonyms for said that not only let the reader know who is
speaking, but also give us more information They can give us an idea of how loudly or softly something was said as well as what kind of feeling it was said with

Ken and Margaret Harris, who will have been married for 80 years in November, are about to enter the Guinness Book of World Records as the UK’s longest married couple The couple first met in 1927, but were separated when Ken went to Myanmar during the conflict with Britain They got engaged and married, but only after six years - when they had £600 to buy their first house
The couple, who are both 102 years old, met in their teens as they skated on a frozen river in Northampton in the winter of 1927 Ken had left school at fifteen and started work at a local butcher shop Margaret left at fourteen and worked in a clothes factory
“I wasn’t really interested at the time, I just wanted to have fun on the ice’, said Margaret ‘Ken came up behind me and knocked me down He told me years later that he did it because he wanted
to pick me up’
But three years later, when he was eighteen, he joined the army and had to move to Burma where many of his friends were killed In 1988, Ken
published a book about his experiences there He described
feeling relieved and happy when he finally was allowed to
go home ‘Then, I knew I was going to have a life after all’
Back home in Northampton, Ken renewed his
friendship with Margaret The couple had a six-year
engagement before buying a house and getting married in
1937 Then they had two children, John and Brenda Ken

have eleven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren -
the latest one is only three years old Two years ago, they

Throughout time people all over the globe have felt a sense of wonder, amazement and peace when in nature Whether it’s a narrow creek or a thousand year old sequoia tree, nature
undoubtedly has value Human activity, however, has threatened these natural resources, reduced plant and animal biodiversity and contributed to pollution throughout ecosystems
President Woodrow Wilson knew this, so in 1916 he founded America’s National Park System (NPS) to “conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and wildlife therein, and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations.” In other words, the mission of the NPS
is to ensure that nature remains wild for the benefit of people indefinitely
Since its establishment, NPS has expanded to manage and protect over 84 million acres across the United States, an area larger than Italy Furthermore, National Park System has become a model for the world to follow in land conservation This is evident in the fact that almost 100 countries around the world now have some type of
a national park Vietnam’s first national park - Cat Ba, for example, first opened in 1986 Since then, the number of national parks in Vietnam has increased to 30
In the United States there are 62 areas protected by the
National Park System Some of the more famous parks include
the Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, the Grand Canyon
in Arizona, the Yosemite in California, to name a few Annually,
an estimated 331 million people visit national parks in the
United States, that’s about 3.5 times higher than the population
of Vietnam!
Park visitors report a gamut of health benefits associated with spending time in nature, both physical and psychological People who are active benefit from improved nervous and
cardiovascular health, less fatigue, and lower body mass index With an endless number of
physical activities available in parks such as hiking, swimming, rafting, paddling, biking and rock climbing, there is something for every member of the family to enjoy while exercising Recent studies, however, emphasize that the psychological effects of simply observing and being in nature must not be overlooked Research shows that nature helps emotion regulation, improves memory and concentration, and reduces stress and depression With so many positive effects that time outdoors has on our bodies and minds, it’s no wonder that so many people visit national parks each year
