SYSTEMATICAL INDEX,
The Plants contained in the First Forty-Two Volumes of
the Botanical Magazine are arranged systematically,
N B In the following Index, the Plants are, in general,
arranged according to the System of Linnaeus, and in the order
adopted in the Hortus Kewensis ; but it has been thought right to
make some few changes. L\ which the unnecessary separation of
Plants of the same natural family has been sometimes prevented.
Thus the genera Patersonia, Sisyrinchium, Ferraria, Tigridia, and
Galaxia, which in the Hortus Kewensis are placed in Monadelphia
Triandria, are in our arrangement combined with the Class
volumes, John Bellendbn Ker, Esq are kept together Similar
changes are made in some other instances, which will be found to
be noticed as they occur
As, in the progress of science, many of the names have been
Kewensis, a work considered of the first authority, generally stand
Magazine are inserted below within brackets. But it may be
observed, that many of these changes were first made in the
Maga-zine, by Mr Ker (formerly G awler, whence the signature G.) and
afterwards adopted in the Hortus Kewensis, as has been generally
cases where the name adopted in the Hortus Kewensis is placed
within the brackets and printed in italics, it is designed to mark a
preference of the name above it. And where both the first name and

that within the brackets are printed in roman letters, it is meant
not to determine which is to be preferred, as it may be doubted
will be acknowledged by Botanists in general
