Creating a Peaceful School

SOCIAL BULLYING

When you arrive at Middle, Junior, or High School you will have

to face the MEAN TEENS that are your peers at school This problem can seem worse when you first get to a new school.

Making people hurt is sick! Shame and humiliation is not

necessary Everybody should be able to come to school and not have to worry about being teased, picked on, left out, tricked, or threatened.

The first step in making your school free from social bullying is

to start thinking and talking about it Most students handle these issues among themselves Adults usually are around, but not involved in the day-to-day bullying.

This workbook is designed to stimulate thinking, writing, and talking about social bullying Stand up for safe and creative

schools for yourself and your friends Try to become aware of social or relational aggression IN YOUR SCHOOL When you see a peer being bullied, notice it, think about it, and somehow get involved Do not just watch, the next victim may be YOU or someone you care about.

Teachers are trying to be helpful Students have to start the

process and use the teachers as helpers in creating a safe school.

What is Social Aggression?

It is humiliating and shaming a peer.

• Teasing- Public verbal put-downs that make a peer feel shame in front of

other peers.

• Rumors- Targeting someone with mean and untrue stories that make a

peer feel humiliated behind their back.

• Ostracism- Knowingly leaving a peer out of group activities.

• Harassment- Reheated, unwanted social and/or physical contact

between peers.

• Mean Tricks- Planned public humiliations causing a peer to be publicly

shamed or made fun of.

• Physical Bullying- Pushing, tripping, grabbing, poking, holding,

pinch-ing, sex grabs.

• Threatening or Hate Speech- Targeting an individual or group with

threats of violence or physical harm.

• Intimidation- Face to face threat that causes fear or public humiliation.

• Exploitation- Taking advantage of a weaker peer and taking money,

ser-vices, or favors in exchange for a fake friendship.

• Intolerance and Hate- Peers who express and condone racist, sexist, or

other intolerant ideas that target specific groups.
