• Ministry of Health virtually only health care provider

• Healthcare comprises only 4.1% (2011) of the nation’s GDP

• Poor financial and geographical access to services a large issue for the population

• 63% of nation’s health care expenditure is out-of-pocket patient expenses

• System focused on communicable disease and maternal neonatal and child health

• Maternal mortality rate is 405 deaths/ 100 000 live births*

• Infant mortality rate is 54/ 1 000 live births*

* According to the 2005 national census
