TEAM COMPETITION When the National Federation wants to take part in some international games, it must form the national team (scratch team) First of all, the list of possibles (candi- dates) is made These are picked up by their former perfor- mances and personal bests

A preliminary selection being made, the coaches get down to building up the team This pre-games conditioning consists, primarily, in week-to-week stamina and technique training Then the make-up of the team is decided in many trials and tryouts For this purpose the ¢rainees engage in

a number of regularly scheduled meets These practice games show who of the sportsmen brings himself up to splendid form, who shows off-form and, thus, help to de- cide who is going, after all, ¢o fill in for the team (to make the team, to join the team, to pull for the team, to

be put on the team) and who is likely’ to be left out (be- hind)

Sometimes the team stages a competitive tour of differ- ent countries or trades games with some foreign side Only after such final tryouts all the berths on the team are filled Besides the first-string sportsmen the coaches have to think about a strong bench If, for instance, a leading sports- 4

ENTRY When some international competitions are to be held (winter or summer Olympics, European or world champion- ships, University Games, interzonal or zonal tournaments, cup games, etc.), the organizing committee sends out invi- tations to different countries to enter (for) the contest Sometimes the tournament bracket is limited to a certain

amount of national teams; sometimes, when the competition

is likely to attract too big an entry, preliminary elimina-

5

Trang 6

tion matches are scheduled The national téams may file their applications to participate in the competition up to the day on which the official entry deadline is fixed The entries are closed on this day and those who are late do not go

Some days before the opening day the national sides report (themselves) at the venue of the competitions It may happen that a certain team may withdraw from the games

It is then striken off the tournament field for non-appear- ance —and all its matches with other teams are called off

An Interview with a Coach

Reporter Comrade Smirnov, I hear that the handball

squad of the Burevestnik club has been promoted to play in the nationals

Smirnov Yes, we’ve won nearly all the qualifying prelim-

inaries and thus found ourselves in the “A” league

R What are the boys busy now with? Putting in their training session?

Trang 7

Oh, no Now the boys are seeking promotion at the exams Spring sessiom, you know

Well, I’ve overlooked it completely But what are your plans for the coming season?

§ In July we are going to get through some /oose plays,

warm-up meetings and friendlies We'll both meet some teams away and entertain several here

I know that all the teams of the “A” league are broken

up into two subgroups How does the fixture list look for you? You are going to have top competition, aren’t you?

Right you are All the sides look tough Take Trud for one That’s the team we are to play the opener against Last year we lost the semi-final cup game to them Now the boys are looking forward to a come-back but it’ll

be a hard job to do for we’ll meet them on their home ground,

But they say your away record is pretty good, isn’t it?

Yes, more or less, if I may say so

Only four teams from each subgroup will have the edge

in this final pool Have you got any hopes to qualify for the finals?

Hard to say We’ll try not to be among the also-rans, though

Discussing Soccer Players and Teams

Nicholas Mike, what do you say to our watching a good

soccer match at the city stadium?

Michael No, count me out I don’t feel like venturing out now It’s likely to rain

N I hardly recognize you, | must say Never a what’s-it- like-outside problem for you when football is concerned and such a surprise! Growing older, eh?

M No, not that bad, so far The trouble is I don’t feel

quite the thing for a couple of days Cold, 1 think Nothing much, though So either you go alone or make

me company in front of the TV screen

N Got no habit of leaving my friends out in the cold So let

it be TV to-night When will they televise the game?

M Don’t know for sure But here’s a sports paper Switch

the thing on, will you? It’ll be on the air in ten min-

utes

I think our city stands a good chance of winning this

cup match now that Petrov keeps goal again A superb goalie he is and in excellent trim now

N Yes, but what happened to him last season? He suf- fered a sudden setback in form I think it was all due

to the injury he sustained at the outset of the season

Probably But this year he really works wonders —

never off key, no letdowns, always in top forin

20

Trang 21

In short, the old-timer has got all his pep back But what about the goalie of the visiting side? As far as

I know, he is a crack player too -

N Yes, only think of.that, man: this starry-eyed tyro got a berth on the team only a couple of seasons ago

And now, I hear, he is already in (he selectors’ eye

for the Republic’s eleven!

M I’ve really never seen such a cool-headed and daring

chap as he is Well, Nick, prick up your ears: the

sports commentator is declaring the make-up of the guest side Their forward line looks formidable, doesn’t it?

N Yes, quite an all-star gang I presume we are in for

a bitter disappointment to-night: they will make short

work of our side Take my word for it—we’ll run into trouble in no time

M Well, you sound convincing but I bet the home side

may spring a big surprise on the guests I assure you

their forwards will fail fo grind down our defence but

our youngsters from the forward line may prove fo be too much for their defense

A Radio Feature

Sportscaster Well, friends, it is sure to be a grand match judging by its opening stage A typical cup meet Need I explain to you that cup encounters are played off

on the elimination principle: no ties; a win in every match

21

Trang 22

is a must If the sides draw after 90 minutes of play, they are given two 15-minute overtime periods so that one of the teams should come out on top If there happens nothing

of the sort, a replay is slated You simply must win the day or get out All this, naturally, turns cup fixtures into red-letter days for soccer fans

But let’s get closer to our game

Only seven minutes passed from the kick-off but the going is already pretty fough The visiting club team is experienced and well-concerted The home side, being re-

cently rebuilt, has much young blood and, I believe, it

has all the makings of a top-class team But so far the guests are outplaying and outmanoeuvring the hosts They’ ve captured the initiative and launched a tempestuous onslaught Now it’s looking like a goal for the guests! Ivanov, their inside-right, has got a long pass from the kick-off circle right into the penalty area: He has only one defender to

dodge! He does it! I don’t think the goalie will make

a save A blinding shot and there it is! One—nil in favour

of the guests!

The hosts are beginning from the midfield A ground pass to the left-winger, he sends it on to the inside-left who is not guarded at the moment and the latter is break- ing through to the close approaches of the goal His oppo- nent is trying hard to rob him of the ball No luck!

A fierce drive! Oh, what a muff he is! To be in a superb

shooting position and to kick two meters wide of the upright Evidently the boy feels jittery No wonder — it is his first tryout On the whole, he is not a flop: guick on the run, good at faking in situations and goal-hungry One day he may develop into a really good player

10 minutes to run before the breather and the game is running as it used to—the guests are playing an attacking game and enjoying a clear territorial advantage The hosts, being in a:tight corner, can’t direct the play

Oh, here it comes! The right back of the guests is send- ing the ball to the right-winger What an accurate pass

it is! The right-winger is tackled by his opposing number but manages to keep the ball all to himself by a series

of good feints Now he’s sending it over to the centre- forward A lightning thrust into the goal area! Oh, what bad luck for the hosts! They bring him down just in front

of the goal mouth A penalty kick for dirty play!

22

Trang 23

A hush has fallen upon the stadium All players but number 9 are leaving the penalty area A run-up! A jet- like shot! And the ball finds its way into the net! He’s smacked it right into the top right-hand corner The goalie tried fo tip the drive over the bar and thus to deflect it for the corner but it was no go

Well, the visitors lead 2:0 The home eleven seem

stunned and paralyzed Will they find the fighting spirit

to get out of the hole and pull up even? I hope so

The referee’s whistle brings the first half to a close

So, it is half-time and the home side is.2 goals down Now [| return you to our central studio only to meet again in a quarter of an hour

Double for Trouble

After B B Fowler This is a story of some dark sides of professional sports in Can-

ada A crack hockey-player Bucko Mackay was intentionally injured

ina match and taken to hospital His berth on the team was taken

up by Johnny, a vigorous promising youth who came, in the long run, to be respected and loved by the whole team Led by him, the team chalked up an impressive string of victories

But Johnny turned out to be dishonest Abe’ Gravot, the mana- ger of the Eskimo side, who is guilty of maiming Bucko Mackay, -

bribed Johnny before match of the Wolves with Eskimo Johnny dis-

appeared,

28

Trang 29

By fate afternoon, with Johnny still missing, we all began to worry in earnest By 5 o’clock we were all in a sweat Johnny had disappeared as clean as if he’d crawled under the ice somewhere

We were in the dressing-room before the game when we got the word that sunk us completely Someone at the sta- tion had seen Johnny He had gone down to the train with

two of Abe Gravot’s boys, who stayed with him till the

train pulled out What had happened was plain: Abe had slipped Johnny cash to get him out of the game And Abe was too smart to allow anyone fo double-cross him Johnny had evidently gotten his money from the two tough boys

as the train was pulling out That must have been zhe deal that Gravot had made with him

It was a smart deal The train was the Limited Her next stop was at a station forty miles down the line Johnny could not get back before the morning

I thought Matt would go crazy He had the wires hot trying to locate a plane, If he could have gotten a plane,

I know he would have gone after Johnny and dragged him back, But the only plane was chartered Matt was frothing

at the mouth But underneath was something more tragic than anger, The old guy had a knife in his heart In spite

of everything, he had really liked the kid He Aad built all his hopes on him And now the kid had let him down

in the dirtiest possible manner,

Putting on my Aarness, | felt sick I Aad learned to like the fool kid, too I liked him more than I had ever imag- ined, I knew it now, when he had sold us out

We went on the ice a sick crowd Oh, we played tough hockey That was something we could do, no matter how

we felt But it was like it was after we lost Bucko Our spark plug was gone I did manage ío jam one goal through

in the second period But while we were doing that the Eskimos punched two packs past our goalie

Between the first and second periods our dressing-room was soggy with gloom No one spoke The boys just sat along the benches and stared at the floor

We were like that between the second and third periods

when the door slammed open and a bolt of lightning hit

us I mean that The effect Johnny made when he walked

29

Trang 30

in was like a bolt of lightning I could see the line of boys on the opposite bench stiffen and stare at Johnny as

if they were stunned

Matt was the first one to move He rushed across the room and grabbed Johnny’s sleeve, roaring thickly, “You doubie-crosser, where have you been?”

Johnny jerked out of his overcoat and left it in Matt’s grip He flung off his suit coat and began to peel clothes,

rasping, “What difference does it make where ] have been?

I’m back, ain’t 1?”

Matt’s mouth opened and closed like a beached fish, and the kid snarled on, “Now let me get into my outfit You’ve got nothing fo beef about The score is only two to one [ll show you how fo fix that in the next twenty minutes.”

Then ] saw that the kid was perspiring, as though he had already played a full game I couldn’t figure it

I may stick in the big leagues for a long time | may see some thrillers when the boys get hot and stage some veal hockey But 1 know that I’ll never see hockey such

as we played in that last period We boiled onto the ice when the signal soundedi I thought the roof of the rink would lift with the yell that went up from the crowd when they saw Johnny I stole a glance over at the box where Abe Gravot was squatting and grinned at what I saw Abe’s jaw dropped, letting his mouth sag open The cigar he was smoking fell down his chest leaving a trail

of sparks and ashes His face turned the color of dough, and his fat hands shook as he gripped the partition in front

~ of him

Then the referee’s whistle blasted, and the Wolves ex- ploded into action Johnny: caught the puck from the oppo- site center, whirled and jumped toward the Eskimo defense

He was running like a runaway locomotive by the time he hit the defense

Gaff Hibbing was set for him He gave Johnny the hip, and the kid just jolted a little, while Gaff went sprawling and Johnny shot the puck like a bullet over his body at the goalie The goalie took it in the chest, and it bound-

ed way down the Eskimo defense zone An Eskimo wing took it there and jumped toward me I grinned as J crouched to meet him This was one guy | intended to toss up into the back row of seats

30

Trang 31

But I never had a chance Johnny came roaring out of the mess in the Eskimo defense zone He overhauled the Eskimo wing as if he had been frozen to the ice, snapped

the puck with his stick, whirled on a dime, and charged

back toward the Eskimo goal It had to be a score You had only to look at Johnny to know it He wasn’t going

to take anything but a@ blink of the red light for an answer Johnny made it inside of two minutes of play He slammed the rubber home across a half-dozen players tan-

gled in a mess on the ice He came back to center ice, and

yelled in a shrill, boyish voice: “Come on, you guys! Let’s have some hockey.”

From where I stood I could see the grins of hard de- light on the faces of the two wings Then the referee’s whistle shrilled, and Johnny was away again

I got just one chance Two of the Eskimo forwards came down on us, snapping the puck between them in short, zippy passes I took the left winger just as he got the puck, slapped it away from him, and started on a rush of

my own I was a guy who knew how to keep his mouth shut But that time I yelled as I started my push for the Eskimo goal

I was back in my position when I saw Gaff Hibbing get set for his gang-up act Johnny had cut over to the wing position and was going up along the boards like the tail of a comet, just as Bucko had that night a year be- fore I jumped as I had that night, because I saw it com- ing I knew I wasn’t going to make it Gaff and his pal were tearing in on Johnny I sobbed in my throat—then gasped Johnny saw them and knew what was coming He stopped short in a mist of shaved ice that spumed up from his skates Gaff couldn’t stop He smacked futl into the boards Then Johnny stepped back, and Gaff fell as limp

as an empty sack

They carried Gaff off, and Johnny went to the penalty box He sat there doing his time, leaning stiffly forward against the boards, his eyes on the game, his jaw set and his eyes gleaming coldly We didn’t give ahoot about play-

ing a man short The Eskimos hadn’t the necessary dynamite

to blast past us for a goal now

But they did try hard They were making a desperate rush just as Johnny finished his time and shot out of the penalty box as though there was a charge of gunpowder

Trang 32

behind him He took the puck away from the Eskimo for- ward before the poor guy knew Johnny was back And Johnny was tearing in on the defense

He stayed up in the Eskimo defense zone playing like

a crazy man He raged around the Eskimo net, slamming’ shots from all angles When an Eskimo forward did break loose, Johnny overhauled him before he could pass center ice, and took the puck back to the storm center that he had created around the Eskimo end of the rink

I stood five minutes of it playing my defense position

on a team that didn’t need a defense; then I yelled at Lou Manson, “Nuts with this! Let’s go up there where we

can play some hockey.”

The rest of that period was just Roman holidays, Johnny scored twice more, and I managed fo pin the goalie’s ears

back once myself Before the final signal sounded, I was

really sorry for that poor guy in the Eskimo nets

The mob of us were pushing into the hotel when we

saw Abe in a semicircle with his tough boys Gravot saw Johnny and mouthed, “You dirty double-crosser!” Johnny

grinned thinly “Double-crosser, my eye I took the train, didn’t [>”

Then he smacked Abe with his open hand across the

mouth and nose “That,” he said harshly, “is for Bucko.”

Up in our room with Matt and the boys crowding be- hind us, we got the story: “I wanted to hit Abe where it hurt the most,” Johnny said “So [ smacked him in the pocketbook.” He grinned crookedly, “The fat slob paid me

two thousand to take that train out of town tonight He

forgot something that even you guys forgot — that the Lim- ited slows to thirty miles an hour at Crockett’s Junction

I,dropped off there and hoofed it back I knew I could make

it in time for that third period, and figured one period was

all [ needed I knew you boys would keep the score low.” Sure, we had never thought about that I could picture

the kid dropping off the Limited roaring along, with the

sides of the track sheathed with ice, making a beautiful chance for a guy to shoot under the train and come out - hamburger And I could also picture that eight miles of icy, rutted road back to town, with the kid hiking, some-

times running, back to the rink and that last period

“Bucko Mackay needs money You guys paid his hospital bills I’m sending him Abe’s two thousand in the morning.”

32

Trang 33

Old Matt beamed, “I knew you were going ¢o fill Bucko’s

shoes when I first saw you on the ice, kid.”

Johnny gave us a real smile then; that made him look

boyish and friendly “Fill’em, Matt? I’ve been in them all season I brought his skates along to wear when J carne here to play and square things for him I’m Bucko’s rother,”

Before a Volleyball Game

Lucy Hallo, Mary!

Mary Hallo, Lucy!

I strained a leg muscle some days ago and I'll set back

to training no sooner than in two weeks or so

I’m sorry for you Look down, the umpire is calling the teams out By the way, who are those two tall girls?

They are head and shoulders above the rest

Yes, both in direct and figurative sense They are very good at killing balls

| think our girls should block them with utmost care

Surely But, what’s more, we place great hopes in our

back line, in one-pass combinations and a special Japa- nese service we have been training hard

Well, let’s see how the girls will capitalize on their strong points 1 hope they’ll stand up éo the rivals

Points Set Match

(A) A score of zero, or nothing, is designated “love”

(B) First point: scores 15

(C) Second point: scores 30

(D) Third point: scores 40

(E) Fourth point: scores “game”

The server’s score is always called first, thus if the server had made two points, and the receiver none,

_ the score would be called as: 30 — love

(F) In the event a game score reaches 40:40, or in oth-

er words both players acquire three points each, the score is 40-all or deuce

“ (G) The game is won by one player winning two points

in succession, the first point is called “advantage”, the second, if won immediately after the advantage point, is game

(H) Ii one player gains the advantage point, and loses the next point, the score reverts to deuce If the server gets the advantage point, it is called “advan-

-tage server”, or in common usage, “ad-in” If the

receiver gains the advantage point, it is called “ad-

vantage receiver”, or in common usage, “ad-out”

A set is composed of 6 games Each set must be won

by a margin of at least two games Set scores may range from 6— love to any number such as 7:5, 8:10, 12:10 etc., depending upon how many games had to be played for one player to gain the margin of two games

Women’s play: 2 out of 3 sets

Men’s play: 3 out of 5 sets,

Two Friends at a Ping-pong Table

Andrew Will you have a table-tennis game?

Boris Oh, no What an insult to me, a hockey-player!

It is such a trifling unmanly game I’ve heard it was

- invented by two waiters in Paris who indulged in toss-

of history So, will you prove that table-tennis is noth- ing much to a hockey-player?

Why not? Tremble ye, I will hand you a bad defeat

No objections whatsoever Which racket would you pre- fer — the thin one or the so-called “sandwich”?

It’s all one to me but which is better?

The sandwich to be sure Well, shoot off your service,

(The boys are playing.)

I should not say my placement of the ball is the top

of accuracy I mishit every now and then By the way, what sort of racket grip have you got over there? Looks rather queer

It’s the Asiatic penholder grip Helps to keep up anon- stop attack, you know

I must use it right away

No, you should not [21 get you nowhere for this grip calls for a long training You’d better concentrate on spins Without them all your balls are so easy for re- ception

Which can’t be said of yours Your strokes seem to be

bolting out of nowhere, They are much too fast for me

I’ve lost 10 points in a row Besides, your sfices are

very hard to cope with

Never say die, old chap Mind that very often you miss

because you just don’t look at the ball and it must be

done all the time it’s in play In addition, your stance

and especially your footwork are rather poor And body- positioning matters a lot in table-tennis

Yes, I feel so But the most baffling thing is the system of your strokes, After some preparatory forehands you make
