I INTRODUCTION

1.1 Reasons for choosing the research

According to the trend of globalization, English has played an increasinglyimportant role in all areas As a result , the deman of learning English has beenconstantly increasing

Before that trend, English is considered the dominant subjects in the schools

To be a young and enthusiastic teacher with teaching English, I always put out formyself the question is: How do students love and become good at this subject?Through five- year practical teaching in Tho Xuan IV High school , I learned anexperience is: If students take part in a warm- up activity before starting a newlesson, the lesson will be more successful From this fact, I study and design somesuggested warm- up activities for teaching English 10 (term I) to attract students’attention in new lessons and make these lessons more interesting and effective.This

is the reason why I choose the topic: “Using some useful warm- up activities for teaching English 10- semester 1- Standard syllabus to motivate the study excitement of the students in Tho Xuan IV high school ”.

1.2 Aims of the research

My research is aimed at:

- Provide some basic knowledge about the role of warm- up activity

- Offering some suggested warm- up activities for teaching English 10 (term I)suggest for teaching English 10- term 1 to the teachers

1.3 Participants of the research

This research was applied to six classes of tenth grade in Tho Xuan IV highschool (10A1, 10A3, 10A5- academic year 2014- 2015 and 10A2, 10A3,10A4-academic year 2015- 2016) Each class contains different number of participantswho are of mixed genders and language ability In term of language competence,most of them might be considered as pre – intermediate students

1.4 Methods of the research

- Observing students working

- Analyzing students’ results

II CONTENT 2.1 Theoretical Background

All of us know that the new version of English 10 was brought to thecurriculum from the academic year 2006- 2007 and it has really brought a newwind in method of teaching and learning foreign language However, in my opinionbeside the advantages the textbook English 10 also brings some disadvantages toboth the learners and teachers

About advantages, the English 10 has 15 lessons which focus on 6 topics (Youand me, education, community, nature, recreation and People and place) These

topics are rather suitable with the hobby and knowledge of students They can notonly make use of the general knowledge but also encourage them to find out someother informations relating to the lesson These information will provide studentsthe necessary knowledge.

About disadvantages, some units contain some difficult structures to thestudents For example, in unit 8: Make ends meet, meet one’s wish… Beside that,the tasks of a few writing and speaking lessons are boring and unrelated to the topic

of the Unit, which causes the difficulties in designing lesson plan to the teachers.Being aware difficulties and advantages above, myself as well as other Englishteachers always think carefully before the completing a lesson phan.And thisresearch is also aimed at promoting the advantages and limiting the disadvantages

of teaching English in general and teaching English 10- semester 1 in particular

2.2 The status of the problem

From all the periods , I see that most of our students are still passive, notreally interested in learning English This consequence is partly because ourstudents come from the rural regions, their knowledge of English is not rich,especially some know very little about English When the teacher asks them to readthe reading passages to give the answers, they all give correct answers but some ofthem do not understand the content of the lesson In the examinations, they do not

do the part reading well and some do not know how to do these exercises

That is the reason why I think that we must design the really interestingwarm-up activities for each new lesson to attract students’attention and make themmore excited with the lessons

2.3 Some useful suggested warm- up activities for teaching English 10-

semester 1

2.3.1.Unit1: A day in the life of…….

a Lesson A: Reading

Name : Describing pictures

Type : class work

- Ask students to guess the content of the lesson

b Lesson B: Speaking

Name: matching words

Type: group work

Materials: poster, large papers, board pens

Time: 5 minutes

Procedure:

- Devide the class into 2 groups

- Provide each group with 1 large and 1 board pen

- Give instruction and time allotted

- Check groups’ work and declare the winner

Name: Network

Type: class work

Material: board, chalk

Time: 3 mins

Procedure:

- write the key word on the board

- ask students to think of the related words and say in English

- Lead in the lesson by some guiding question:

d Lesson D: writing: Writing a narrative

Name: Telling a story

Type: Individual work

Materials: Nothing

Time: 3- 5 Mins

Procedure:

- ask sts to think of the most impressed story that they witnessed or heard

- call on 1 advanced to tell in front of the class( Encourage him/ her to use English)

- Give some other guiding questions:

+ What items are mentioned in his/ her story( Time, event, place……)

+ Which tense is used in the story?

e.Lesson E: Language Focus:

Name: Describing pictures

Type: Class work

Materials: Pictures, chalk

Time: 2-3 mins

Procedure:

- Hang the 2 pictures on the black board and ask sts to speak out what they cansee in these pics

- Write the 2 key words on the black board

- Call on some students to read the words

- Write the phonetic forms of them and read the words aloud several times

a.Lesson A: Reading:

Name: Slap the board

Type: Group work

Materials: stick cards

Time: 3- 5 Mins

Procedure:

- Divide the class into 2 groups

- Ask each group to send 5 presentatives and set in a queue

- Provide each group of students 7 stick cards & Give instruction

- Read aloud sentence by sentence

- Give feedback

- Declare the winner

7 Suggested sentences:

+ I often play ………online when I have free time

+ After the school year, I’ ll go on a summer……

+ Soccer and badminton are my favourite………

+ Do you usually watch…….at 6p.m everyday?

+ What is the ……….like today?

Materials: Poster

Procedure:

- Hang on the poster

- Give instruction and time allotted

- Check with the whole class

- Give instruction

- Hang on the poster

- Call on 2 representatives of the 2 groups to come to the board and write down the key words

- Hang on the 2 pics and give the questions:

- Call some students to read aloud

- Read as model 3 times

2.3.3 Unit 3: People’ s background

Procedure:

- Divide the class into 2 teams

- Give instruction

- Read aloud the 3 clues for 1 person in turn

- Write the 2 words on B B and read them aloud 3 times

- give questions and ask sts to answer:

+ Can all of you hear/ speak/ see?

+ What are people who can’t hear/ speak/ see called?-THE DISABLED

+ Is it easy or difficult to teach the disabled?

+ May they have normal education?

Procedure:

- Divide the class into 2 teams

- Give instruction: each group take 1 turn to choose the number they like each number carrries 1 word, the group have to make sentence with thisword.The group which complete 3 sentences on the same horizontal orvertical line first will be the winner

- Monitor the game

- Declare the winner

- Write the phonetic forms and lead in the lesson

2.3.5 Unit 5: Technology and you

a.Lesson A: Reading

Name: Matching words and pictures( names of hardware)

Materials: pictures, stick cards

Time: 3-5 mins

Procedure:

- devide the class into 2 teams and give instruction

- hang pictures on black boarb

- call on the representative of each group to stick cards with the right words onthe pics

- declare the winner

- Asks sts to tell the difference in pronouncing these words

- Give the phonetic forms

- asks sts to open the textbook and answer the questions:

+ What is pic 1 about? What can you see in pic…?

+ What do you know about it?

+ Which site do you like to visit best?

b.Lesson B: Speaking

Name: completing the pic

Procedure:

- T draw a horizontal line on the black board

- Asks some sts to come to the board and complete it in their own opinion

- Praise the st if he/ she can draw a pic of a boat

- If sts can not draw a boat, T has to do it

+ Have you ever traveled by boat? Do you like it?
