I 1st and 3rdperson pronouns

she it

they

1st person pronouns

We use these pronouns as a sentence subject when talking about ourselves, or

about groups in which we belong

Example: I played football yesterday

Example: We played monopoly last night

Note that 'I' and 'We' are used as the subject within this sentence

Look at the following sentence Take note of the object of the sentence, “John”.

Example: I spoke to John about the homework

The object of this sentence can be changed using an object pronoun (him, her, it,

them) Look at the sentence now below

I spoke to him about the homework.

3rd person pronouns

We use third person pronouns to speak about the actions of others, singular and

plural (it, he, she, they)

We can also use the object pronouns when using 3rd person pronouns, as seen in the examples below

Trang 2

Possessive adjectives

Possessives are used to attribute ownership of nouns to both the object and

subject pronouns (my, his, her, its, our, their)

Example: I spoke to him about his homework.

II Direct speech and Indirect (reported) speech

Convert the direct speech to indirect speech.

1 “I’m hungry,” said Ben

2 “What’s the time?” asked Tina

3 “I am not happy,” shouted the furious teacher

Direct Speech:

 uses speech marks

 uses punctuation (comma,

full-stop, question mark, or

exclamation mark) before

the second speech mark

 uses the speaker’s actual

words

 new speaker, new line

Reported Speech:

 doesn’t use speech marks

 changes pronouns, and often also changes word order

 changes verb tenses (and time phrases if necessary)

 usually starts by telling you who spoke

 often uses “that…” – but you can omit it

 Sometimes other words need to be changed or added, so that the sentence makes sense

Direct speech is when you write the actual words that a person has spoken.

We show this by putting speech marks (“ ”) around the spoken words

Example: “We have contact!” said Buzz Aldrin

Indirect speech (or reported speech) is when you write about (or report)

what a person has said, without using the actual words spoken, so you don’t

need speech marks

Example: Buzz Aldrin said that they had contact

Trang 4

Convert the indirect speech to direct speech.

1 Lucy said that she was tired

2 Ronaldo said that he was the best football player in the world

3 Hulk shouted that he was so angry

Synonyms are two words that mean the same or nearly the same as each

a woman

NASA astronaut Christina Koch, who spent nearly 11 months in orbit to set a record for the longest spaceflight

by a woman, has landed safely back on Earth with her two International Space Station crewmates.

It is hoped the pioneering 328-day voyage by Koch, 41, will provide new insights into deep-space travel Koch was with Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano and Russian cosmonaut Alexander Skvortsov when their space capsule parachuted back to Earth in the Kazakh desert in Kazakhstan on Friday.

“I’m just so overwhelmed and happy right now,” Koch said, sitting in a chair wrapped in blankets as she waited to be carried into a medical tent to restore her balance in gravity.

Space experts said the three astronauts were all in good shape.
