Unit 12: THE ASIAN GAMES

C- Listening

I OBJECTIVE

By the ends of the lesson, students will be able to:

- Develop such listening micro-skills as listening for specific and detailed information

- Use the acquired language and knowledge to talk about sports and sportsmen

II PREPARATION

- Teacher: Handouts, textbook, cassette tapes

- Student: Textbook, notebook,…

III ANTICIPATED PROPBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS

- Ss may not have enough information to complete it, so T should be ready to assist them

IV PROCEDURE

Teacher and Students’ activities Board display

I.Warm up (7’)

II.Before you listen(10’)

-T introduces the topic and gets to study

the pictures on p 141

- T writes these questions on the board

and asks Ss to work in pairs to find the

answers

- T elicits answers from the class

- If Ss do not know the answer to

question1,T gives them the correct

answer

- If Ss do not know the answer to

question 2, that is fine

-T does not need to provide one but tells

Ss they will know the answer after they

listen to the tape

Pre- teach vocabulary

-T gets Ss to look at the new words on

page 141: gymnasium, gymnast, bar,

land, freestyle,…

*Question:

- Can you name the sport in each picture?

- Do you know who won the gold medal in these spots in the recent Asian Games?

* Answer:

- Swimming

- High jump

- Long jump

- Gymnastics

- T elicits the meanings of these words

from Ss

- T plays the tape once for Ss to listen to

how these words are said and then repeat

after the tape

- T gets some Ss to read the words again

and makes sure that they pronounce the

words correctly

III While you listen(15’)

Introduction: You are going to hear a

TV report of the Asian Games and do

the tasks after that.

Task1(8’)

- T gets Ss to rad the question through

and identify key words in each

question

- Ss identify the key words in each

option and the differences between

them

- T explains new words if any

- For the number, T gets Ss to read them

aloud

- This is remind to them how the

numbers are pronounced so that they

can catch the correct numbers later on

- T gets Ss to guess the answer to each

question and then tells them they need

to listen attentively to check if their

guesses are confirmed

- T plays the tape once for Ss to listen

and do task

- Then T gets Ss to find a partner to

check their answers with

- T checks the answers with the whole

class

- If many Ss cannot answer the

question T plays the tape one or two

*Answer:

1.C 2.A 3.A 4.B 5.D

more times and pauses at the answers

for them to catch

Task2(7’)

- T checks if Ss can answer the question

in task 2 without listening again

- If they cannot, T plays the tape for

them to listen again but before doing

this T should encourages Ss to read

through all the question, identify the

information they need to look for in

each question and if possible, predict the

answers

- T plays the tape again for Ss to listen

and answer the questions

- T gets Ss to check their answer with a

partner

- T checks with the whole class

- T should play the tape again and pause

at difficult points if many Ss cannot

complete the task

IV After you listen(10’)

-T puts Ss into groups of 3-4 and

explain the task: in their groups Ss are

going to prepare a talk about a famous

Vietnamese athlete

- Ss will come to front and tell the class

about this athlete But they should not

tell the athlete’s name and let the class

guess who this person is

-T gives Ss some prompt questions to

guide them in preparing their talk

-T goes around to help and check

-After 6-7 minutes T calls on the

representative of each group to come

front and present

-The class should listen attentively and

guess the name of the athlete.

-Ss are allowed to ask the presenter up

to 3 yes–no question if they cannot immediately tell who the athlete is -If no one has the correct answer, the group wins

V Wrap up (3’)

* Summarises:

- T summarises the main point of the lesson

* Home work:

- Ss write a paragraph about Vietnam’s performance and achievements in recent Asian Games

- Prepare for the next lesson
