PART A: INTRODUCTION

I Reasons for choosing the research:

Nowadays the trend of International Integration in many fields that includes Education system has taken English to a very important position English is a communication tool and also the key treasure to humanity On the other hand, the extensive application of information technology has made the English language learners become urgent and indispensable Learning and using English required a process of creative exercise diligence from both the learner and the instructor Through the practicing in my school, I found that most students like learning foreign language when starting, but gradually bored Most of them are very bad at listening It's hard for them to understand the internal hearing what a text or dialogue is about After each lesson, most students pay knowledge to their teacher

Under these circumstances that student have been studying English language in secondary school for 4 years, I have worked as a English teachers of Grade 10 and Grade12, I myself really concern how students can master, listen and manipulate mature information During teaching process in school and observe how students learn, I realized that the practice listening skills of the students have a lot of problems Most of students

do not know how to learn listening skill, learn students often find the most difficult in listening

In fact to have been listening skills in English, the school must have the listening exercise routine lasting forms and different content Research on this topic, I hope to help students will be more active and aggressive in acquiring, understanding a profound knowledge of the lesson

Of all reasons above, I strongly research and test subjects: “SOME STEPS TO

HELP WEAK STUDENTS IN GRADE 10 TH AT TRIEU SON 3 HIGH SCHOOL LISTEN EFFECTIVELY" Hoping to contribute a small part in adjusting teaching

methods to achieve better efficiency

II Purposes for research:

With the successful research topics and experience will help initiatives have been experienced staff follows:

- How to organize an effective lesson

- Steps to conduct an effective Listening lesson

- Guide students to practice to have the skills and techniques of well Listening

III Practical basic:

Thematic topics revolving around the study of teaching and learning subjects he heard of teachers and high school students secondary grades 10,11, secondary school subjects Trieu Son 3 Therefore I applied this research on student of 2 classes: 10C36,10E36

IV Methodology:

- Observing method: Conductor examine, take part in colleague’s class

- Discussing, exchanging method: after finishing class, they exchange their own knowledge to get advance experience for the next times

- Experimental Method: Teachers conduct lessons based on clearly purpose of each Listening class

- Checking method: Teachers make questions to check students on understanding contents

PART B: CONTENT

I Logical background:

1 Purpose of teaching:

Actually the purpose of teaching English is not only applying knowledge for students but also teaching them how to speak English fluently Speaking ability of students is shown by skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing English listening skill is set up through a tightly studying and hard-working process Beside of studying time at school, students themselves have to practice listening by different kinds of ways Listening skill is to use knowledge into understood lessons in English

2 Main and basic factors affect directly to a effective lesson:

a Teacher:

- With new teaching method , teacher plays an important role in controlling all activities during the lesson

- In order to set up an effective listening, teacher need to follow rightly below factors:

+ Select and use flexibly teaching method that matching appropriately with the contents of each lesson

+ Organize, control lessons and divide reasonable time

+ Use skillfully equipment supported for teaching

+ Create new teaching devices

+ Make inspiration on lessons to attract students’ attention

b Listening techniques:

Listening techniques including content of Listening teaching which rules over choosing, applying methods into lessons Each one has to match totally with content of each lesson (teaching grammar, teaching speaking and teaching writing)…

c Equipments supporting for Listening:

Using picture as one of kind equipment supporting for teaching foreign language in common and English in particular which are considered as a way of showing exactly content in the text book because text book shows text only and listening content is saved into cassette In order to study these records well, listener has to understand clearly the meaning In addition, teaching tools are also effective devices in improving teaching method, promoting motivation and creating interest for students

Essential tools for the subject:

- Cassette

- Tape-recorder

- Pictures included in each lesson or topic of text book

- Drawing or tools made by teacher

d Students:

In the relationship between teaching and learning: teacher is the person who plan, guide students in getting knowledge by themselves

Students need to have necessary skills in listening lessons

II Real situations in teaching listening lesson in Trieu Son 3 High School:

1 Advantages:

Although affected by subjective and objective condition, we could get over difficulties to improving English teaching quality meeting the programs in text book

a Teachers

- Have good basic teaching skills

- be able to organize effective listening lesson

- Combine teaching technologies flexibly

- Make lessons more interesting and effective by using suitable teaching tools for each topic

- Apply advanced devices to the lesson such as : cassette, video, projector

b Students:

- Get familiar with listening subjects

- Understand and distinguish the native speaker voice

- Catch listening text with simple contents and task followed after the 3rd times listening

2 Disadvantages:

a Teachers :

Some teachers still get trouble in choosing appropriate methods, technic and have no trategy for different lessons in different period of the leson They even have not used modern teaching devices fluently

b Students:

- Lack of motivation in learning English

- Have not accessed media to practice listening English

- Are not confident to speak English because they afraid of making mistakes

- Have not caught the speaking speed of native speakers

c Teaching devices:

- Lack of many teaching devices such as: pictures, video, cassette…

- Records quality is not really clear, parasitic noise as well as sound from recorder…

d Detail investigation:

During teaching process, I am responsible for Grade 10 I research study status of student based on subject; therefore, I draw experience for myself At the beginning of school year, I plan clearly and use detail methods to investigate study status of class that

is belonged to my controlling Through investigation, I realize that most of them do not handle vocabulary and grammar, their listening and English communication skills are not good The detail result after investigation as below table:

III Som steps to carry out the listening lesson effectively:

1 Make plan for a Listening class:

a To teacher:

In order to have an effective listening lesson, teachers need to do following steps:

- Understand clearly content of Textbook, teacher’s notebook:

Textbook and teacher’s notebook are important that help teacher in organizing, controlling the lesson into right way, dividing time for each step and activity scientifically

-Research the purpose of teaching requirement :

The purpose and the requirement of class is the last target that needs both teacher and student reach to In Listening class, it requires all pupils practice and develop basic skills such as: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing (especially is Listening) After finishing comprehensive listening part, students have to understand clearly content and

do some supporting exercises

- Choosing, combining Listening techniques flexibly and appropriately:

Choosing Listening technique is based on content of lesson, characteristic, ability

of specific class There are 3 periods on this teaching Listening progress:

The first one: Pre-Listening, the second one: While-Listening and the last one: Post-Listening In each period, there are specific techniques matching suitably with each

lesson

- Make use of equipment and devices applying for teaching:

- Using cassette:

+ Before starting a class, preparing carefully radio, clear tape and standby battery avoiding cut-off electricity

+ Ensure safety when using

+ Do not use without reading instruction carefully

+ Consider necessary, effectiveness, exact time for each part…

-Using illustrating pictures

+ Pictures in Textbook:

One of the best advantages of Textbook is including a lot of illustrating pictures If you make use of those pictures, it will help students understand the lessons clearly and that also is the main purpose

+Illustrating pictures:

This is a compulsory requirement It is not highly beautiful but having relation directly to reality In case of without buying, you can enlarge illustrating pictures in textbooks to use

-Make lesson plan reasonably and scientifically:

Teacher need make clearly what is going to be done before each class, such as: which activities, time for each one, requirement of each part, kind of student’s answers

-Discuss and exchange about teaching techniques:

The effective of lesson will be raised at higher level if teachers exchange teaching experience and give the new ideas for the lesson This not only helps to raise effectiveness of Listening lecture but also useful with other skills

b To students:

Teacher should require student well-prepare before each lesson by:

- Make a list of open questions related to the next lesson, therefore they have enough time to study and discovery, research, documents in detail …

- Require student complete some exercise involved in content of Listening lesson as well as other classes

- Encourage them to be more confident and active, creative by making questions, problems…

2 Conduct teaching progress perfectly:

For a basic grammar or vocabulary lesson, there are 3 periods in this progress: Pre-Listening, While-Listening and Post-Listening This progress help student not only understand clearly lesson but also use flexibly listening skill in true communication However the first issue is that teacher should determine clearly purpose and requirement

of each listening lesson, guide student complete tasks for the next periods

* Pre-Listening (about 10 minutes):

(True/ Prediction, Open Prediction, Ordering, Pre-Questions)

This step help student have direction, idea about topic or situation before listening

- Teacher should help students prepare listening lesson by: remind questions about topic of this listening lesson, require them observe picture, read-out word and guess what topic is, who is talking…

- Teacher can offer their pupils to work in group and guess about topic through and situation in listening record Maybe they do not know exactly what record is about but having good spirit and emotion to study well

- Teacher helps students overcome difficulties in pronunciation or new structures

or basic knowledge that they can be faced

- In conclusion teacher informs students know how many times they will be heard, and guide mission when listening (choose True or False, answer questions…)

* While-listening: (about 20 minutes):

(Selecting, Deliberate mistakes, grids, Listen and Draw, Comprehensive Question) This is a step which the students have chance to practice In this period, teachers give formats of lesson and require students to perform At the same time students can make mistakes so teachers focus on correct mistakes for students and give the right

answers

Teachers turn on radio or read listening section from twice to third (if content is quite difficult, students can be listened till one more time) At the first time, students are familiar with comprehensive listening and embracing lesson‘s content At the second time students listens information exactly to complete lesson At the third one, pupils listen and check the lesson that they have done The main target of comprehensive

listening is to make students understand key content of the lesson as well as get attitude and view of author Therefore, teachers give students to listen to whole of the lesson to they can touch normal means as well as arrangement of the whole lesson Then should be listened to each paragraph again to touch result/ effect or listen to difficult small size to assert answers Should be prevented or students listening to each sentence or each word because it makes learner familiarize with understanding each sentences meaning when they listen

* Post-Listening (at least 15 minutes):

(Role play, Recall the story, Write-it-up, Further practice…)

This is practicing after listening period On the period, students use knowledge,

language skill that be practiced on the “While-Listening” period to actual

communication situation, meaningful After listening student need to carry out some lesson such as: report lesson result to class or group, other students listen and give

comment idea or correct each other Teachers need to mix other skills to develop

listening lessons more such as: recall, write-it-up, discussion…

IV Organization steps:

Presentation: SOME STEP TO HELP WEAK STUDENTS IN GRADE 10 TH AT TRIEU SON 3 HIGH SCHOOL LISTEN EFFECTIVELY"

In my point of view.I only want to lay tress on the strategy to teach each kind of exercise in listening lesson.In general.there are 4 kind of exercises in listening lesson:

True-False Statements, Number the picture, Gap-Filling and Anwsering the question.

So for each kind of exercise, I have chosen each different strategy

1 FOR TRUE-FALSE STATEMENTS TASK:

Step 1:

- Ask students to read all statement carefully and help them with the new words

Step 2:

- Ask students to underline key words or phrase words in each statement

Step 3:

- Ask students to find out all synonyms and antonym with the underlined words

or phrases if there are

Step 4:

Using the radio effectively is one of the good way to help students to listen well.Stop at exactly the key words or phrase will help students get the information correctly and easily

EXAMPLE:

UNIT5:(English 10) TECHNOLOGY AND YOU.

Part C: Listening(Page 57)

Task 1: Listen to an old company director talikng about his experience of learning how to use a computer Decide whether the statements are true (T) or false (F)

1 The man was worried when his son bought a computer

2 The man became worried when his secretary asked him

to buy a computer

3 The man decided to take some computing lessons

4 His son didn’t understand about the computer

5 The man understood the lessons very well

6 The man continued to learn how to use a computer after

a few lessons

Ask students to read all statements carefully to choose new words or new phrases

Step2:

Then underline key words or phrases in each statement

1: was worried

2: became worried

3: decided

4: didn’t understand about the computer

5: understood

6: continued to learn

Step 4:

Play the tape twice, then ask students to give their answers And then play once more time At this time, stop at key words or phrases to help them get the correct answer

1: F (was worried but in the tapescript wasn’t worry)

2: T(became worried as underlined word )

3: T(decided as underlined word)

4: F(didn’t understand about the computer but in the tapescript became his teacher )

5: F( understood but in the tapescript didn’t understand)

6: F(continued to learn but in the tapescript didn’t say anything)

2 For numbering the pictures or conversation task:

Step1:

- Tell students what they are going to listen to

- Ask students look at the pictures carefully and guess what is happening in each picture

Step2:

- Let students guess the answer

Step3:

- Require students give all words relating to the picture

Step4:

- Play the tape for twice.Then ask students to give their answer

- Then play tape once more time, at this time stop at key words or phrases to help students get correct answer
