The difference between the nuclear family and the extended family is that a nuclear family refers to a singlebasic family unit of parents and their children, whereas the extended family refers to their relatives such as
grandparents, in-laws, aunts and uncles, etc In many cultures, and particularly indigenous societies, the latter
is the most common basic form of social organization
A nuclear family is limited, according to Kristy Jackson of Colorado State University, to one or two parents(e.g a father and mother) and their own child, or children, living together in a single house or other dwellings
In anthropology, they only must be related in this fashion; there is no upper or lower limit on the number ofchildren in a nuclear family
The extended family is a much more nebulous term, but in essence refers to kin or relations not covered bythe above definition In historical Europe and Asia as well as in Middle Eastern, African, and South AmericanAboriginal cultures, extended family groups were typically the most basic unit of social organization The term
Trang 3can differ in specific cultural settings, but generally includes people related in age or by lineage.Anthropologically, the term “extended family” refers to such a group living together in a household, often with
three generations living together (grandparents, parents, and children) and headed in patriarchal societies by the
eldest man or by some other chosen leadership figure However, in common parlance, the term “extendedfamily” is often used by people simply to refer to their cousins, aunts, uncles, and so on, even though they arenot living together in a single group
Historically, most people in the world have lived in extended family groupings rather than in nuclear families. This was even true in Europe and in the early United States, where multiple generations often lived together foreconomic reasons During the 20th century, average income rose high enough that living apart as
nuclear families became a viable option for the vast majority of the American population In contrast, many
indigenous societies and residents of developing countries continue to have multiple generations living in thesame household The rise of the nuclear family in the modern West does not necessarily mean that familyarrangements have stabilized, either The rapid growth in single-parent households, for instance, also represents
a substantial change in the traditional nuclear family More couples are also choosing not to have children at all

The weather is a national obsession in Britain, perhaps because it is so changeable It's the national talkingpoint, and most people watch at least one daily weather forecast Most of the viewers imagine that the presenterdoes little more than arrive at the studio a few minutes before the broadcast, read the weather, and then go home
In fact, this image is far from the truth The two-minute bulletin which we all rely on when we need to know
tomorrow's weather is the result of a hard day's work by the presenter, who is actually a highly-qualifiedmeteorologist
Every morning, after a weather forecaster arrives at the TV studios, his/her first task of the day is to collectthe latest data from the National Meteorological Office The information is very detailed and includespredictions, satellite and radar pictures, as well as more technical data After gathering all the relevant materialfrom this office, the forecaster has to translate the scientific terminology and maps into images and words whichviewers can easily understand The final broadcast is then carefully planned The presenter decides what to sayand in what order to say it Next a “story board” is drawn up which lays out the script word for word
The time allocated for each broadcast can also alter This is because the weather report is screened after thenews, which can vary in length The weather forecaster doesn't always know how much time is available, whichmeans that he/she has to be thoroughly prepared so that the material can be adapted to the time available
What makes weather forecasting more complicated is that it has to be a live broadcast and cannot be recorded Live shows are very nerve-racking for the presenter because almost anything can go wrong Perhaps themost worrying aspect for every weather forecaster is getting the following day's predictions wrong Unfortunately
pre-for them, this is not an unusual occurrence; the weather is not always possible to predict accurately.
These days, a weather forecaster's job is even more complicated because they are relied upon to predict otherenvironmental conditions For example, in the summer the weather forecast has to include the pollen count forhay fever sufferers Some also include reports on ultraviolet radiation intensity to help people avoid sunburn. The job of a weather forecaster is certainly far more sophisticated than just pointing at a map and describingweather conditions It's a job for professionals who can cope with stressful and challenging conditions

"Bill, you never miss!" Joe said admiringly
"Unless I'm in a real game," Bill complained "Then I miss all the time."
Joe knew that Bill was right Bill performed much better when he was having fun with Joe in the school yardthan he did when he was playing for the school team in front of a large crowd
"Maybe you just need to practice more," Joe suggested
"But I practice all the time with you!" Bill objected He shook his head "I just can't play well when people arewatching me."
"You play well when I'm watching," Joe pointed out
"That's because I've known you since we were five years old," Bill said with a smile "I'm just not comfortable playing when other people are around."
Joe nodded and understood, but he also had an idea
The next day Joe and Bill met in the school yard again to practice After a few minutes, Joe excused himself
"Practice without me," Joe said to his friend "I'll be back in a minute."
Joe hurried through the school building, gathering together whomever he could find—two students, a math teacher, two secretaries, and a janitor When Joe explained why he needed them, everyone was happy to help Joe reminded the group to stay quiet as they all went toward the school's basketball court As Joe had hoped, Bill was still practicing basketball He made five baskets in a row without noticing the silent people standing behind him
"Hey, Bill!" Joe called out finally
Bill turned A look of surprise came over his face
"I just wanted to show you that you could play well with people watching you," Joe said "Now you'll have nothing to worry about for the next game!"

Early artists drawing these animals accomplished a monumental and difficult task “They” did not limit
themselves to the easily accessible walls but carried their painting materials to spaces that required climbingsteep walls or crawling into narrow passages in the Lascaux complex
Unfortunately, the paintings have been exposed to the destructive action of water and temperature changes, which easily wear the images away Because the Lascaux caves have many entrances, air movement has also damaged the images inside Although they are not out in the open air, where natural light would have
destroyed them long ago, many of the images have deteriorated and are barely recognizable To prevent furtherdamage, the site was closed to tourists in 1963, 23 years after it was discovered

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
You can usually tell when your friends are happy or angry by the looks on their faces or by their actions This is useful because
reading their emotional expressions helps you to know how to respond to them Emotions have evolved to help us respond to
important situations and to convey our intentions to others But does raising the eyebrows and rounding the mouth say the same
Trang 19thing in Minneapolis as it does in Madagascar? Much research on emotional expressions has centered on such questions According to Paul Ekman, the leading researcher in this area, people speak and understand substantially the same "facial language" Studies by Ekman's group have demonstrated that humans share a set of universal emotional expressions that testify
to the common biological heritage of the human species Smiles, for example, signal happiness and frowns indicate sadness on the faces of people in such far- flung places as Argentina, Japan, Spain, Hungary, Poland , Sumatra ,the United States, Vietnam, the jungles of New Guinea , and the Eskimo villages north of Artic Circle Ekman and his colleagues claim that people
everywhere can recognize at least seven basic emotions: sadness, fear, anger, disgust, contempt, happiness, and surprise There are, however, huge differences across cultures in both the context and intensity of emotional displays - the so called display rules In many Asian cultures, for example, children are taught to control emotional responses - especially negative ones- while many American children are encouraged to express their feelings more openly Regardless of culture, however, emotions usually show themselves, to some degree , in people's behavior From their first days of life, babies produce facial expressions that communicate their feelings
The ability to read facial expressions develops early, too Very young children pay close attention to facial expressions, and by age five, they nearly equal adults in their skill at reading emotions on people's faces This evidence all points to a biological underpinning for our abilities to express and interpret a basic set of human emotions Moreover, as Charles Darwin pointed out over a century ago, some emotional expressions seem to appear across species boundaries Cross - cultural psychologists tell us that certain emotional responses carry different meanings in different cultures For example, what emotion do you suppose might be conveyed by sticking out your tongue? For Americans, this might indicate disgust, while in China it can signify surprise Likewise, a grin on an American face may indicate joy, while on a Japanese face it may just as easily mean
embarrassment Clearly, culture influences emotional expressions.

Basic to any understanding of Canada in the 20 years after the Second World War is the country’s impressive population
growth For every three Canadians in 1945, there were over five in 1966 In September 1966 Canada’s population passed the 20
million mark Most of this surging growth came from natural increase The depression of the 1930s and the war had held back marriages, and the catching-up process began after 1945 The baby boom continued through the decade of the 1950s, producing
a population increase of nearly fifteen percent in the five years from 1951 to 1956 This rate of increase had been exceeded only once before in Canada’s history, in the decade before 1911 when the prairies were being settled Undoubtedly, the good
economic conditions of the
1950s supported a growth in the population, but the expansion also derived from a trend toward earlier marriages and
an increase in the average size of families In 1957 the Canadian birth rate stood at 28 per thousand, one of the highest in the worlk
After the peak year of 1957, the birth rate in Canada began to decline It continued falling until in 1966 it stood
at the lowest level in 25 years Partly this decline reflected the low level of births during the depression and the war, but it was also caused by changes in Canadian society Young people were staying at school longer more women were working; young married couples were buying automobiles or houses before starting families; rising living standards were cutting down the size of families It appeared that Canada was once more falling in step with the trend toward smaller families that had occurred all through the Western world since the time of the Industrial Revolution
Although the growth in Canada’s population had slowed down by 1966 (the increase in the first half of the 1960s was only nine percent) another large population wave was coming over the horizon It would be composed of the children who were born during the period of the high birth rate prior to 1957.

There are a number of natural disasters that can strike across the globe Two that are frequently linked toone another are earthquakes and tsunamis Both of them can cause a great amount of devastation when they hit. However, tsunamis are the direct result of earthquakes and cannot happen without them
The Earth has three main parts They are the crust, the mantle, and the core The crust is the outer layer of
the Earth It is not a single piece of land Instead, it is comprised of a number of plates There are a few
enormous plates and many smaller ones These plates essentially rest upon the mantle, which is fluid As aresult, the plates are in constant - yet slow - motion The plates may move away from or towards other plates In
some cases, they collide violently with the plates adjoining them The movement of the plates causes tension in
the rock Over a long time, this tension may build up When it is released, an earthquake happens
Tens of thousands of earthquakes happen every year The vast majority are so small that only scientific
instruments can perceive them Others are powerful enough that people can feel them, yet they cause little harm
or damage More powerful earthquakes, however, can cause buildings, bridges, and other structures to collapse. They may additionally injure and skill thousands of people and might even cause the land to change itappearance
Since most of the Earth's surface is water, numerous earthquakes happen beneath the planet's oceans.Underwater earthquakes cause the seafloor to move This results in the displacement of water in the ocean. When this occurs, a tsunami may form This is a wave that forms on the surface and moves in all directionsfrom the place where the earthquake happened A tsunami moves extremely quickly and can travel thousands ofkilometres As it approaches land, the water near the coast gets sucked out to sea This causes the tsunamis toincrease in height Minutes later, the tsunami arrives A large tsunami - one more than ten meters in height - cantravel far inland As it does that, it can flood the land, destroy human settlements, and kill large numbers ofpeople

The election of Andrew Jackson to the presidency in 1928 marked the political ascendancy of the “common man” in American politics Whereas all previous presidents had been Easterners from well-to-do families, Jackson was a self-made man of modest wealth from the West Born in 1767, Jackson fought in the American Revolution, in which many of his relatives died
Afterwards, he studied law and moved to the Western District of North California When that territory became the state of
Tennessee, Jackson was elected the state’s first congressman His name became a household word during the war of 1812,
when, as a U.S Army major general, he led troops against the Creek Indians in the Mississippi Territory and later defeated the British at New Orleans
After his presidential inauguration, Jackson rode on horseback to the White House to attend a private party Crowds of wishers suddenly appeared at the reception and nearly destroyed the White House as they tried to glimpse the new president The common man had made a dramatic entrance onto the national political scene
well-Jackson’s two terms moved American society toward truer democracy Many states abandoned property requirements for
Trang 39voting Elected officials began to act more truly as representatives of the people than as their leaders As president of the
common man, Jackson waged a war against the Bank of the United States, vetoing the bill that re-chartered the institution,
declaring it a dangerous monopoly that profited the wealthy few
Although he had built his reputation as an Indian fighter during the War of 1812, Jackson was not an Indian hater He adopted what was at the time considered an enlightened solution to the Indian problem-removal Many tribes submitted peacefully to
being moved to the West Others were marched by force to the Indian Territory, under brutal conditions, along what the
Cherokees called the Trail of Tears
One of Andrew Jackson’s most enduring legacies was the Democratic Party, which under him became a highly organized
political party In opposition to the Democrats were the Whigs, a party that attracted supporters of the Bank of the United
States and opposed the tyranny of the man called “King Andrew” A less specific but more basic legacy is the populist
philosophy of politics that still bears the name “Jacksonian Democracy.”

answer to each of the questions from 1 to 8
The work of women has been economically vital since prehistory, although their contributions have varied according to the structure, needs, customs, and attitudes of society.
In prehistoric times, women and men participated almost equally in hunting and gathering activities to obtain food With the development of agricultural communities, women’s work revolved more around the home As urban centres developed, women sold or traded goods in the marketplace.
From ancient to modern times, four generalizations can be made about women's paid work Women have worked because of economic necessity; poor women in particular worked outside the home whether they were unmarried or married, and especially
if their husbands were unable to sustain the family solely through their own work Women’s indentured work has often been
similar to their work at home Women have maintained the primary responsibility for raising children, regardless of their paid
Trang 40work Women have historically been paid less than men and have been allocated lower-status work
Some major changes are now occurring in industrial nations, including the steadily increasing proportion of women in the labor force; decreasing family responsibilities (due to both smaller family size and technological innovation in the home); higher levels of education for women; and more middle and upper-income women working for pay or for job satisfaction Statistically, they have not yet achieved parity of pay or senior appointments in the workplace in any nation.
Artisans working in their own homes not infrequently used the labor of their families This custom was so prevalent during the Middle Ages, craft guilds of the period, including some that otherwise excluded women, often admitted to membership the widows of guild members, providing they met professional requirements Dressmaking and lacemaking guilds were composed exclusively of women
Gradually, the guilds were replaced by the putting-out system, whereby tools and materials were distributed to workers by
merchants; the workers then produced articles on a piecework basis in their homes During the 18th and early 19th centuries, as the Industrial Revolution developed, the putting-out system slowly declined Goods that had been produced by hand in the home were manufactured by machine under the factory system Women competed more with men for some jobs, but were
concentrated primarily in textile mills and clothing factories Manufacturers often favored women employees because of relevant skills and lower wages, and also because early trade union organization tended to occur first among men Employees in
sweatshops were also preponderantly women The result was to institutionalize systems of low pay, poor working conditions, long hours, and other abuses, which along with child labor presented some of the worst examples of worker exploitation in early industrial capitalism Minimum wage legislation and other protective laws, when introduced, concentrated particularly on the alleviation of these abuses of working women.
Women workers in business and the professions, the so-called white-collar occupations, suffered less from poor conditions of work and exploitative labor, but were denied equality of pay and opportunity The growing use of the typewriter and the telephone after the 1870s created two new employment niches for women, as typists and telephonists, but in both fields the result was again to institutionalize a permanent category of low-paid, low-status women’s work.
