CONTENT: Elision of vowels
In linguistics, an elision or deletion is the omission of one or more sounds
(such as a vowel, a consonant, or a whole syllable) in a word or phrase Most elisions in English are not mandatory, but they are used in common practice and even sometimes in more formal speech
Weak vowels, especially the schwa / ə/ may be left out (elided) to help us to speak faster They are often elided before /l/, /n/ and /r/
Although schwa elision occurs frequently in both General American and in Standard British English (and certainly in most other English dialects as well),
there are differences between the dialects regarding which syllables are dropped in
which words
Examples Transcription Parts of speech Meaning
comfortable / ˈkʌmftəbl/ adj dễ chịu, thoải mái
documentary / ˌdɑːkjuˈmentri/ n phim tài liệu
practically / ˈpræktɪkli/ adv một cách thực dụng, thực tế
