iOS 11.3 is packed with features to make your iOS device even better
5 reasons why you need iOS 11.3 right now
Apple’s big news this month was of course its new iPad aimed at Microsoft and Google’s classroom market share, and we’ve packed this issue with
everything you need to know about
the fresh tablet
Under the radar then was the release
of iOS 11.3 into the wild after months in
development beta phase This isn’t one of
those incremental updates that just offers
a couple of security patches, but a
full-blown release that makes your iPhone and
iPad even more powerful and even more
useful Don’t believe us? Here’s five killer
reasons why you need to download iOS
techniques to recognise the position of 2D images such as signs, posters and artwork, ARKit can integrate these real-world images into AR experiences such as filling a museum with interactive exhibits or bringing a movie poster to life And what’s even better is the view through your device’s camera now has 50 per cent greater resolution and supports auto-focus

send Animoji messages (and even create
Animoji karaoke videos) using their voice
and more than 50 different facial muscle
movements Impressive stuff
3 Battery performance
Apple’s relationship with its iOS
batteries has been headline news in recent
months, so it’s no surprise to see it add a
new feature to your Settings app to boost
transparency The new feature, found in
Settings>Battery and available on iPhone 6
handsets and later, shows you the overall
health of your battery and alerts you if it
needs to be serviced Don’t forget that
Apple will replace any battery for a small fee if it fails a diagnostic test in 2018
Additionally, users can now see if the power management feature that dynamically manages maximum performance to prevent

Which leads on to new feature number 5…
5 Data and privacy
iOS 11.3 and macOS 10.13.4 introduce updated data and privacy information A new privacy icon and detailed privacy information will pop
up whenever Apple asks for access
to personal information to enable features, secure Apple services or personalise an iOS experience It’s
a small thing, but it’s nice to know what’s going on in the background.Additional features include Business Chat, a new Messages feature providing users with a way to communicate directly with businesses, reach a live person to ask a question or make a purchase using Apple Pay Apple Music now streams music videos uninterrupted

Spotlight, Apple’s in-house search engine that is built into all
of its products is surprisingly versatile, a lot more so than you
would think Rather than using it to find files and documents on
your Mac or iOS device, it can also be used as a bottomless pool of
knowledge Here’s how to get the most out of it on your device
One of the best things about
Spotlight is that you can get it
to perform the tasks of specific
apps on your iPhone without
launching the respective app
You’ll be surprised at how
much time it can save you but
you may need to set it up first
What’s impressive about
Spotlight on iOS is that it is
linked with other apps, such
as Maps so that when you
search for a specific place,
like a local business, you can
get essential info and even
directions instantly
Since the release of macOS
High Sierra, your Mac’s
Spotlight search has been
given added versatility to
search for a variety of things
well beyond your Mac Here
are just some of the cool
things you can do with it
Tap each one you want to add
1 Start searching
Swipe to access Spotlight and then enter the name of a local business into the search field and press ‘Search’
1 Check weather
If you want a quick weather report for your local area then just type ‘weather’ into Spotlight and you’ll get a ten-day forecast
2 Enable search
When you tap on an app the ‘Search & Siri Suggestions’
option will be visible Make sure it
is enabled to include the app
2 Tap result
Results will appear as you type Tap on the results under the ‘Maps’ category for a pop-up information box
3 Start using app
Once an app has been enabled, such as Calculator, it will be added to search results In this case you can do sums
3 Get directions
As well as opening hours and the address, you can also tap ‘Directions’ to be taken straight to the business
3 Define words
Rather than going to websites like dictionary.com, you can type in any word preceded
by ‘define’ to get a definition

sometimes a mass
roll-out of a new Mac
operating system can stir up previously
unnoticed gremlins that hamper
certain areas in one way or another
Apple usually addresses early teething
problems with more updates to enhance
and bolster the macOS still further (the latest being 10.13.3), but these won’t always fix everything.
Though it is a secure and stable environment in which to create great things and manage the more mundane aspects of life with ease, you may still encounter odd issues with macOS High Sierra As with all technology, there will
be times when problems occur and you
need a little help to get things working
as they should… which is where we come in We hope to be able to offer solutions to your common problems and also those that are quite rare, with an emphasis on getting everything sorted
in double-quick time so that you can go back to enjoying your Mac safe in the knowledge that if it happens again, you will have the answers you need
Since it was released on 25 September, macOS High
Sierra has had three updates to fix various issues that
users encountered If you are still experiencing any
problems then your first port of call should be to ensureyou are running the latest version (10.13.3) Here’s howyou can check…
1 Click Apple menu
Click on the Apple menu to the far-left
of the menu bar and select ‘About This
Mac’ The Overview tab will tell you what
version of macOS High Sierra is running
2 Software Update
Click on ‘Software Update’ and your Mac App Store app will open to check for updates You can also go straight to the App Store and click on the ‘Updates’ tab
3 Download and update
If a macOS update is available it will appear here, along with the relevant information Simply click on the ‘Update’ button to download and install the update

Connection issues
How can I identify problems with my Mac?
Fix Bluetooth connections
Bluetooth can be a fickle technology and from
time to time you may experience connection
problems With so many wireless technologies floating
around near your Mac it is understandable that problems
may occur, but there is an easy fix that will cure almostall connectivity problems every single time and it onlytakes a few seconds of your time to complete, as we willnow demonstrate
To troubleshoot macOS problems you need to
understand what is in your Mac and what exactly you
are dealing with There is one place where you can look to find
out all of the technical information you need to start fixing any
issues that may arise and within it you will also be able to spot some problems immediately All you have to do to get started
is click on the Apple menu, which is situated in the top-left corner of the screen, to the far-left of the menu bar
1 Find the offender
Go to System Preferences and click
the ‘Bluetooth’ icon to see every previously
connected device listed Find the one that is
failing to connect and click the ‘x’
2 Forget the device
Click ‘Forget Device’ and it will be removed from the list which should resolve whatever the software problem was that was causing the failed connections in the past
3 Time to pair
You can now go through the process
of pairing the device again and the problem should be resolved If it isn’t, there may be a hardware problem in the device itself
Why won’t my Bluetooth device connect?
The main panel
Click the Apple icon top
left and ‘About This Mac’
Click ‘System Report’ and
a panel will appear with a
plethora of information and
a list of topics in the left
column Click any topic to
view more detail
Extra options
In the ‘File’ menu you can also send information to Apple so it can help you troubleshoot remotely, refresh all of the data and even speak the serial number if required There’s
a lot to help you here
Grab the data
The data can be used in many ways to find specific solutions to problems as you can easily copy what
is included to then use in a web search Use as many specifics as possible to narrow down your search
dislodged by seeing what
is available when clicking
‘Memory’ Always check
System Information first
Trang 17To remove or rename devices from your Bluetooth list, go to System Preferences>Bluetooth and then right-click on a device for options.
How do I fix
Wi-Fi signal
problems?
Understanding the performance
of your Wi-Fi network is not
easy because it is by and
large invisible With an app like NetSpot,
however, you can quickly survey your
current and local networks and get a
glimpse of the Wi-Fi quality and even fix
some problems with the data provided
Some technical knowledge will greatly help
the process
4 Going deeper
The ability to survey your network is the main benefit of NetSpot Click ‘Survey’ and follow the instructions that appear Try to use an accurate map of your home or office
5 Use the data
You will be able to use the data that comes from the survey to position routers for the best signal and to check for dead spots
in your network It works well
3 Real-time monitoring
Select a network and click ‘Discover’
to view your network performance in real
time You will quickly see if there is a lack of
consistency in the signal
2 The first scan
The app now scans all of the available networks in your locality You will see a grid displaying various data points including signal and noise levels for comparison
1 Install the app
Go to netspotapp.com and download and install the app The install process is surprisingly simple considering the potential this app offers for data gathering
If you find that disconnecting and reconnecting
a Bluetooth device or multiple devices does not
work, there are other options that will let you change
settings at a deeper level If it is a problem with the
Bluetooth chip itself, for example, then these potentialfixes could resolve all of your Bluetooth problems forgood All you have to do to get started is hold down theShift key and click on the Bluetooth menu
1 The deeper menu
Hold down Shift and Option and click
the Bluetooth icon for a new settings menu
Be careful when using Bluetooth-connected
keyboards and mice during this process
2 Time to reset
Click ‘Reset the Bluetooth module’
and then accept the warning message that appears You will need to restart your Mac once the reset is complete for it to work
3 A final fix
If the reset does not work, click ‘Factory reset all connected Apple devices’ which will take them all back to their original Bluetooth states No data will be removed doing this
My Bluetooth is still not working properly… why?
Reset the module
Trang 18Battery problems
The SystemManagementControllercontrols power usageand sits on the logicboard of your Mac If youare experiencing batteryproblems we wouldsuggest resetting it as alast resort if everythingelse you have tried hasfailed You need to shutdown your MacBook andthen plug it into power
While pressing the power
button, hold down Control-Option (left-hand side of the keyboard) and then release all
Shift-of the keys Press the power button one more time to restart your Mac and it may just help to resolve the battery issue There will be no visual indicators at all that this has happened, but the process is quick to undertake and is well worth trying
Can I quickly
fix my battery?
MacBook batteries will naturally lose usable
capacity over time and there are ways to try to
breathe new life into them, but the first step will be to
look deep into what they have been put through If you
can understand how many charging cycles they havecompleted, you can start to see why the performancemay be lower than expected Here’s our quick guide tochecking on battery health…
1 Go grab an app
Go to the Mac App Store and search
for ‘Battery Health’ Download and install
the Battery Health 2 app and a new icon will
appear in the status bar
2 Check the data
When you left-click the icon at the top you will be presented with full battery health information such as cycle count and the health percentage It’s useful information
3 Regular checks
There are minimal settings within the app, but a periodic check is worthwhile to ensure that your battery is not failing and to offer you some peace of mind
Why is my MacBook’s battery performance poor?
Analyse your battery

.ifixit.com
Saving power
If your MacBook battery power is
low, you can make instant savings by
turning off your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
connections You should also quit any open apps you aren’t using and reduce the brightness of the screen by going to System Preferences>Displays
Trang 19There are few things moreconcerning than not being able tostart your Mac properly You maysee a blue screen which is legendary in the fear
it invokes or you may see error messages, buteither way you will want to do what you can
to bring back a smooth startup process in thefuture The first thing to try is starting up in Safe Mode which will strip down the processes used
to the bare minimum and which is more likely to put you in a position where you can begin to fix the problems
With your Mac powered down, turn on yourMac as normal and then press and hold theShift key Release Shift when the Apple logoappears and wait for macOS to boot in the new Safe Mode You may need to log in as normal, but when done you will now be in Safe Modefor the duration of the session If you use the
‘Restart’ option you will return to normal modewhen it restarts again which gives you thechance to fix the problem first
Why won’t my Mac start up?
It may be that after you check your battery health
you realise that it is a bit long in the tooth, but
is not quite at the level where you need to pay to have
it replaced There are ways in which you can maximise
your daily battery performance and greatly increase theusability of your Mac in the process So if you need tosqueeze a little extra juice out of your battery, considerthese quick and easy power-saving methods
1 The Energy Saver
Go to System Preferences and open
‘Energy Saver’ Set the ‘Turn display off…’
setting to as low as possible and enable the
other options in the ‘Battery’ panel
2 The right balance
When on Power you can leave the Energy Saver preferences set for best performance to gain the right balance Full usage will limit the life of some components
3 Other obvious options
Remember that keeping the screen brightness low and turning Wi-Fi off when it
is not needed will both greatly increase your daily battery performance
Can I make my battery last longer?
Maintain the charge
It’s worth knowing that you can conserve battery power by turning on Private Browsing in Safari as the browser will no longer access your hard drive
Trang 20Responsiveness problems
The first area to look at when your Mac is
struggling to start up as it should is the login
items If you upgraded to High Sierra, it is likely that your
previous login items remained and in the case of some
third-party apps they may be incompatible which couldstop the system in its tracks Here we show you how toaccess your startup items and go about removing them
so that they don’t hamper performance
1 Where are they?
Open System Preferences and then
click ‘Users & Groups’ Make sure your user
name is highlighted on the left and that you
have the right privileges to proceed
2 Open the lock
Click the lock at the bottom and then enter your password to make the changes required This is needed in many areas within System Preferences for your own security
3 Remove them all
Click ‘Login Items’ and then the ‘-’ against any in the list that you believe may
be problematic You can stop them all to be
on the safe side in the first instance
What is causing my Mac to not start?
Remove login items
Perhaps the most common
problem on a Mac is slow
performance and the spinning
beachball that can appear when the
system is struggling to cope with what
is being asked of it You can use apps
to quickly free up RAM and give the
system a temporary boost, but using the
Activity Monitor makes for a better
long-term approach
How can I
speed up
my Mac?
4 Quit the hog
Click the ‘x’ at the top when an app or process is highlighted to quit it This will help speed up performance immediately, but may not be a complete fix
5 Look deeper
Click the ‘i’ when an app is highlighted
to view more information about its performance and the impact it is having on macOS and your hardware
3 Memory is vital
Click the ‘Memory’ tab to see if there
are hogs slowing your Mac This is the
most likely area that will cause performance
problems, especially with third-party apps
1 Open the Monitor
Go to Applications>Utilities and open Activity Monitor Give it a few seconds to scan the system and you will see a sortable grid appear on the screen
Trang 21Open it up
In Applications>Utilities
you will find Migration
Assistant Click the icon
to open it and to begin
moving your data to a new
computer The app will
log you out and close
all apps before it starts
the process
Can I export my data?
Other options
You can also transfer
data from a Windows
PC or to another Mac on
the same network No
matter what your physical
computing situation,
Migration Assistant has an
option that will help you
secure your data
One continual process
Make sure your Mac
is connected to powerthroughout the migrationprocess It is highlyrecommended to ensurethat it goes smoothlyand that you keep all
of your data
From your Mac
Choose the top option ifyou are looking to movedata from your brokenMac to a new model and
if it is connected to thesame network Cleverly, nowires are needed for theMigration Assistant
to work
The most important part of your macOS setup will be
your personal data because this is unique and cannot
be ‘fixed’ using technical methods If all else fails, you can use
the migration assistant to move your information to anotherMac or even retrieve it from your failing Mac to a new model Itworks extremely well
Force-restarting
An alternate way of force-restarting a
frozen or unresponsive Mac is to hold
down the Ctrl+Cmd keys and then
press the power button If you are using an iMac then the power button is situated around the back in the lower-left corner of the display
If your Mac is unresponsive to keyboard commands or has frozen, simply hold down the power button until it shuts down and then press it again
Trang 22Unresponsive apps
Just because data is stored in
iCloud does not mean that it is
immune to corruption problems
You may experience slow performance in
any app that uses this data or even loss of
information, but there is a way to completely
clean your iCloud space and to get back up
and running smoothly again
Why is iCloud so slow
and unresponsive?
1 Back it up
We will use Notes as an example which
are hard to back up Go to the Mac App
Store and download Exporter Select a
destination and your Notes will be backed
up automatically
3 Check your notes
Take some time to check the exported
notes, but everything should be present that
is required Some titles may need manually
adjusting later on in the Notes app
2 It takes time
Depending on the volume of notes,
it may take time for the export process to
complete Remember that your notes retain
some formatting, but will not include media
4 Delete and delete
You now need to select all of your notes
in the Notes app and then click Edit>Delete
Once done, repeat the process in the
‘Recently Deleted Items’ folder
5 Time to restore
The plain text nature of your backup should remove any corruption Select File> Import to Notes and go to backup folder Notes should be restored without corruption
Clean your iCloud
Trang 23App problems can also be solved by going to Go>Library>Preferences and dragging app preferences files to the desktop and then restarting the app.
Disk permissions
If an app fails to start then its disk
permissions may be damaged You
can fix this problem easily – launch
your Mac’s built-in Disk Utility app andthen run its ‘Repair Disk Permissions’
options This shouldn’t be an issue ifyour macOS is higher than El Capitan
If you use any computer on any platform you will
experience apps freezing on occasion This is
unavoidable because third-party developers can only do
so much to make their software as perfect as possible,
but there is a simple process that will let you force quit
an app and get your Mac running again at full speed
This simple key combination is worth remembering asyou may have to use it a lot!
1 A quick combination
If an app freezes, press
Option-Command-Escape and a small panel will
appear Select the app that is stuck and then
click ‘Force Quit’ at the bottom
2 A double check
A warning message will appear that you need to confirm to quit the app As a general rule, only use the force quit process when absolutely necessary
Why are my apps sometimes not responding?
Restart frozen apps
With third-party apps, and even those provided
by Apple, it is good practice to ensure that
you are using the latest versions so that they do not
become slow or suffer from glitches that the developer
has already fixed Keeping your apps updated safelyrequires common sense and a couple of sensible rules
Here we show you how to keep your apps up-to-dateautomatically and more…
1 Automated updates
Go to System Preferences>App Store
and tick the ‘Automatically check for
updates’ box Now tick all other boxes within
this section to receive instant app updates
2 Avoid the betas
Avoid beta macOS versions unless you have a very specific need to install them
They are much more likely to have small issues that could affect performance
3 Third-party updates
When you install apps from outside the Mac App Store take advantage of automatic checking for updates if available If it is not, check for new versions regularly
Why are some apps running slow?
Update your apps
Trang 24Other macOS problems
There may be external factors that affect the
way your Mac and connected services work so
please do not discount the possibility that your Mac is
running perfectly fine Always check externally first to
make sure that the problem is not something that youhave no direct control over If the problem is internet-related then there are ways to check before you startpanicking and pointing the finger at your Mac itself
1 Your internet speed
Use an online service to check your
internet speed It may not be your Wi-Fi that
is causing slow speeds, but a problem with
your service provider
2 Is iCloud up?
You should always check the Apple services status at https://www.apple
com/uk/support/systemstatus/ before undertaking any intrusive troubleshooting
3 Check your router
Slow speeds/intermittent connections could be related to your Wi-Fi router so find the admin settings and research what to do
to make sure everything is working correctly
How can I get my Mac running smoothly again?
Check everything
Disk problems can be complex and are best
approached with a very cautious mind We
would not recommend using third-party apps initially,
but rather the Disk Utility built into High Sierra to quickly
check for and repair any problems that may be present
It is a relatively quick process which is always worth a try
in the first instance Here we show you how to use DiskUtility to identify and solve disk problems
1 The Disk Utility
Go to System Preferences>Utilities and
open ‘Disk Utility’ Select your disk from the
list that appears and then click the ‘First Aid’
icon at the top of the panel
2 Let it run
The process may take some time, especially on larger disks, but let it run until complete for the best results Be patient and you will be rewarded
3 First Aid required?
Hopefully you will see a positive all clear message, but if not the software will then attempt to fix the problems automatically which may resolve the issues permanently
Is my Mac disk damaged?
Analyse your disk
Fixing water damage
If your Mac gets wet, disconnect it from
its power supply, tilt it to remove excess
water and then seal it in a bag with
uncooked rice (to absorb the moisture) and place it in a warm, dry place such
as an airing cupboard for several hours
to dry out
Trang 25If your Mac gets wet, try to remove the battery and any other parts that can
be easily disconnected before going about drying it out
1 The powerful Terminal
When the trash will not empty, go to
Applications>Utilities and open the Terminal
app This app, when learned, is vital to
keeping your Mac running well
2 Empty the trash
Now type ‘rm -rf ~/.Trash/*’ and hit the enter key You will see no discernible change
in Terminal, but you will now have an empty trash can as the system will have cleared it
3 A clean slate
It may only be a physiological change, but for some there is nothing better than seeing a virtual trash can as completely empty It’s a good feeling
Remove it all
A lack of space on any Mac hard
drive can cause the computer
to run slowly and will obviously
limit the amount of data you can store in the
future There are, however, many ways in
which you can free up space without losing
any of the information you need to access
on a daily basis
How can I free
up space on
my Mac hard drive?
4 Use all options
You will now see a selection of options that you can try to free up space Most take
a conservative approach and will only delete data that is no longer required
5 Finder will help
The final approach will be to use Finder and manually delete large files and applications, It will take time, but you have full control at all times while doing this
3 Check your space
Click the Apple logo and the ‘Storage’
tab to see the state of your hard drive
Now click ‘Manage’ to undertake a quick
cleansing process to free up more space
2 Sync and save
In Dropbox go to preferences and click
‘Sync’ Click ‘Choose folders to sync’ to limit how much space is used on your Mac Synced folders still take up Mac space
1 Use the cloud
Use a cloud service such as iCloud or Dropbox to free up space by storing files you
do not use often online There will likely be a subscription charge attached
There will be times when specific files cannot
be removed from Trash because they are being
used by another process or app It can be difficult to
work out exactly what is causing the issue, but there is a
way to override this and empty the trash anyway Make sure the files are not too important to the system before deleting them though – a good idea is to always move them to a separate folder before deleting outright
Why can’t I empty the trash?

Extra help
There are simple and advanced ways to secure
your Mac, but as a first step you should utilise
the tools built into macOS The operating system is
extremely secure by default, but a few extra steps will
give you peace of mind and help to ensure that yourvaluable data does not get stolen in the future Heedthese simple tips and you can help ensure that thecontents of your Mac remain private
1 Be careful with apps
Go to System Preferences>Security &
Privacy and click the lock to make changes
Make sure that only App Store apps are
downloadable within the ‘General’ tab
2 Use the Firewall
Depending on where you use your Mac, the Firewall could be worth enabling This is particularly true when using it in public or in
an unsecured work environment
3 Check the rest
In the ‘Privacy’ tab, take time to see what third-party services are tracking your location Check as many options as possible within ‘Security & Privacy’

Hardware help
Within the standard
warranty period you can
expect the best level of
care, but if your Mac is
crucial to your work you
may want to invest in
AppleCare It could be
more than worth the price
How effective is Apple Support?
Fix it yourself
Before jumping to
support, if you solve
the problem on your
own you’ll increase your
knowledge of macOS
You’ll also be reassured
you can fix anything with
the right information
Support for all
Every single Apple product
is supported from Macs to iPhone all the way through
to iCloud and individual apps No matter what problem you have, you can expect an answer of some kind from Apple Support
Instant contact
You can contact Apple
by phone, email, instant chat or most importantly
by arranging a visit to an Apple store This gives you the reassurance that your hardware can be fixed at the time of your choosing
Problems will appear occasionally that do need
professional support, but fortunately Apple offers a
level of aftercare that few other companies can compete with
No matter what problem you are experiencing, you can expect
a fast and complete experience which will eliminate all possible failures and almost always in a professional and friendly manner Here we guide you around the main options available for getting support with your Apple device
Trang 27If you want to replace an old Mac, try trading it in or selling it Even broken Macs sell on eBay for spare parts so don’t just bin them.
There may come a time where you simply cannot
make your Mac perform at an acceptable level
for long periods due to its age While we do not always
recommend memory cleaning apps, they certainly have
a place when all other solutions fail and can offer ashort-term fix Here we demonstrate how easy it is touse third-party memory-cleaning apps to clean up yourhard drive and enhance the performance of your Mac
1 Choose an app
Go to the Mac App Store and download
a memory cleaning app such as Memory
Clean 2 Install it as normal and launch it to
see what features are available
2 Clean your memory
Find the option to clean the memory and let the app perform its main task It can take a little time, but the performance improvement should be immediate
3 Monitor usage
You will see stats to show how much memory has been freed up and you can also refer to the other data on offer to see which apps are hogging your precious resources
Should I trash my Mac?
Quick memory fixes
Apple trade-in
Apple runs its own trade-in service
for old Macs You can take your old
MacBook to an Apple store for instant
credit or get an estimate online, send your machine off and then receive an Apple Store Gift Card by email that you can use against a new Mac
Problems are rare
Don’t panic!
It may seem, when you
read a feature which
details a variety of
macOS problems, that
you are likely to suffer
from many of them; but
the opposite is true
macOS is incredibly
reliable and for the
vast majority of users
there will be very few
occasions when actual
issues occur that stop
them using their Macs
Indeed, it is likely that
for the first few years of ownership of your Mac everything will work exactly as it should
If, however, you
do experience the occasional glitch these tips may come in handy and help you get up and running in no time at all
In our opinion there is no more reliable operating system than macOS and millions of users will agree with us

Counteract colour casts
Video recording devices such as your iPhone attempt
to capture accurate colours automatically However inmixed lighting conditions such as direct sunlight andshade, some colours may have a cold blue colour cast Or yourcolours may be too warm, causing certain skin tones to lookorange Shots may also suffer from green or magenta tints
DSLRs and camcorders have a range of White Balance (WB)presets such as Daylight or Cloudy This helps the camera warm
up or cool down colours to make them look more natural Youcan also set the camera to Auto White Balance to help it capturetrue colours in any lighting scenario If your camera does add acolour cast or tint to a clip you can balance the colours in iMovie

Final Cut Pro X
Produce a spot colour effect
One way to draw attention to an object in a clip is to
remove all the colour information from the scene apartfrom the colour of the main subject The coloured objectwill then stand out against its black and white environment
This is known as a spot colour effect The latest version of FinalCut Pro X boasts a Hue/Saturation Curves tool that enablesyou to produce the spot colour effect with ease However, thechallenge arises when other parts of the scene share the samecolour as the main subject In our supplied video clip tourists arewearing clothes that match the bus’s red paintwork We’ll showyou how to use masks to remove the desired spot colour fromspecific parts of the scene while preserving it in others
Enable a coloured object to move through a black
and white environment using colour curves and masks

Loop Pointer
This loop pointer appears

Create loops from audio regions
As defining characteristics of digital music production
go, ease of repetition is huge The role of computers in
‘looping’ a section of a digitised waveform, a job thatpreviously entailed cutting and splicing together analogue tape, has been revolutionary Indeed, GarageBand is wholly built onthis speed and convenience in manipulating audio loops toconstruct awesome songs on Mac, iPad and iPhone So in thisguide we’re going back to basics with a look at the techniquesfor identifying a section of an audio region and isolating it tobecome a loop Using the cycle area and region resizing, weillustrate the simplest method for looping a section of a realrecording to repeat seamlessly over multiple bars in your project
We take a look at how seamless, repeatable sections of
audio are formed in GarageBand

Difficulty
Looping sections of your track is easy using the
built-in toolset and can help flesh out your tunes
Creating Apple Loops
By dragging your looping region to the Loop Browser panel (O) you can add it to GarageBand’s library This then opens the “Add Region to Apple Loops Library” dialog that allows a custom name, type, scale and genre
to be defined, while the Instrument Descriptors list and “mood” buttons make searching for the new loop easier

track as required and hover the cursor over the
top-right edge to see a loop icon
5 Drag start
With loop section now found, we can edit most simply by resizing the region Move the cursor over the lower-left edge and drag right
to match the start of the cycle area
8 Extending out
Now click and drag out the region along the track to extend the loop over however many bars Notice the ridge points denoting the start and end of each loop section
6 Drag end
Similarly, we can now edit the end point of our loop by hovering the cursor over the lower-right edge of the region and dragging in left to match the end of the cycle area

Using the File Tempo Editor
Logic Pro’s File Tempo Editor is a new feature introduced as
part of its Smart Tempo technology With Smart Tempo,audio files are analysed so that you can either match theproject tempo to variations in the tempo of imported or recordedaudio, or adjust the tempo of the audio file to match that of theproject The analysis works well most of the time, with the timesignature, tempo and downbeats usually interpreted correctly;
but there are times, particularly with tricky audio material without
an obvious downbeat, when you might need to roll your sleeves
up and give the software a helping hand That’s where the FileTempo Editor comes in, allowing you to tweak the analysis of theaudio files being processed and get the result you want
If your track tempo needs tweaking, then you’ve come to
the right place…

The File Tempo Editor lets you jump in to make manual adjustments to the track timing…
Trang 37Any adjustments made in File Tempo Editor, plus the overall tempo analysis, are stored with the audio file, so are accessible when used in other projects.
Editing with the File Tempo Editor
Step-by-step
1 Get organised
First, drag the audio file ‘Org Riff.wav’ from
the Tutorial Files folder onto an audio track We
don’t want its tempo information imported, so
click ‘Don’t Import’ if asked
2 Tempo fugit
Open the File Tempo Editor by clicking on the audio region and choosing the File Tempo tab from the Editor pane that pops
double-up in the lower half of the screen
3 Waveform display
Click the ‘Analyze’ button to analyse the file The audio waveform appears with orange markers where Logic thinks the beats should
be, with downbeats shown in bright orange
4 Feeling upbeat
Our organ riff contains an upbeat – a note
that occurs before the downbeat of the first
bar Since it’s the first transient in the file, Logic
has misinterpreted this as the downbeat
7 Move all
The lowermost marker is labelled ‘Move
All’ Click-hold and slide it one beat to the right
to shift the downbeat onto the correct transient
– the next one to the right
5 Marker respect
There are two ways to adjust the tempo markers: you can click this button to play the audio file, then tap your Mac’s D and T keys to denote downbeats (D) and beats (T)
8 Zoom and tweak
This will have displaced all the other markers slightly, so use the slider in the top right to zoom in horizontally, then realign each marker using its ‘Move Marker’ handle
6 Get a handle
Alternatively, you can manually edit beat markers in the main display Hover over a marker with the cursor and a set of handles will appear, each with a different function
9 Push the tempo
Now we can conform the project tempo
to the tempo of our audio file by selecting
‘Adapt Project Tempo to Region Tempo and Align to Downbeat’ from the Actions menu
