Read the passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the following questions.

There is a common expression in the English language referring to ablue moon When people say that something happens "only once in ablue moon," they mean that it happens only very rarely, once in a greatwhile This expression has been around for at least a century and a half;there are references to this expression that date from the second half ofthe nineteenth century

The expression "a blue moon" has come to refer to the secondfullmoon occurring in any given calendar month A second full moon isnot called a blue moon because it is particularly blue or is any.different

in hue from the first full moon of the month Instead, it is called a blue,

moon because it is so rare The moon needs a little more than 29 days

to complete the cycle from full moon to full moon Because every monthexcept February has more than 29 days, every month will have at leastone full moon (except February, which will have a full moon unlessthere is a full moon at the very end of January and another full moon atthe very beginning of March) It is on the occasion when a givencalendar month has a second full moon that a blue moon occurs Thisdoes not happen very often, only three or four times in a decade

The blue moons of today are called blue moons because of theirrarity and not because of their color; however, the expression "bluemoon" may have come into existence in reference to unusualcircumstances in which the moon actually appeared blue Certainnatural phenomena of gigantic proportions can actually change theappearance of the moon from Earth The eruption of the Krakatoavolcano in 1883 left dust particles in the atmosphere, which clouded thesun and gave the moon a bluish tint This particular occurrence of the

blue moon may have given rise to the expression that we use today.

Another example occurred more than a century later When Mount

MODERN SURGERY

The need for a surgical operation, especially an emergencyoperation, almost always comes as a severe shock to the patient andhis family Despite modern advances, most people still have anirrational fear of hospitals and anesthetics Patients do not often believethey really need surgery— cutting into a part of the body as opposed totreatment with drugs

In the early years of the twentieth century there was littlespecialization in surgery A good surgeon was capable of performingalmost every operation that had been devised up to that time Todaythe situation is different Operations are now being carried out thatwere not even dreamed of 60 years ago The heart can be safetyopened and its valves repaired Clogged blood vessels can be cleanedout, arid broken ones mended or replaced A lung, the whole stomach,

or even part of the brain can be removed and still permit the patient tolive a comfortable and satisfactory life However, not every surgeonwants to, or is qualified to carry out every type of modern operation

3

2

Trang 33

The scope of surgery has increased remarkably Its safety hasincreased too The hospital stay after surgery has been shortened to aslittle as a week for most major operations.

Many developments in modern surgery are almost incredible Theyinclude the replacement of damaged blood vessels with stimulated onesmade of plastic; the replacement of heart valves with plasticsubstitutes; the transplanting of tissues such as the lens of the eye; theinvention of the artificial kidney to clean the blood of poisons at regularintervals and the development of heart and lung machines to keeppatients alive during very long operations All these things open ahopeful vista for the future of surgery

One of the most revolutionary areas of modern surgery is that oforgan transplants Until a few years ago, no person, except an identicaltwin, was able to accept into his body the tissues of another personwithout reacting against them and eventually killing them Recently, however, it has been discovered that with the use of X-rays and specialdrugs, it is possible to graft tissues from one person to another whichwill survive for periods of a year or more Kidney's have beensuccessfully transplanted between non-identical twins Heart and lungtransplants have been reasonably successful in animals, thoughrejection problems in human have yet to be solved

"Spare parts" surgery, the simple routine replacement of all

worn-out organ by new ones, is still a dream of the distant future Asyet, surgery is not ready for such miracles In the machine, you can behappy if your doctor says to you 'Yes, I think it is possible to operate onyou for this condition.'
