1. Khái niệm về tiền tệ Định nghĩa Tiền là bất cứ cái gì được chấp nhận chung trong thanh toán để đổi lấy hàng hoá, dịch vụ hoặc để hoàn trả các khoản nợ. Định nghĩa này chỉ đưa ra các tiêu chí để nhận biết một vật có phải là tiền tệ hay không. Tuy nhiên nó chưa giải thích được tại sao vật đó lại được chọn làm tiền tệ. Để giải thích được điều này phải tìm hiểu bản chất của tiền tệ. Bản chất Tiền tệ thực chất là vật trung gian môi giới trong trao đổi hàng hoá, dịch vụ, là phương tiện giúp cho quá trình trao đổi được thực hiện dễ dàng hơn. Bản chất của tiền tệ được thể hiện rõ hơn qua hai thuộc tính sau của nó: • Giá trị sử dụng của tiền tệ là khả năng thoả mãn nhu cầu trao đổi của xã hội, nhu cầu sử dụng làm vật trung gian trong trao đổi. Như vậy người ta sẽ chỉ cần nắm giữ tiền khi có nhu cầu trao đổi. Giá trị sử dụng của một loại tiền tệ là do xã hội qui định: chừng nào xã hội còn thừa nhận nó thực hiện tốt vai trò tiền tệ (tức là vai trò vật trung gian môi giới trong trao đổi) thì chừng đó giá trị sử dụng của nó với tư cách là tiền tệ còn tồn tại2. Đây chính là lời giải thích cho sự xuất hiện cũng như biến mất của các dạng tiền tệ trong lịch sử.
