Motivation

Have you ever been in a situation in which you needed to do something, but you just weren’t motivated enough to do it? We often talk about “being motivated,” (25) have you ever thought about exactly what that means?

At any given time, your behavior can be explained by one or more motives — needs or desires (26) direct behavior toward a goal Motives can arise from an internal source, such as when you keep studying because you find the subject matter (27) When

activities are pursued as ends in themselves — simply because they are enjoyable or satisfying, and not because any external reward is attached — the type of motivation we (28) is known as intrinsic motivation Other motives come from outside sources, when some external incentive influences you to act For example, when you study because you want to get a good grade or to avoid a bad grade, the grade is (29) as an incentive When we act in order to gain some external reward or to avoid some undesirable consequence, we are pulled by

extrinsic motivation

Remembering Memories

Most people wish they had better memories They also worry about forgetting things as they get older But did you know that we have different kinds of memory? When one or more of these kinds of memories start to fail, there are a few simple things that everyone can do to improve their memories

What most people think of as memory is, in fact, five different categories of

memory Our capability to remember things from the past, that is, years or days ago,

depends on two categories of memory They are remote memory and recent memory,

respectively Think back to last year’s birthday What did you do? If you can’t remember that, you are having a problem with your remote memory On the other hand, if you can't remember what you ate for lunch yesterday, that is a problem with your recent memory

Remembering past events is only one way we use memories When taking a test, we need to draw on our semantic memories That is the sum of our acquired knowledge Or maybe

we want to remember to do or use something in the future, either minutes or days from now These cases use our immediate and prospective memories, respectively Have you ever

thought to yourself, "I need to remember to turn off the light,” but then promptly forgot it? That would be a faulty immediate memory On the other hand, maybe you can easily remember to meet your friend for lunch next week That means that at least your prospective memory is in good working order

Trang 4

Many people think that developing a bad memory is unavoidable as we get older, but this

is actually not the case Of our five kinds of memory, immediate, remote, and prospective (if

our semantic and unaided prospective memories? The secret seems to be activity Studies

have shown that a little mental activity, like learning new things or even doing crossword

appears to be able to make our memories better as well This is possibly due to having a better blood supply to the brain The one thing to avoid at all costs, though, is stress When we are stressed, our bodies release a hormone called cortisol, which is harmful to our brain cells and thus our memories Reducing stress through meditation, exercise, or other activities can help to preserve our mental abilities

Question 30: What is the main focus of this reading?

A Types of human memory B Functions of brain chemicals

C Tricks for remembering things D How to stay active

Question 31: Which category of memory would you use to remember where your car keys are?

A Immediate memory B Recent memory

C Remote memory D Semantic memory

Question 32: Which of the following would positively affect your memory?

The Great Energy Debate

Modern civilization is heavily dependent on energy Without reliable power sources, we couldn’t operate machines, use transportation, communicate via the Internet, or do many other things Although everyone recognizes the importance of energy, deciding what kind of energy the world should use in the future is not a simple task The two leading candidates for this role are green energy and nuclear energy

Currently, most of the energy we use is derived from fossil fuels Although this energy

source has got us this far, there are several problems with it For starters, it is a finite resource which is quickly running out Some analysts have even estimated that the Earth could run out of coal and oil within the next 50 years Burning fossil fuels also creates large amount of pollution, which is harmful to the environment Although fossil fuels still provide the majority of our power, governments are seeking better energy sources to use going forward

Green energy is one option that is becoming increasingly attractive It includes

technologies such as solar, wind, and hydro power These are seen as clean sources of energy

because they cause very little pollution In addition, they are completely renewable, so there is

no danger that it will run out The major disadvantage with green energy sources is that they are not cheap

Trang 5

The other alternative is nuclear power Like green energy, it is also a renewable source

of power that will not run out, and it also doesn’t produce air pollution In addition, nuclear power

is more reliable than green energy, as it doesn’t depend on sunshine, rain, or wind to operate The major issues with nuclear power are safety concerns and nuclear waste Nuclear power plants create a considerable amount of nuclear waste which is extremely hazardous to people’s health If they happen to have a meltdown, this could destroy the surrounding area for years to come

The recent nuclear disaster in Fukushima, Japan brought this reality into the spotlight once

again In response, Germany announced it would close down eight of its nuclear plants

immediately, and close the rest by 2022 Meanwhile, other nations refuse to give up on nuclear power, stating that these disasters are rare The debate of whether to use green or nuclear power will likely continue for some time In the end, it is quite possible that both energy sources will be used to fuel our planet
