For Luke Sullivan, who wed long-time love Craig Burns

at the stroke of midnight on January 9 (the second same-sex marriage was legalised), the most poignant part was “staring into Craig’s eyes and finally knowing he’ll be mine forever” Mahatia Minniecon, who

married her partner Teegan also at midnight on January 9, says being married means “never having to advocate for ourselves again” Their stories passionately hammer home the importance of equality and

acceptance, which brings me to this month’s cover star

In her new film Boy Erased, multi-award-winning

actress Nicole Kidman plays the torn mum of a teen pressured to participate in gay-conversion therapy in America As an ardent activist and UN ambassador, Nicole hopes the film’s “love is love” statement will reverberate across the globe, especially as most US states still allow this subversive practice and, shockingly, recent reports say gay conversion is secretly happening

in Australia as well (look out for our investigation in next month’s issue) For more fighting words on the critical need for tolerance, Nicole’s interview on page 78 and “The year we said ‘I do’” on page 44 are must-reads

Elsewhere in the mag, our bumper fashion and beauty sections aim to glamorously ready you for the silly season Our edit of the season’s best party dresses starts on page 131, or be inspired by our luxe make-up looks for maximum impact (page 152) We also have your Christmas shopping sorted with our great gift guide (page 142) You can thank us later!

It’s a jam-packed issue so I hope you find a moment

of peace in this crazy part of the year to read and relax

THE GHAN Plans derailed, our team made fashion lemonade aboard an iconic

Australian locomotive

O N LO C AT I O N

It never rains in Coober Pedy, halfway between Alice Springs and Adelaide Almost never

After travelling through the night, our team was stranded

by a once-in-15-year deluge in outback Manguri that washed out the roads – silk dresses ready and nowhere to go

Of course, with one of the world’s great trains as their mode of transport, the team found its fashion moment right there, track-side

The Ghan itself mixes Australian legend with fine dining, impeccable service and of-board adventures

Our crew dined under the stars, settled in at the bar and slept in drop-down beds In the end, Manguri’s stark red reality proved the ultimate backdrop for The Silk Road, page 120 All aboard!

For details, visit greatsouthern rail.com.au/trains/the-ghan

Slip dresses meet Australia’s red heart Our team played up

a ’90s minimalism energy in remote Manguri – the gateway to Coober Pedy The Ghan’s glamorous cabins (top) provided a stunning contrast to Manguri’s earthy ruggedness We captured our team playing with light and the wide, open space (above right) and posing with the ultimate outback photo prop, The Ghan (above and right).

Where does your gold come

from? That’s the question luxury

house Chopard wants you to ask

MIDAS TOUCH

E T H I C A L J E W E L S

Dirty gold No, it’s

not your beloved bangle that needs a good polish, it’s a term for any

of the precious metal mined in dangerous and disturbing conditions

In 2010, images emerged of child workers handling mercury in gold mines in Mozambique and Zimbabwe; five years later

a damning exposé showed poverty-stricken miners

in the Philippines – some only teenagers – being forced underground and underwater to search for gold

But that doesn’t have to be the way, says jewellery house Chopard, which has committed to using 100 per cent ethical gold in all its jewellery and watch creations

The family-owned business, founded in Switzerland in 1860, has long championed conscious style A-listers Marion Cotillard, Cate Blanchett and Charlize Theron have each turned the red carpet green in its responsibly sourced jewels, from dazzling diamond earrings to luminous opal rings

“TRUE LUXURY COMES ONLY WHEN YOU KNOW THE HANDPRINT OF YOUR SUPPLY CHAIN”

– Caroline Scheufele, chopard

CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT

Chopard is committing to traceable gold; bracelets,

$5530 (left) and $5010, 02-8197 6007; Chopard artistic director Caroline Scheufele with actress Julianne Moore.

The house pledges to source gold through fully traceable routes and nurture its relationships with small-scale artisanal mines linked to non-profit initiatives such as Fairtrade and Fairmined

“Ethics have always been an important part

of our family philosophy,”

says Caroline Scheufele, co-president and artistic director of Chopard “True luxury comes only when you know the handprint

of your supply chain and

I am very proud of our gold-sourcing program

I’m so proud to share the stories behind each beautiful piece with our customers and know they will wear these stories with pride.”

This has been the year that ethical fashion went from buzzword to business

as usual, and today Chopard sets a new gold standard The best part?

It’s proof that a beloved bangle can come with a conscience

Meet New Orleans’ all-girl bikie group

Pink-mohawked helmets and magenta-hued burnouts: New Orleans’ first

all-female motorcycle club, the Caramel Curves, isn’t your typical biker gang

Founded in 2005 by Nakosha Smith, the outfit stalled after the city was devastated

by Hurricane Katrina but regrouped the following year as women began to ride

together to heal Today, it comprises 13 members, unified by their passion for

motorbikes and their desire to project a feminine image into the sport Together

they’ve created a community that encourages confidence, camaraderie and riding

while wearing five-inch heels (or Barbie-pink high-tops) “Riding with women is

just diferent,” says member Rochelle Francis “A lot of guys are cocky and think

that women want them because they ride bikes When women ride together, we

can talk about women problems – fashion-wise, hair-wise, life-wise And I’m just

one of those women who’s like, ‘Anything a man can do, a woman can do better.’”

“We called ourselves

‘caramel’ because

of the colour of our skin, and ‘curves’ because we’re curvy women, and we take curves on the bikes,” says Nakosha Smith.
