their knowledge of English sounds, letters, and the
relationships between them more effectively The following
are instructions for useful game ideas to use in conjunction
with Speed Phonics A fun game is recommended as a
review activity in each unit However, feel free to use any
game at anytime you feel it is suitable
Note: Flashcards and target sound cards are provided
for games and classroom activities
• Materials: flashcards (one set/pair)
• Grouping: pairs
• Instructions:
① Select 16 flashcards and arrange them on a large table
or on the floor in a 4x4 grid
② To determine which student chooses first, have the students play rock-paper-scissors
③ Have the first student choose and read a flashcard When read correctly, they should keep the flashcard
④ Repeat steps ②-③ until the flashcards are all taken The student with more flashcards wins the game
Four in a Row
• Materials: flashcards (one set/class),
target sound cards (one set/class)
• Grouping: two teams
• Instructions:
① Put the target sound cards in a row on the table
② Spread the target flashcards out on the table with the picture side face up
③ Assign a number to each student and have the first student on each team get ready for the game
④ Ask students to put their hands on their heads
⑤ Call out a target word The first student to slam their hand on the correct picture and put the flashcard under the correct target sound gets a point for their team
⑥ Repeat steps ④-⑤ The team with more points wins the game

Target Sound Cards
• Materials: beach ball, marker
• Grouping: N/A
• Instructions:
① With the marker, write the target sounds all over the
beach ball
② While holding the ball, call out a hand and a finger (e.g
Left hand! Pinky!) Then throw the ball to a student
③ After the student catches the ball, they should say
a word that matches the target sound their finger is
touching
④ Then the student calls out a hand and a finger and
throws the ball to another student
⑤ Repeat steps ②-④ until all students have had a chance
to play
Catch the Ball
• Materials: flashcards (one set/student)
• Grouping: N/A
• Instructions:
① Have students spread the target flashcards out on the table with the picture side face up
② Call out the target sound and word
Note: By pausing between the target sound and word, you can give students a chance to quickly scan the flashcards
③ Ask students to hold up the correct flashcard above their heads
④ The student who raises the correct flashcard first gets
a point
⑤ Repeat steps ②-④ with a new word The student with the most points wins the game

the table with the word side face up
② Ask two students to stand in front of the table
③ Shout out a target sound and word The students must
race to find the corresponding flashcard
④ The first student to find and grab the flashcard and
correctly say the word gets a point
⑤ Repeat steps ②-④ The student with the most points
wins the game
Match It!
• Materials: flashcards (one set/class)
• Grouping: N/A
• Instructions:
① Spread the target flashcards out on the table with the
picture side face up
② Ask students to memorize them and then to close their
eyes Remove a flashcard while their eyes are closed
③ Once you’ve removed a flashcard, tell students to open
their eyes Tell them one flashcard is missing
④ Ask students to raise their hands once they have
identified the missing flashcard Call on one student to
say the target sound and word If correct, the student
gets a point
⑤ Repeat steps ②-④ The student with the most points
wins the game
Missing Cards
• Materials: flashcards (one set/class), whiteboard
• Grouping: N/A
• Instructions:
① Write the target sounds on the whiteboard Make sure
to space out the distance between tham
② Have students stand near the middle of the whiteboard
③ Show a flashcard with the picture side facing the students Students must carefully walk to the correct side of the whiteboard
④ Students that go to the wrong side must sit down
⑤ Repeat steps ②-④ with a new word The last student standing wins the game
Pick a Side
• Materials: flashcards (one set/class),
target sound cards (one set/class)
• Grouping: N/A
• Instructions:
① Put the target sound cards on the table
② Place the target flashcards with the picture side face
up in a pile
③ Have students take turns selecting a flashcard and
placing it on the table under the correct target sound
card
④ Repeat steps ②-③ until all the flashcards are played
Group Them!
• Materials: target sound cards (one set/class), pouch
• Grouping: N/A
• Instructions:
① Put the target sound cards in the pouch
② Pass the pouch around the classroom
③ As each student receives the pouch, they draw a target sound card and say the word that matches the target sound written on the card The student then puts the card back
Note: Encourage students to use new words and not to reuse words
④ The student who says the word correctly gets a point If the student says the wrong word, take away a point
⑤ Repeat steps ②-④ The student with the most points wins the game

Show Me!
• Materials: target sound cards (one set/class), chairs
• Grouping: two teams
• Instructions:
① Put one target sound card on each chair
② Have one student from each team come to the front
and stand behind the chairs
③ Call out a target word
④ The first student who sits on the correct chair gets a
point for their team
⑤ Repeat steps ②-③ The team with more points wins
the game

• Materials: flashcards (one set/class)

• Instructions:
① Spread the target flashcards out on the table with the picture side face up
② Ask a student to choose any flashcard and read it out loud
③ Then ask the next student to choose a flashcard, repeat the previous word, and read out their new word E.g S1: /a/ /a/ apple
S2: /a/ /a/ apple, /b/ /b/ bag
④ Repeat steps ②-③ until a student forgets a word or makes a mistake Then start over if time allows
Snowball
• Materials: flashcards (one set/class), whiteboard, markers
• Grouping: two teams
• Instructions:
① Choose one student from one team to come up to the whiteboard
② Secretly, show the student a flashcard so that the other students cannot see it
③ The student should draw a picture of the flashcard word
on the whiteboard
④ The other students will guess which word was drawn The first team to correctly guess that word gets a point for their team
⑤ Choose another student from the other team and repeat steps ②-④ with a new word The team with more
Take a Guess
• Materials: flashcards (one set/class), whiteboard, markers
• Grouping: two teams
• Instructions:
① Have two teams line up in front of the whiteboard
② When ready, show a flashcard with the picture side
facing the students
③ One student from each team runs to the whiteboard
and writes the word
④ The first student who writes the word neatly and
correctly gets a point for their team
⑤ Repeat steps ②-④ The team with more points wins
the game
• Adaptation: Tape all of the target flashcards on the
whiteboard with the picture side facing the
students Read out the target word and have
students race to touch the correct flashcard
Run to the Board
• Materials: flashcards (one set/class)
• Grouping: two teams
• Instructions:
① Spread the target flashcards out on the table with the picture side face up
② Have one student from each team come to the front and put their hands on their head
③ Call out a target sound and word The first student who slams their hand on the correct flashcard gets a point for their team

Slam the Pictures!

• Instructions:
① Have the students stand in two lines
② Have the first student from each team come and stand
next to you
③ Tell the students a target word quietly and have them
whisper the word to the next student in each of their
lines Then the students whisper the words down the
line
④ When the last student in each line hears the word, they
run to the whiteboard and write the word
⑤ The first student who writes the word correctly gets a
point for their team
⑥ The student who was first in line goes to the back of
the line
⑦ Repeat steps ②-⑥ The team with more points wins
the game
• Adaptation: To make the game more challenging, whisper
more than one word at a time to the students
Whisper Word Race
• Materials: flashcards (one set/class), whiteboard
• Grouping: two teams
• Instructions:
① Write the target sounds on the whiteboard
② Have one student from each team stand near the
whiteboard
③ On the count of three, show them a flashcard with the
picture side facing the students and have them run to
the whiteboard
④ The first student to touch the correct sound gets a point
for their team
⑤ Repeat steps ②-④ The team with more points wins
the game
Touch a Sound
• Materials: paper, pencil
• Grouping: two teams
• Instructions:
① Say a target word and have students write down the target sound on the paper
② When they have written the target sound, students should hold up the paper above their heads to show they have finished
③ The student who raises their paper first and is correct gets a point for their team
④ Repeat steps ①-③ The team with more points wins the game
