Never Take Your Eye Off the Prize

If I were to give you one sound piece of advice as you embark on creating

(and expanding) your business online, it would be: Never take your eye off the prize And that prize is Sales.

Sales is the reason you got into business and is what clothes your kids, paysyour mortgage, and allows you those awesome vacations with friends andfamily If you didn’t get into business to make money, perhaps your business

is really just a hobby at this stage There is nothing wrong with hobbies, but abusiness is about making money

Your sales (and bank account) should also be a reflection of how you are

helping to shape the world— for the better I realize not all businesses careabout making the world a better place, but I wrote this book of sales

strategies for those kinds of entrepreneurs It’s part of my mission here at

Holistic Fashionista.

What I’m about to share with you in this book is a formula that every Internetmarketer should be using to generate more sales, reach more clients, andmake a greater impact on the planet at large And yes, this formula can beused to make it worse too, because it works for whatever it is you intend tosell

So if you have picked-up this book or downloaded it to use as a guide toshove gross solutions down the mainstream markets mouth, please stopreading this I have no interest in helping those who don’t have something to

sell that isn’t going to help others be healthier, happier, and more stylish.

If you haven’t noticed already, the Internet is saturated with all kinds of

scams and ploys And let’s be honest, great sales copy can (and will) generate

sales But I hope you will use this book to spread goodness into the ether andpay your lessons forward with integrity

If you have overcome a serious health condition or made millions selling arestaurant and you want to help others achieve what you have alreadyachieved for yourself… and you did it in a humane way, then I want nothingmore than for you to thrive

The Internet needs more authentic marketers and holistic solutions It doesn’t

Trang 7

matter if you sell real estate advice, know how to get babies to sleep throughthe night, or are a Chinese metaphysics expert who has a modern solution to

everyday problems, Funnel Foreplay can be used for nearly any type of

business

Funnel Foreplay has worked for:

Realtors

Chefs and Restaurateurs

New Age Experts

Holistic Practitioners

Wellness Professionals

Stylists and Image Consultants

Authors and Speakers

Business Coaches/Consultants

Designers and Artists

Accountants, Dentists, Chiropractors

Skincare Professionals

And nearly any product or service

Whatever industry you are in, creating a sales funnel with the secrets

presented in this book will set your business up for success— or better yet, itwill set your business apart from your competitors because it’s likely theyhave NOT heard of the steps and strategies presented in this book

If you have the drive to bring your message to the Internet, take hours out ofyour day to set up a functional and smart sales funnel, your business willnever be the same You will also never look at the Internet the same wayagain

You see, the Internet isn’t just for connecting with old friends on Facebook orsharing beautiful sunsets on Instagram; it’s not just to search Google forrecipes that will impress a gorgeous man on the third date or how to fix yourbicycle by watching videos on YouTube

The Internet is a powerful tool for growing any kind of business online It haslaunched millions of businesses and generated more sales for startups than

Trang 8

any other platform And the best part about the Internet is, it makes itpossible for the businesses that have little start-up capital to not only exist, but to profit If you can get a hang of the formula this book presents, you will

be one step closer to changing more lives in a significant way and playing inthe big leagues!

The World Wide Web isn’t just the largest mall in the world; it’s a holisticplatform for millions of prospects desperately searching for a product orservice that will help them solve their urgent problems

However, as grandiose and glorified as all this sounds… if you take your eye

off the prize, your sales, your business, and your products will not gain the

exposure they deserve I know this because I have consulted with hundreds ofsmall business owners and start-up brands for years, and while the idea of

‘making money while you sleep’ sounds like a slice of heaven, most people

do not have the technological skills nor the Internet marketing plan down toachieve their desired results In fact, for most business owners and start-ups,Internet marketing is just another bright shiny object they’re hoping to get thehang of “one of these days.”

If you are willing to roll up your sleeves, get a little techie, and follow thisformula through to completion, you will not only be richer, you will be ahead

of your competition tenfold But just like any good competitor, they willeventually catch on, and before you know it, they will stumble upon this book(because I’m a great Internet marketer) and will soon launch their own salesfunnel, too

Let’s get a move on it so you are always one step ahead of your competitors

and most importantly, so you never take your eye off the prize.

PART I FUNNEL FOREPLAY:

Dirty Little Secrets

Trang 10

The hardest part about creative expression is allowing yourself to use it! Thismight sound odd because creative expression is fun and ignites yourmotivation Creative expression forces you to look yourself dead in the eyeand believe it’s okay if you share that part of you in your brand and bevulnerable.

I think of business as an art, and regularly refer to my work with SignatureSystem: The Art of Business That’s because I don’t do business the old-fashioned way I’m not an old Hollywood socialite and I’m not a man

The kind of change I seek in the world is to shake up the norm and disrupt theold (and tired) rules of running a business, which usually states “beprofessional”, “be positive”, and “don’t burn any bridges.”

And while I am not going to totally disagree that those qualities shouldn’t bepresent, when it comes to modern-day personal branding, you need only to beyourself; the good, the bad, and the ugly

I think about women in history like Talitha Getty, a 1960s Dutch actress andsocialite who died of a heroin overdose; she was a style icon and will godown in history She dressed in boho clothing and was married to John PaulGetty But here’s the deal, no one is perfect and we don’t judge her for doingdrugs! We appreciate her for the beauty she brought into the world offashion We all have our problems and it’s okay to be who you are The oneswho love you will love you that much more if you get comfortable in yourown skin, and the ones that judge will sway with the times and blow away

Trang 11

like the wind.

And that’s where I am today Holistic Fashionista is taking a new turn intothe modern age of personal branding My mission is bigger than me and Iplan to represent the kind of change I wish to see in the world: living withoutchains and believing that my creative expression will be heard by those whowant to hear it— the rest can unsubscribe or move onto the next website.Holistic Fashionista isn’t a regular ‘holistic company.’ We care about peopleand we’re here to change the world for the better But that doesn’t mean wewon’t enjoy our life, occasionally down a shot of tequila, or give someone themiddle finger in traffic It also doesn’t mean we are always happy-go-luckyyogi’s 24-7 But we are aware that these behaviors don’t define WHO we are. They are just part of our story

Holistic Fashionista is a brand I built to describe the type of person I am andthe kind of person I like to work with A Holistic Fashionista is a gamechanger, a mover and shaker, an over-achiever, a style snob, and a lover ofgreen juice She loves her friends and the impact she can make on societybecause she is a natural born leader It might have taken her years to getcomfortable speaking her truth and believing in her art, but everyday shetakes a stand, even if it’s just a small one, to allow the world to see who she

is and let the haters hate In hate there is always a little bit of love, and in lovethere is an opportunity for change

That’s how I am feeling today More stuff later

Trang 12

When I started Holistic Fashionista, I was full of hope, excitement, inspiration, and dedication It was a motivation I had felt in the past, likethose days as a clothing designer at Sunday Driver I was like a little kidrunning through the candy aisle— high as a kite with an injection of glucoserunning through my veins What happened? Where did the giddy little childgo?

Perhaps the dose of insulin has hit my bloodstream and now things arebalancing out; the thrill of the chase lost, now that my business is in fulleffect Or maybe that burning desire to achieve my goal got satiated Is thehunger gone forever?

As I grace the cover of Holistic Fashionista magazine in celebration of our year anniversary, I just don’t feel like toasting; I feel like hiding I supposeover the course of 12 months I probably took on too much, launched toomany things, and changed my website a zillion times too many, but it wasthose very events that kept the thrill of the hunt exciting and mysterious

1-So now what? More of the same? I’m bored

As I head into my second year, I want something different I want to surprise

my audience and keep them on their toes I want to break-free from anythingand everything that has ever held me down in my life— I’m dying for shockvalue Part of me wants to shout from the top of my lungs “It’s my life! I’ll

do what I want with it! It’s my business, I’ll conduct it as I see fit And I’llchange my website and my mind as often as I please.”

If anything, my 1-year anniversary has me a bit bewildered that what I’ve

Trang 13

created doesn’t totally match what I set out to achieve I built something Ithought I wanted yesterday and I made a bunch of new friends along the way.How is that possible that I’ve worked with some of the most amazing women

as clients, made a great living doing it, and I still yearn for that deeperunderstanding of what success is really about I think I have the successblues

So here I sit, at Whole Foods sipping electrolyte water, having just downed athree-salad melody of steamed veggies and two flavors of chopped cabbageslaw, one purple, one light green Am I really that different than I was 12months ago? I’m still eating the same good ‘ole crap I’m still sitting heretyping on my computer talking shop, but why do I feel so different?

Part of me thinks I just don’t really know how to celebrate myaccomplishments Maybe the way I celebrate is to internalize and reflect onwhat it is I truly want Maybe I want to have a pity party instead of a noisyfestivity with organic margaritas Maybe everything I am teaching in mybusiness coaching is who I truly am, and I just need to continue to dig deeper

to find the hidden treasures that lay beneath the depths of my soul to continue

to expand my personal brand and inspire others to do the same Perhaps Ineed to stop judging myself for not doing things the way others want me to

do them, and accept the fact that Holistic Fashionista is who I strive to be, notwho I am now or will ever be And if someone has an opinion about how I

‘should’ be running my business, it’s okay if I just ignore it

When it comes down to it, perhaps success is a personal journey It’s not anaccomplishment or destination, or something you get a medal for todisplay on your trophy shelf Perhaps it’s a movement, a voyage into theunknown, a rite of passage that is sacred to your soul moving through thegrowing pains, sitting alone at Whole Foods and sipping electrolyte waterwhile asking yourself, “what is it that I truly want?”

Everyday I get closer to knowing exactly what that looks like; tomorrow is achance to visualize it happening, but today is a time to reflect and sit with mysuccess journey and figure out what the heck it is I want for the next 12months I’ll sit peacefully alone next to this salad bar and digest myaccomplishments— I might even go get a mint tea latté So maybe I don’tfeel like celebrating in the traditional manner I can tell at this moment thatthis just might be how I celebrate; internalizing and questioning what I want

Trang 14

while fantasizing about a mint tea latté And now I’ll go get that.

I don’t need a party I don’t need fan mail or hate mail to know I’msuccessful I also don’t need to pat myself on the back or reward myself withsome extravagant gift I suppose the real gift is sitting here in front of thiscomputer and choosing to share my truth I could give two sh*ts about fame

I could give two damns about opinionated bystanders I could care less aboutseeing my photo-shopped photo on the cover of a magazine What I careabout is getting to know myself better; and sometimes seeing yourself on thecover of a magazine helps you see yourself in a new perspective

That’s all I really wanted anyway— a new perspective to keep me motivated

to keep going even when my feathers get ruffled And then maybe tomorrowI’ll have that organic margarita with friends because I allowed myself tocelebrate in my own way today ME time is celebration time, and I can toast

to that

Trang 15

So that got me thinking One of the things a lot of people don’t talk aboutwhen it comes to running a business (at least if you plan to have a successfulone), is that it’s going to cost not only a monetary investment, but also a timeinvestment and a lot of it Balance is bull when it comes to beingsuccessful, and I’m not kidding— I have felt the pain of being a workaholic.

My butt totally hurts! I sit way too much!

I was letting new doors open and even decided to get my exercise routineback in order In fact, it took seven days away from home at my favoriteretreat destination of Jacuzzi time, shoe shopping, and eating like a queen(health food, of course) to see how bad I had let it get

What I learned is how ridiculously overworked I had become, and it wascosting me my sanity Before my vacation, most days I’d wake up and work

in my pajamas from 7am-11pm before I’d even take a shower I wouldn’texercise much, and sometimes I’d catch myself running to the shower when Iheard my husband pull in from a 10-hour day of work I haven’t had a sociallife for as long as I can remember and it was getting a little lonely I was out

Trang 16

make time to keep your sanity by getting your butt off the chair, yourbusiness is really nothing more than a façade I had my herbs, probiotics, green juices, and hot lemon water stocked to keep me healthy, but I couldn’tclear my mind In fact, I was exhausted

I decided after day 6 that it was time for some much needed leg lifts, weights, and crunches to get the ball rolling I wanted my sanity back I wanted thatdesire and hunger I once had for my business to have a rebirth so I could bethe type of leader my tribe needs: SOMEONE SANE

I’m happy to say that retail therapy WORKS, and so does 20 minutes a day

of exercising It absolutely rejuvenated me When I returned home from PalmSprings I was energized to EDIT I wanted to pair down and take the weightoff my shoulder, plus my wardrobe (and shoe collection) were out of control,

so I spent the evening color coordinating my closet, tossing over 10 pairs ofshoes and a bag full of clothes, which I happily donated to my 2 beautifulassistants (to make room for the 5 new pairs I scored 2 days before BlackFriday) and took a moment to visualize getting dressed in these amazingclothes I’d spent hours of my time searching for!

I felt like ME again I felt my sanity coming back to life I felt creative!

This morning I was so excited to get up and GET DRESSED what asurprise! I did my make-up, put on my cream crochet vintage Angel sleevewrap knit top and my high-waisted skinny jeans, and drank my hot lemonwater with a big ole goofy smile

While balance might be bull for success, vacations are mandatory forbalance Yin and Yang are happy again And so am I

Trang 17

CHAPTER 4

Is Being an Over-Achiever a Sickness or a Gift

Dear Diary,

Each morning when I wake, I lay there with my eyes closed, and in my mind,

I go through everything that needs to be done in my business Sometimes Ifeel overwhelmed because I think I’ll never get it all done, and sometimes Iget excited, like it’s my birthday and I cannot wait for the day to begin totackle the tasks and challenges that stand before me But today was different. This morning I just listened, and I listened closely to my thoughts Then Ibegan to worry

Instead of going over my long to-do list, I heard my self-talk What Iwitnessed was a girl in pain What I heard was suffering In Buddhism, TheFirst Noble Truth is about Dukkha Dukkha is a Sanskrit word meaningsuffering, but not in the classic sense of the word Since Dukkha is not totallytranslatable in English, a closer definition is, ‘life is in constant change.’ Itcan also mean stress, discomfort, unease, and dissatisfaction pretty close tothe life of an over-achiever As I went about my morning, Day #4 of my NewYear’s Cleanse, cutting up my favorite fruit, cantaloupe (gearing up to make

a delicious whip), I finally heard my cry and knew that Dukkha was in fulleffect

While I have been making a conscious effort to slow down (it’s one of myNew Year’s goals), I found myself in a personal massacre of people pleasing

My long to-do list had everyone else written all over it My desire to please

my staff, my clients, and my tribe of holistic leaders started to feel like asickness Banging my head against the wall trying to make sure all my i’swere dotted and my t’s were crossed (but even then, I miss a few), shook me

to the core I’d even find myself at times saying ‘yes’ when my gut wasyelling NO!

‘How many over-achievers does it take to screw in a light bulb’, I thought? And I suppose the answer is just 1 The over-achiever thinks she has to do

Trang 18

everything by herself because she knows it won’t get done the way she likes

it She has control issues; she has people-pleasing troubles, and she struggleswith negative thinking from time-to-time, but in the end who is it hurting?Being an over-achiever is a habit that I don’t think can be broken It’s as ifit’s an autoimmune disorder that you’ll have to care for your entire life, which took me back to the years when I struggled with psoriasis As an over-achiever with psoriasis I read every book, changed my diet dramatically, triedevery holistic measure under the sun, only to find the expectations of havingclear skin were unreasonable Life just didn’t feel free; it felt contrived andoverly strict, kind of like my illness with being an over-achiever

So here I sit, waiting for my tasty cantaloupe whip to finish vita-mixing, Ihear myself loud and clear— that over-achieving must be nurtured Whetheryou label it as OCD, ADD, bitchy, trivial, know-it-all, rigid, strict, mean, orwhatever you want to call it, that over-achiever in the corner who is makingsure it’s just perfect for you and everyone else to enjoy— perhaps it’s time torethink how you judge them and how I judge myself Just like a devastatedpatient who learns she has breast cancer, or the teenage girl who battles withdepression, aren’t we all plagued with a little sickness? Mine just happens to

be over-achieving

If Dukkha shows up, I know my heart and health need nurturing I know that

my worrying to do good for others comes from a very sincere place I knowthat in my heart, the pain might be deep, but the intention is always to dobetter, even if it shows up as anguish Today I make a conscious efforttowards nurturing my sickness, finding a healer to help me when times gettough, and to see the bright side in my efforts to do good in the world;because at the end of the day, that’s all the over-achiever really wantsanyway And that’s a healthy gift

Trang 19

my new home-office, I feel a sense of clarity around my accomplishments Iunderstand how I got here and how it wasn’t all my doing Even with myoffice still in a bit of disarray, my staff is strong, my head is clear, and mytribe… well, they are ridiculously cool I feel very fortunate.

While each day presents a new challenge that often feels like a winding flight

of stairs that typically leads to a door I’ve never opened before, today I’mstanding on top of the staircase with 5 pieces of golden advice

RESOURCES ARE GOLD

Firstly, you absolutely must have a team or a phone-call-away roster ofphenomenal resources, aka PEOPLE that get you Without the talent tosupport you on your journey, you’re really left with a bunch of ambitions thatmay or may not come to fruition The stronger the team, the stronger yourproducts, programs, and services will be, and in turn, the more lives you willtouch It’s finding these people that is the real challenge I now understandwhy interior designers hoard their resources, because it took them years oftrial and error to find talented people who can help execute their vision.Resources are like BLING They are gold Treat them as so

HUMILITY IS ATTRACTIVE

Secondly, being humble in your business keeps you open-minded I cannottell you how many times I ask my interns, assistants, and random (smart)people their opinion on something, even something as small as ‘do you likethat line there’ The details are important, but in the end, you must make thefinal decision, even when it feels impossible That is why joining amastermind group or having a small group of friends who share similar goals

Trang 20

is priceless I cannot tell you how valuable being humble can be for yourbusiness, and more importantly, finding those special people who you trust toshare that humility with.

YOUR WORK IS ART

Thirdly, every day I get closer to understanding my business through the lens

of an Artist An artist goes their own way without worrying about what othersthink, say, or do An artist allows herself to be vulnerable, thinks for herself, and decides what’s best for her I feel that being an artist is one of the highestforms of creativity, for it is our art that celebrates our individuality, inspiresothers to be themselves, and ultimately, creates a planet filled with new ideasand more love When we accept that we are all different, that acceptancebecomes a powerful force for change I’ve dedicated my life to being aChange Agent for Individuality

Over the past 13 months in business I have worked diligently to build anincredible team, tribe, and work of art I trust my instincts I listen to myinner voice I fine-tune my craft obsessively On a daily basis, I take action tomeet like-minded people who are passionate about their work! I choose tosurround myself with smart people who see beneath the phony bullshit ofthose so-called-leaders who belittle + condescend others just to grow theirbank accounts Those very special people who are here to make a seriousdifference in the world through their art, who feel deeply, and who strive tokeep a smile on their face because seeing the beauty is far grander, are people

I admire I refer to these individuals as Change Agents In fact, I’ve built atribe of Change Agents How cool is that?!

STOP BEING PUSHY

This exclusive group of individuals reminds me that being a Change Agent ishard work because it involves a heavy dose of humility I often wonder ifhumility has gone out of style or something? Every time I stumble upon aFacebook ad or magically end up on someone’s mailing list, for whom Inever subscribed, everybody seems to be preaching about how they have allthe answers to your problems, as if they have the magic pill or something Icall BS on that They aren’t Change Agents; those people are pushysalesmen

PRACTICE BEING A LEADER

Trang 21

Being a good leader has become a very important role to me I know I canimprove I know I can be a better example of the change I wish to see in theworld I will continue to do the self-development work to be a better leader,

to be more patient, to take deeper breaths, and remember that I am an Artist.Even if I don’t paint, draw, or sing on stage, I have an art that is being crafteddaily; it’s bringing me closer to my truth, which in turn is bringing me moresuccess than I ever imagined, even though success is a feeling I haven’tmastered

I wonder if my inability to feel successful is a characteristic of a ChangeAgent Is that why the Change Agents I’ve met and loved are so humble?Perhaps being a Change Agent isn’t about feeling, or even being successful;maybe it’s truly about changing the world and showing others how importanttheir role is on the planet, no matter how we choose to label them What I doknow for sure is I cannot change the world alone I need a team, a tribe, and adose of humility to continue to be the leader of change I wish to see in theworld And that takes practice

Trang 22

What is the perfect balance of give and take? How can I be assured that mygiving is going to be well received and appreciated, at the very least? It seemslike the more apparent the problem becomes, the more I want to see the trend

in this freeloading frenzy Who are these people?

Maybe it’s the marketing dork in me, but I like to analyze, optimize, and findtrends in things What I have noticed is that freeloaders aren’t evil I havetaken a good hard look at who these people are outside of their businesspursuits, and have discovered they are truly extraordinary people looking to

do great things in this world At least that’s what it looks like from theoutside They work hard to bring their message to light by marketingthemselves in rather unattractive ways (in my opinion), but mostly, they havedifficulty seeing how they are standing in their own way by bugging otherswith their problems too frequently

But just as there is a yin to every yang, there is also a dark side of thefreeloader Many of the freeloaders I have had the not-so-pleasure of meetingand working with are rather self-indulgent— as if they are the only oneworking their tail off to bring their magic to commerce They preach theirwisdom, practice holistic living, and overcompensate to prove that they are

an expert in their field (even go as far as to embellish about how successfulthey really are or are NOT), but I have to wonder sometimes… is it all a bigfacade?

Just as I know how my sister ticks (because we have the same blood running

Trang 23

through our veins), I know that women entrepreneurs are wired a certain way,and when you understand ‘your kind’, you see through the bullshit Many ofthese entrepreneurs are lying between their teeth, acting like they are moresuccessful than they are, or pretending to be sensitive while simultaneouslyplotting some evil email or passive aggressive scheme to let you know youcrossed them Big whoop.

What I FAIL to feel in this freeloading baloney is sorry I don’t feel sorry foryou! I know no one works harder than me; I put in 16+ hours a day building

my business and sacrificing downtime in order to build a company that I amproud of, so one day I will be able to purchase my dream home and travelwithout a budget It might not be their dream, but it sure is mine and I plan tomake that dream come true with good ole fashioned HARD WORK, notgriping about how someone didn’t promote me enough

I wasn’t brought up expecting things to be handed to me In fact, it was thecold harsh chill of life that gave me my work ethic and the ‘I can do it alone’mentality that has me typing away working on my business to the wee hours, because I know business is NO easy task In fact, I often tell my friends that

if they truly don’t want to have their own business, by all means DON’T! It’snot going to be handed to you on a silver platter just because you redid yourwebsite and it still looks like crap

Freeloaders fail to realize that nothing will be handed to them, especiallywhen you EXPECT something SHOULD be done for you… No matter howspecial you think you are, how beautiful you think you are (the pretty girlsyndrome), or how you’ve spent most of your life getting everything youwanted because daddy made sure of it, I promise you, you WILL have towork for it, pay for it, and give thanks to those who were kind enough toinvest in your vision

Bottom line is… freeloaders might not be evil, but they are annoying AndI’ll put myself in check right now because bitchy entrepreneurs are annoyingtoo Tomorrow I’ll try to be less of the latter

Trang 24

me of high school and all the cattiness between the ladies But I’m trying tosee the bright side, and how it will inspire my speech at the Digital MarketingBusiness conference I’ll be giving in front of 1000 people (to say the least, this is way out of my comfort zone) this May High school was full of cattybitches & with evil stares, and I’m finding that being in a circle of smartentrepreneurs is tainted with the occasional evil eye as well.

I remember just 18 months ago wishing my business would move faster, make money quicker, and just hurry-the-fuck-up I was incredibly impatient

I worked day and night and cried all the time I was a wreck, but I kepttrotting along anyway Today, I discovered why rapid growth is not really anideal situation AT ALL In fact, it’s kinda the pits However, I’m challengingmyself to see the bright side

The growing pains have now morphed into valuable life lessons in businessetiquette (if that even exists) and the self-discovery expedition I am on as awoman entrepreneur; how at times it brings out the mean girl side in some, just like those catty little girls in high school I wanted to RUN with theMisfits in high school, get away from the chaos of being a ‘pretty girl’ or the

‘popular girl’, for which I was always misjudged After all, I wasn’t themajority; I was the only brunette in the popular crowd and I stood out like a

Trang 25

sore thumb I also had a bitchy side, which I used regularly to protect mynerdy guy friends and to steer the catty bitches FAR, FAR away from me Imight have made a few enemies while I was at it, but at least I was clear—Don’t mess with me, or my friends.

What I failed to realize as my journey to success flourished was that I wasbeing guided, even as far back as high school Every wrong turn I made lead

me to another open door, which I voluntarily walked into I cried along theway and I hid my hurt feelings well I was determined to find what I waslooking for

The hardships were, and still are, there to prep me for what’s to come As Iwrite this speech for the convention in Raleigh this May, I’m doing a lot ofreflecting, soul searching, and internal dialoguing to prepare me for that evenbigger audience Just as those mean girls in high school were prepping me forthe catty women entrepreneurs who would cross my path last year (and I’msure the many years to come); I have continued to embrace my inner misfit, stand up for myself, and delete those who are unkind to me Success is aboutmaking room for bigger and better things, just like clearing the clutter in yourhome might bring you a killer relationship; the Feng Shui of rapid growth isalways constant

No matter the tears I cried, the times I was burned, the followers/fans Igained, and the money I made, new problems were always presented Theonly difference is now I know it is all part of a master plan As tough as it’sbeen, the new friends I have made and the clients that continue to teach MEwhile I coach them has been surreal They SHOW me my worth They SEEthings in me that I don’t see They are prime examples of the superpowers theUniverse possesses

In a few months I will attend my 20-year high school reunion, and you knowwhat? I hope the mean girls stay home It’s onward and upward from here. The more lives I touch and the more value I bring to the world, the moresettled I feel in this flux that is Rapid Growth

—Los Angeles I began analyzing what Los Angeles truly represents, whensomething fascinating dawned on me.

Over the course of 18 months in business, Holistic Fashionista has takensome twists and turns, and throughout it all, it continues to strengthen anddeepen, like the ocean’s strong current; it might beat you up and tear up thesoles of your feet on reef beneath you, but you take the beating anyway— thebenefits are far too rich and healing

In a city where rules don’t apply and weirdness is totally accepted, perhapseven praised, a big light bulb in my head shined so bright I decided to let mymind wander into the depths that is Lala-Land What is this place called LosAngeles, and what does it have to do with Holistic Fashionista? It was aquestion I needed answered

The first, and most obvious is, I live in Los Angeles; it is where HolisticFashionista was born I came to Los Angeles for the sunshine and to pursue adream— but it spit on me and taught me some valuable lessons; lessons I amforever grateful for But like the ocean’s strong current and waves that ripyour bathing suit top off leaving you exposed, it just kept giving back andpromising me more than meets the eye

What started out as a window of opportunity and an open door to pursue mywildest passions, has became a staircase that I keep climbing, just like the dirtpath that lead me to the Greek in Griffith Park where I was greeted by acommunity of creative souls who also had the balls to jump in their car, get

Trang 27

their butts on a plane, and go after their dreams in this crazy city called LosAngeles.

But dream pursuing doesn’t come without its bruises; it also doesn’t comewithout important lessons in life and business With approximately 4 millionpeople wandering the streets of the Los Angeles, there sure are a lot ofdreams floating around in the atmosphere (and huge communities of peoplewho understand what you’re going through) Even if some are just in thepreliminary stages of REM, daydreaming counts in my book Aspiring foranything always starts with a vision and a dream

One of Holistic Fashionista’s greatest accomplishments is the people in ourcommunity These over-achievers with dreams so big they’ll have to grow in

to work incredibly hard to bring their vision to fruition, and that’s amandatory ingredient for true success You need to surround yourself withothers who get you, who cheer you on, who help pick you up when the roseswelt and the dream appears to be anything but a joyride at Barcade—same istrue of Los Angeles

The more Los Angeles became a friend, the more the layers of its soul wererevealed, and what I discovered threw me for a loop; but I’m down to makenew friends and go on coffee dates with virtual Facebook friends Aftermoving from the dreary and cold San Francisco where my body wasdesperately craving an overdose of vitamin D, Los Angeles was a place thattaught me about health Your days are so fast here (or slow depending on thegrueling traffic) that if you forget about your health, panic and anxiety attackswill surface; if you’re unlucky you’ll get a whole bunch of health issues all atonce I know, because it happened to me, and you’re bound to get a littlegranola

New Yorkers might despise our organic-decaf-cappuccino- hemp-milk-with-xylitol-as-a-sugar-substitute behaviors, but what they mightfail to understand is we HAVE to be this way Whether we are talking aboutour spiritual awakenings, gorging ourselves in overpriced vegan cuisine atReal Food Daily, or attending yoga in Silverlake looking babelicious-as-hellfar too frequently, what we are really trying to do is feed our soul thenourishment it needs to keep going! Do you even understand the kind ofperson it takes to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and die trying to fulfillyour creative endeavors!? A strong person Correction; a fucking ridiculously

Trang 28

dolloped-in-strong person.

And with a whopping 4 million entrepreneurial people trying to get theirdreams to make them a buck or two, there’s bound to be rejection, bankruptcy, credit card debt, failed relationships, and countless odd jobs inyour future Without eating healthy and taking good care of yourself, negativity is sure to set in, and that’s no highway to success; I don’t care howhard you work!

So how is Los Angeles any different than a creative entrepreneur? It isn’t Let me break it down.

1) Los Angeles is a creative population of artists, actors, models,

designers, writers, entrepreneurs, and a multitude of individuals who came here with a dream.

And they work hard to make their dreams come true

2) Los Angeles will spit you out if you give up on your dream!

She’ll make sure to punish you and discipline you when you get the nuttyidea that moving back to your hometown is even remotely a good idea Whenthe going gets tough, Los Angeles will make it harder for you—she wants tosee how dedicated you really are!

3) Los Angeles is a talented community of people struggling to get by,

gently infused with those who finally got their big break.

You have friends who have made it and those who are still trying to makeshit happen Segregation is foolish and blocks creativity We embrace allwalks of life

4) Los Angeles is a melting pot of Gucci handbags mixed with people

who don’t give a shit!

If you want to hit Whole Foods in your pajamas without makeup and bigsunnies to hide the bags under your eyes from a night of crying because youfell in love with a narcissist, so be it We won’t judge you Plus, you looknormal compared to the homeless-looking guy who’s driving a beamer

5) Los Angeles isn’t like any other city in the world, and you know

what? It isn’t trying to be the next New York, Paris, London, or any other hippified city in the world.

Trang 29

If Los Angeles were a person, she would be an individual She’d do as shepleases, wear what she wants, and live in her own little universe of creativity.Even if that means she lives in a 400 square foot studio in trendy Los Felizthat nearly burned down in flames at least she’s got rent control Whethershe’s looking to find herself, investors for her business, or a die-hard tribe ofkismet clients that were born to buy what she was born to create, Los Angeles

is a chick who is going to do it her way— and she’ll give you the birdie ifyou disrupt her “I am Grateful” affirmations over that Macrobiotic bowl withsea vegetables at Cafe Gratitude; even if she thinks it’s cheesy too, at least itgot her thinking about the infinite possibilities

Los Angeles isn’t just a place, it’s a lifestyle, and you don’t need to movehere to reap its insane lessons in entrepreneurship or cozy up with a dose ofwheatgrass to cleanse your blood What you can learn from Los Angeles ishow to introduce the principles and this way of life into your business so youcan start playing by your own rules Here at Holistic Fashionista, we arededicated to helping you embrace your weirdness, celebrate yourindividuality, showcase your work, get involved with communities ofbusiness trendsetters who understand the entrepreneur’s journey, feelsupported all the way to the top (whatever that may look like for you), anduse the characteristics of Los Angeles as our muse to inspire your creativity. After all, when push comes to shove, you’ll see who’s left standing It won’t

be the copycats, it won’t be those who were deterred by the crashing waves,

it will be the ones who believed in the beauty of their dreams, took the time

to care for their mind, body, and spirit, and those who jumped off the cliffand took the risk! Los Angeles is different and that’s what makes her so cool;she’s a heroine in her own right and she’s not going anywhere but up

Trang 30

Running a business, being in the social media eye, and speaking on stage hastaught me about what I truly want and what I definitely don’t have time foranymore It’s time to close some doors and begin creating a future that makes

my heart sing

My Signature System™ coaching program makes my heart sing, but a fewmonths ago I felt like something was missing, like a piece of my soul wasn’tshining through because I started feeling let down I had become overlyinvested in my clients business’—so much so that I really just wanted to doeverything for them: design their website, build their sales funnels, do theiradvertising for them—shit, if I could have been them I would have startedtaking on clients for them too! To say the least, it was completely nuts

Until one day, I felt sad Drained Punched in the face too many times Andthen it dawned on me: many people who start a business aren’t necessarilyover-achievers Many of them give up on their business or move onto thenext bright shiny object and some of them were never entrepreneurs to beginwith! Call me stupid, but I had no idea!

I thought everyone who started a business wanted to live, breathe, andnurture their baby I thought everyone would do whatever it took to make his

or her business work Turns out that isn’t the case at all, and that was a hugeeye-opener

So today the time has come to distance myself from individuals who give up

on their business or move on to the next bright shiny object, so I can let go ofthe heartbreak (and exhaustion) These are not the people I was born to serve

Trang 31

I’m here to serve the over-achiever; those rare individuals, who will dietrying, never give up, and keep the faith even when the going gets tough Andtrust me, it will get tough! You have to be an optimist to be an entrepreneur;there’s just no way around it Otherwise, simply put, you’re not anentrepreneur—you were merely someone hoping it would be easy so youcould make a few dollars You’re not my Kismet Client® and you neverwere I just didn’t know that until now.

Having launched The Holistic Fashionista Academy just a few months ago,

I’ve found this business model comes with a very different kind of coachingexperience The Academy is an educational learning center for self-starterswho are ready to create, market, and grow a Philanthropic Brand Mystudents still gain access to me and develop their Signature System™, butthere was one piece of the puzzle that was missing from my one-on-onecoaching program that the Academy satisfied in a huge way and attracted acompletely different customer To say the least, it was shocking just howresponsive this lateral move ended up being, and it all started by fullyembracing my nerdy side—the part of me that wears big black-rimmedglasses and busts out a couple lines of html code practically daily

Turns out that very part of me wasn’t the forerunner in my branding How did

I miss that? Seeing that I was busting out a sales funnel every week… was Iscared being a tech-geek would repel my fellow Holistic Fashionista?Because I would have been dead wrong!

Don’t get me wrong, I pride myself in being a techy, backend kinda gal, and Iknow developers already know the anguish that lives behind the code; it can

be painfully frustrating and time consuming! One semicolon out of place andthe whole thing doesn’t function properly Talk about pulling out your hair—but I’ll take dealing with software and hardware problems over dealing withpeople who just want to be fed with a silver spoon Roll up your sleeves andget to work already, the clock is ticking!

As I untangled some of the bugs in my new membership site inside The

Holistic Fashionista Academy, the correspondence inside the private

community were blowing my mind Not only was this new group of womenwilling to roll up their sleeves and get their hands a little dirty, they wereloving every minute of it! And the best part, they are all self-starters Sure, they each require some personalized attention to get their questions answered

Trang 32

and to assure their Signature System™ and business foundation is solidbefore moving forward, but they take their business seriously They’recommitted to the process and that has made all the difference.

Each day as The Academy enrolls new students, it’s becoming abundantlyclear that a Signature System™ is an absolutely mandatory ingredient foryour business, but like any system, it needs to be updated from time to time

In this instance, it was my Signature System™ that needing updating: a newmarket and a new platform to deliver it

Whether you’re an extrovert craving the stage or an introvert salivating incode, you can’t escape the fact that business involves people, relationship-building, customer care, and working out the bugs And just because you’rebehind-the-scenes personality who hides behind the screen, doesn’t mean youcan hide out from people People are what make businesses work; it’s justmaking sure you are working with the right people to ensure your businesssuccess: this includes attracting the right customers to your business too

So I feel a bit sad this morning as I commit to closing the door on a marketthat isn’t a right fit for me and embrace the market I was born to serve (theover-achiever!), my business has evolved because I have evolved It feelsricher, fuller, deeper, nerdier and more exciting than ever!

With a new platform to deliver my new and improved Signature System™ toover-achievers, I’ve not only found a way to scale my business, I discoveredhow to deliver my product in a way that makes sense for a self-starter—thetrue entrepreneur

What I do know now is that with every door that closes, a new door willopen, and it just might be the door you were looking for all those years Youonly need to close one for it to appear Perhaps that is what business is—aseries of doors It’s up to you to decide which door you’ll decide to open Myonly advice is that when you do decide to walk through it, you commit

Let’s be honest… If you’re an achiever like me, you’ll always deliver; we can’t help ourselves Just be sure that the receiving end issomeone who will value all you bring to the table and cherish the workyou’ve been perfecting for years, for even a deep-tissue massage won’t healall the residual black dust that’s collected from those who simply weren’t theright market or right partners for you

Trang 33

over-It’s 6:13 am and by all means, I don’t have all the answers But what I doknow for sure is that the Universe has your back Every day we are givenlittle signs and new doors, yet it’s up to us if we’re ready to receive theinformation or walk through the door It’s always there waiting for us to cluein.

Business is a therapy session It will take you on an exploration of self, bringyou to your knees, make you cry, break-up with you and then want to getback together; it will throw you a curve ball and then you’ll hit a home run,but it’s always in session It’s a living, breathing organism that needs specialcare and when you finally give it a hug, it gives you a hug right back Thosehugs are clarity Clarity as to whom you’re really here to serve, what you’rereally in the business of selling, why you got into this crazy ride in the firstplace, and what door you will close next so a new door can open It’s aholistic process and if you’re willing to hang on for the ride, it will take you

on an adventure that will bring you to tears— tears of joy

PART II FUNNEL FOREPLAY:

The Formula

Trang 35

CHAPTER 10

The Power of Keywords

Most entrepreneurs have no idea how to pick their keywords, and if youhappen to be one of them, we’ll fix that problem right now

Keywords are everything when it comes to what I refer to as SearchboxMarketing (better known as search engine marketing or SEM) When

someone types into a search box, “how to fix a flat tire” what that person isreally doing is typing a long-tail keyword, pressing return, and hoping thatsomeone on the Internet has a solution to their specific problem

A long-tail keyword is a phrase usually ranging from 3-7 words in length

A short-tail keyword is a shorter phrase or keyword usually 1-2 words inlength

So, what do you need to know about keywords? First, you need to know the

difference and the importance of both types of keywords (and when to use

them) when building out your sales funnel.

A long-tail keyword is used to get traffic to your website or sales funnel It is

a SEO-rich phrase that is used in headlines, sales copy, naming jpegs, creating Pinterest boards, videos, podcasts, articles, and so much more tobring more viewers to your business

A short-tail keyword is most commonly used for advertising purposes When

you put together an advertising campaign, you and your competitors bid on

these short tail keywords to drive traffic to websites and sales funnels (We

will be diving into this deeper in Chapter 13 when we discuss paid marketing).

For now, let’s focus on choosing a long-tail keyword so you can buy a

domain name for your first sales funnel Let me remind you: a sales funnel is

different than your website Let me clarify the difference between the two:

A website is a branded tool used to generate leads to your business, show offyour credibility, create likeability, and, if you’re lucky, to build your list; butwith all due respect, no one cares about you until they know you, like you,

Trang 36

and trust you.

Your website is there to show your prospects you aren’t a scammer or a by-night product that is just there to take their money That’s why mostwebsites contain testimonials, surety symbols, and case studies You’re trying

fly-to prove fly-to your prospects that you are great at what you do and that yourproducts work But, without a proper sales funnel, your website won’t be

enough to create passive income streams, weed out the clients you don’t want

to work with, and furthermore, it will attract a lot of tirekickers

What makes Internet marketing so special is you actually have a way toautomate the sales process to such a degree that the right customers andclients find you and you no longer have to spend countless hours onconsultations or strategy sessions

That’s usually the reason you won’t see your digital or physical products

flying off the shelves on your branded website, because a winning sales

funnel has most likely not yet been achieved

If you have an e-commerce shop, you’ll need a lot more than professionalphotography of your products and a couple share buttons to sell thousands of

units each day (I’ll show you how to fix that in this book) That happens with

a strategic and well thought-out marketing plan Ultimately, a brandedwebsite is there to create credibility and to build brand awareness It’simportant for the longevity of your business

In addition, your website generally has some sort of blog associated with it,and I highly recommend you start using that blog with your long-tailkeywords so the search engines can bring new prospects to your website Butdon’t worry, I don’t believe “Content is King”, nor do I believe you should

be blogging ‘til the cows come home With Funnel Foreplay, “Content with a Strategy is Queen” The best part about the Funnel Foreplay strategy is, you

don’t need to publish new content every day or even weekly for that matter;generating strategic content is all part of a bigger master plan

A blog, podcast, or YouTube channel is great for building SEO (search

engine optimization) into your website using your long-tail keywords If you

ever need to do an advertising campaign or build a sales funnel, you’ll learn

how to target short-tail keywords at The Holistic Fashionista Agency for a fraction of what the CPC are going for in other advertising platforms (more

on this in Chapter 13) The reason I emphasize using long-tail keywords to

Trang 37

build SEO and to drive targeted traffic to your sites is because they are easier

to rank for in the search results

Once you have clarified your long-tail keywords, it’s time to put them towork!

Here’s an example: Imagine writing a blog post or article using your

long-tail keywords on how to fix a flat tire Your blog post title would look

something like this:

‘How to Fix a Flat Tire in 3 Easy Steps’

Say you own a bicycle shop in Brooklyn, NY and you’re looking to build out

an e-commerce shop to teach bicyclists how to safely ride in cities and to sellbicycle t-shirts and accessories to make riding even more awesome Writing

an article (or generating content whether it’s a YouTube Video or Podcast)

would be a powerful sales strategy for a couple reasons:

A) It positions you as a leader in your niche

B) It drives free targeted traffic to your website, which ultimately bring inprospects into your sales funnel or browsers to your clothing shop

A sales funnel is a separate domain from your branded website Your website

is the main hub where you build credibility and the know, like, and trust

factors around you and your brand; whereas a sales funnels main job is to qualify a prospect as either a buyer or a browser.

Once your prospect determines you (or your business) are the real deal, naturally they’ll want to dive deeper and click around After all, they haveproblems they want solved and lucky for them, you have the solution Win-win This is where the sales funnel comes in

Before you can build out a sales funnel to convert a prospect into a payingclient, you’ll first need to choose a specific domain name comprised of along-tail keyword Then you’ll need to purchase that domain name through aweb domain provider, such as Godaddy or Bluehost

But here’s where it gets tricky You want to make sure your long-tail

keyword isn’t overly competitive Why?

As I mentioned, you want to build search engine optimization into your salesfunnel sites Keyword-rich domain names have incredible SEO power!

Most entrepreneurs get discouraged when they hop on over to Godaddy.comand their desired domain name is already taken, but I’m going to fix that

Trang 38

problem right now The domain names that are taken are usually short-tail

keywords, and what you really want are long-tail keyword for your domain

names Long-tail keywords are less competitive to rank for, easy to spell, andmost importantly, they have SEO power!

Your job is to choose a long-tail keyword, for your domain name to use inyour sales funnel, wisely This way, it’s easier to get your sales funnel found

on the first page search results

For instance:

You might have a branded website (your credibility site) called

EvansBicycleCompany.com Great Now let’s build off that by creating a

sales funnel site that drives traffic (paid and free) by choosing a

complementary domain name that solves a specific problem for the bicyclist

(as you can imagine, you can create an infinite of sales funnels just by

thinking of all the problems Mr Fixed Gear Bicycle dude has!) Let’s serve

his every need and generate more sales This way everyone wins

Keyword-Rich Domain Name Examples:

The way we accomplish this is to offer something for a free or smallinvestment that they can use and/or purchase immediately

This will do 2 things:

1) It will build your mailing list of cold leads that are interested in what yourbusiness offers

2) It will tell us who is a buyer from that list of cold leads

Side Note: A cold lead is a prospect that has not spent money with your

business, but has given you their email address

I will be getting into more details in Chapter 6 to show you how you can tellwho is a buyer and who is just there for a quick fix (AKA: your free bribe.)

Trang 39

The first step in creating a successful sales funnel is figuring out what yourideal customer is searching for in the search engine.

How to _

Where to

What is _

Then, grab that long-tail keyword and add the phrase: allintitle: (in front of it

in the search box) It should look like this:

allintitle: how to ride a fixed gear bike

This allintitle tag is going to show you how competitive the long-tail

keywords are Allintitle just means there are that many ‘search results’ using

that phrase in the title tag Think of a title tag as the name of your article,

YouTube video, or podcast It could also be the headline (H1, H2, H3) inyour sales copy on a sales page

Because search engines are crawling the web with it’s robots and spiderslooking for the most relevant search results to bring their searchers, with theallintitle tag we can see how many competing content creators there are using

that title tag (or long-tail keyword phrase) to drive traffic to their website.

When searching for the right long-tail keyword, it’s important to take a look

at the results The allintitle tag + your long-tail keyword should generatearound 500-5000 results I say this loosely because anything under 500results probably means it’s not a keyword phrase that gets a ton of activityand anything over 5000 most likely means you will have a hard time getting

to the top of the search results (AKA: the first page.)

Side Note: You can also try using the Google Adwords Keyword Tool This

is a little more advanced, and I will be talking about this keyword search toolmore in depth in Chapter 4, but feel free to open a Gmail account now so youcan access the tool within Google Adwords®

Now, I realize this is the Internet and the search engines can change theiralgorithms anytime they please So, take this tip loosely and do your best tofind a long-tail keyword phrase that gets searched enough, isn’t overlycompetitive, and is available to purchase as a domain name on Godaddy orBluehost If you stay within these perimeters, you will be good to go

Buying the domain name is the first step to creating a desirable free bribe.Once you have figured out what domain name to purchase, you are now

Trang 40

ready start building your sales funnel.

Your free bribe offer should literally be the name of your long-tail keyword.Let’s put this into perspective: if you had a problem, hopped onto Google tofind a solution, clicked on one of the results on the first page, and there was

an awesome free tool to help you solve the problem, wouldn’t you say that’s

a pretty good strategy to building your mailing list? For free, mind you

For example:

If I wanted to learn how to buy my first fixed gear bike and I landed on yourwebsite or sales funnel that talked about how awesome fixed gear bikes are,

why you need one, etc… and then told me to: Click here to learn more about

what you need to know before you buy your first fixed gear bike, it’s a goodchance I’ll be opting in to whatever you tell me to do next

What easier way to start the sales process than to have a free bribe they canreceive right away to start fixing their problem immediately, which was theexact words they search for on Google!

Once you know what your ideal client is searching for on Google and you’vepurchased the long-tail keyword on Godaddy.com, it’s now time to create afree bribe to build your mailing list of cold leads

What clever free bribe could you offer your prospect that will entice him/her

to enter their first name and email address? Make a list and then find out ifthe domain names are available

Here is an example:

Free Report: How to Buy a Fixed Gear Bike

3 Things You Need to Know Before You Buy Your First Fixed Gear Bike

Domain name to purchase:

www.HowtoBuyaFixedGearBike.com

I can bet 90% of the time your prospects will give you their first name andemail after seeing your free bribe offer Why? Because the button told themthat is exactly what you promised If you start testing this and find that yourfree bribe isn’t building your mailing list, take a step back

Remember, this is Funnel Foreplay, and wherever there is hesitation there is

simply an opportunity to build the relationship further Instead of asking for afirst name and email, try asking a question
