Trang 5Have you ever w ondered w h a t it w o u ld be like to have a
b ro th e r or a sister w h o looked ju s t like you? Maybe you
are a tw in Holly and Daisy Preston, 14-year-old tw in s from
London, say there's n o th in g like it.'I feel really special,'says
Holly Daisy agrees and adds,'It's fantastic having som eone
w h o understands you c o m p le te ly 'If you are a tw in , you
pro b a b ly kn o w w h a t th e y are ta lk in g about!
Scientists th in k tw in s are great, too, b u t fo r diffe re n t
reasons They give scientists a u nique o p p o rtu n ity to fin d
o u t w h a t makes us w h o we are That's because tw in s have
m ore in com m on than brothers and sisters born at d iffe re n t
times, b u t are still d iffe re n t fro m each o th e r in im p o rta n t
ways By studying th e sim ilarities and differences betw een
tw ins, scientists can begin to fin d o u t w h ich qualities are
passed do w n fro m o u r ancestors and w h ich ones result
fro m ou r experiences in life
There are tw o kinds o f tw ins, know n as identical and
fraternal Identical tw in s are o fte n so sim ilar th a t it is
d iffic u lt to tell th e m apart Twins th a t g ro w inside th e ir
m o th e r at th e same tim e, b u t are n o t identical, are called
fraternal tw ins. These tw in s can be b o th boys, b o th girls,
o r one o f each
Identical tw in s are interesting to scientists because o f
th e ir genes, w hich d e te rm in e th e co lo u r o f th e ir hair and
eyes, th e shape o f th e ir nose and m o u th , th e ir h e ig h t
and more M ost people g e t a d iffe re n t m ixtu re o f genes
fro m th e ir parents.That explains w hy you m ig h t take after
your m other, w h ile yo u r sister takes a fte r yo u r father But
w ith identical tw ins, each one gets passed d o w n exactly
th e same genes fro m each parent That is w h a t makes
them 'identical'
Reading the exam question first
• B efore you read th e te x t, re m e m b e r to read th e exam s ta te m e n ts carefully
• M ake sure you u n d e rlin e key w o rd s in each
s ta te m e n t so you kn o w w h a t in fo rm a tio n to look for
• Read th e te x t q u ic k ly so you kn o w w h a t it is about Then read th e te x t again and lo o k fo r w o rd s th a t are sim ilar to th e w o rd s you u n d e rlin e d
• R em e m b e r th a t th e in fo rm a tio n in th e te x t is in the same o rd e r as th e statem ents
Scientists have always w ondered h o w im p o rta n t genes are Yes, th e y d e te rm in e w hich relative we look like, but
w h a t a b o u t personality? Do ou r genes co n tro l w h e th e r
w e like music o r are o u tg o in g ? Or, are ou r personalities
a result o f th e w ay w e g ro w up and th e experiences we have? Interestingly, researchers have discovered th a t both
o u r genes and o u r experiences play a role in fo rm in g our personality For exam ple, you may have a gene th a t makes you creative, b u t if y o u r e n viro n m e n t does n o t give you the chance to show yo u r creativity, it may never be revealed.Identical tw in s can show us this relationship betw een genes and environm ent If it were only o ur genes th a t influenced everything ab o u t us, identical tw in s w ould be identical in every way N ot only w ould th e y look th e same, b u t they
w o u ld like th e same kinds o f music, clothes and friends But they don't Studying such differences can help scientists to fin d o u t w h a t makes us th e same and w h a t makes us different

Welcome to Nunavik - a beautiful
landscape o f forests, blue skies and clear
waters It's a huge area w ith 14 Inuit
villages in th e Arctic area o f Canada
Wild animals, such as bears and wolves,
can be seen everywhere There are also
caribou (a kind o f reindeer), and fish fill
th e rivers, lakes and sea In summer, the
sun shines day and night, and so this
is w hen the people fish, h u n t and pick
berries W inter is cold and dark, b u t at
night, stars fill th e clear, dark sky and you
can often even see th e N orthern Lights
You m ig h t th in k th a t Nunavik's
geographical position at th e ends o f the
Earth keeps it safe from big city problem s
like air and w ater p o llu tio n U nfortunately,
th e p re tty villages o f Nunavik have n o t escaped th e problem s th a t th e rest o f the
w orld is facing, too
Some years ago, scientists made a
w o rryin g discovery An extrem ely dangerous g roup o f chemicals know n as 'persistent organic p ollutants' (or POPs) were attacking th e Arctic environm ent
There are few factories there and n o t
m any cars, so where was th e p o llu tio n com ing from? It turns o u t th a t it was com ing from cities thousands o f kilom etres away But how?
POPs are used everywhere - in TVs, in lights and in paint They are also sprayed
o nto crops as pesticides Over time, they become gas and go into th e air, and the
w ind carries them thousands o f kilometres
When they reach a cold environm ent, the gas becomes a liquid, like water So when the w ind carries POPs into the Arctic, cold tem peratures make them stick to plants and fall into the oceans, where they stay and increase over tim e POPs also collect inside th e fat o f people and animals, and they stay there forever The biggest
animals, like seals and whales, have the I most POPs in their bodies These are the I animals th a t Inuit people have been eatinj for thousands o f years
POPs can cause cancer and allergies, as well as other damage. They can also causel developmental problems in babies and | children Clearly, something had to be dorj about the problem and so in the 1990s, thf United Nations held a meeting called the I Stockholm Convention to discuss bannind lots o f the POP chemicals Since then, man countries have agreed to start producing fewer POP chemicals, and as a result, level
o f POPs in the Arctic are falling
It will take many years for the problem tog away For one thing, buildings around the I
w orld still have many tons o f POPs in theirl paint and wiring Every day, those chemicj turn into gas and enter the atmosphere, I eventually reaching the Arctic
For th e Inuit people, and all th e people and animals in th e Arctic regions, their | only hope is the w ork o f scientists andt help o f the rest o f the w orld in putting anj end to POPs once and fo r all
