SUMMARY OF MAIN FINDINGS

This study looks at which devices and technologies students check out for loan from college libraries We asked: Have you ever checked out for loan from your college library any of the following? We then asked about a range of devices and technologies, starting with laptops

Student Borrowing of Laptops

9.83% of those sampled had ever checked out a laptop from their college library The percentage of the student body borrowing laptops was highest at research universities at the highest level of research intensity where 13.74% of students had borrowed a library laptop Students raised abroad were much more likely than other students to borrow a library laptop, and more than 22% of them had done so

It appears that about 3% to 4% of the student body borrow a laptop for the first-time year

as the increase in the student population that has done so increases at about this rate; only 4.43% of freshmen had ever borrowed a laptop from the library vs 14.53% of seniors

The lower the income of the students’ family of origin, the greater the likelihood that they have borrowed a laptop; only 5.88% of those whose family of origin earned more than

$150,000 per year had borrowed a library laptop vs 12.55% of those from families earning less than $45,000 per year Students who lean left politically and those living in sororities

or fraternities are also more likely than their peers with other political inclinations or housing arrangements to borrow a laptop Gay students, and student with particularly high ACT or SAT scores, are other cohorts particularly likely to borrow a library laptop

Student Borrowing of Tablets

Only 2.27% of students in the sample had checked out a tablet for loan from their college library No real cohort dramatically stands out but students in the highest income range, those living at home with their parents or other guardian, those raised abroad, those

leaning left or studying social science – were more likely than others to be tablet

borrowers

Student Borrowing of Smartphones

Only 1% of those sampled had ever checked out for loan a smartphone from their college library Almost all such borrowing was done by students in the lower two income brackets

or of unspecified income Students over the age of 22 and those studying business and economics were more likely than their counterparts to borrow a smartphone from their libraries Most such borrowing was my males, by a ratio of more than 2:1 to females

Almost all was accounted for by students at public rather than private colleges

Student Borrowing of Cameras & Camcorders

7.73% of students sampled had checked out for loan from their college library a camera or camcorder Students at BA-level colleges were much more likely to have done so than those at research universities; 9.56% of students at BA level institutions had checked out a camera or camcorder vs only 2.29% of those at the highest level of research university Indeed, the smaller the institution, the greater the likelihood that a student had borrowed a library camera or camcorder; 11.39% of those in colleges with less than 3,000 full time equivalent student had done so vs only 3.68% of those in colleges with more than 15,500 students

As might be expected students in the fine or performing arts were the heaviest users by subject area; 14.29% had borrowed cameras or camcorders, while students in mathematics and engineering were the least active, only 5.59% had done so

Private college students were much more active than public college students; 12% to

5.04% Students living in sororities and fraternities were big users: 13.64%

Student Borrowing of Mics & Audio Recorders

4% of students sampled had borrowed mics or audio recorders Once again use was

greatest among small institutions, among students in the fine or performing arts, and at private rather than public colleges Use was greater by males than females by a

considerable margin: 5.17% vs 3.46%

Student Borrowing of Tripods

3.55% of students sampled had borrowed a tripod from their college library 7.12% of students from colleges with less than 3,000 students had borrowed one vs only 0,37% of those students at institutions with more than 16,500 students The ratio of use of private to public college students was about 4:1

Student Borrowing of External Hard Drives

Only 1.55% of students sampled had borrowed an External hard drive from their college library Use was concentred among students in business and those in the fine or

performing arts

Student Borrowing of Calculators

4.55% of students sampled had ever borrowed a calculator from their college library Use was greatest at research universities 8.47% of student born abroad had borrowed a

library calculator as had 8.33% of students with a C average or lower 6.45% of students in business/economics had borrowed a calculator but no student in fine or performing arts in the sample had done so, as had only 2.8% in engineering, mathematics or related areas

Student Borrowing of Headphones or Headsets

6.92% of students sampled had checked out a headphone or headset Use was highest in the lowest income tier or by students who did not specify their income 8.05% of males but only 6.39% of females had ever checked out headphones or headsets from the college library Use was quite high by students living alone off campus; 11.54% had borrowed such equipment

Student Borrowing of Student Response Systems or “Clickers”

Only 2.91% of students had borrowed a student response system or “clicker” as they are sometimes known Use rose with the income level of the student’s family of origin; only 1.52% of students in families of origin earning less than $45,000 per year had borrowed clickers from their college library vs 5.88% of those from families earning more than

$150,000 per year Use also tracked political liberality; the further left, the greater the tendency to borrow clickers, except for very right-wing students, who also had a high propensity to borrow them

By a ratio of nearly 2:1 females were much more ardent borrowers than men of this

technology: 3.46% vs 1.72% Gay students were also more than twice as likely as straight students to borrow this technology; 6.93% vs 2.35% Use also tends to correlate with high ACT or SAT scores, the higher the score, the greater the likelihood that a student has

borrowed a clicker from their college library

Student Borrowing of Mobile Device Chargers

8.1% of students had checked out for loan a mobile device charger from their college

library, making it one of the most popular items Such borrowing was particularly

prevalent at smaller institutions; more than 12% of students from institutions with

between 3,000 and 11,999 students (FTE) had borrowed mobile device chargers vs only 4.04% of students from institutions with more than 16,500 students (FTE) More than 15%

of students raised abroad had borrowed a mobile device charger from their library, as had nearly 9.6% of women vs only 4.89% of men Use was much greater at private (10.35%) than public colleges (6.68%) Gay students were much more likely than straight ones to borrow a mobile device charger, 13.86% vs 7.14%

Student Borrowing of Energy Meters

Only 0.18% or a shade less than one fifth of one percent of students sampled had ever borrowed an energy meter from their college Student Borrowing of library All such

borrowing was by heterosexual female students at private colleges aged 20 or younger studying either business or social sciences

Presentation Technology

4.46% of students sampled had ever borrowed projectors, presentation clickers (as

opposed to student response clickers) and other forms of presentation technology The smaller the institution, the greater the likelihood that a student had borrowed such

technology from their library Most use was by students from lower income families, especially those with middle to high ACT or SAT scores

Devices and Technologies that Students Would like to See More of in their Library Technology Lending Programs

We asked those sampled an open-ended question: What technology should your college library add or expand in its current lending program? Responses varied enormously but a few points stood out: more and better laptops, more chargers, 3D printers and audio-visual equipment
