Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 61 to 70

One of the factors contributing to the intense nature of twenty-first-century stress is our continual exposure

to media - particularly to an overabundance of news If you feel stressed out by the news, you are far from alone Yet somehow many of us seem unable to prevent ourselves from tuning in to an extreme degree The further back we go in human history, the longer news took to travel from place to place, and the less news we had of distant people and lands altogether The printing press obviously changed all that, as did every subsequent development in transportation and telecommunication

When television came along, it proliferated like a population of rabbits In 1950, there were 100,000 television sets in North American homes; one year later there were more than a million Today, it's not unusual for a home to have three or more television sets, each with cable access to perhaps over a hundred

channels News is the subject of many of those channels, and on several of them it runs 24 hours a day What's more, after the traumatic events of September 11,2001, live newscasts were paired with perennial

text crawls across the bottom of the screen - so that viewers could stay abreast of every story all the time Needless to say, the news that is reported to us is not good news, but rather disturbing images and sound bytes alluding to disaster (natural and man-made), upheaval, crime, scandal, war, and the like Compounding the problem is that when actual breaking news is scarce, most broadcasts fill in with scare stories about things that possibly might threaten our health, safety, finances, relationships, waistline, hairline, or very existence in the future This variety of story tends to treat with equal alarm a potentially lethal flu outbreak and the bogus claims of a wrinkle cream that overpromises smooth skin

Are humans meant to be able to process so much trauma - not to mention so much overblown

anticipation of potential trauma - at once? The human brain, remember, is programmed to slip into alarm

mode when danger looms Danger looms for someone, somewhere at every moment Exposing ourselves to such input without respite and without perspective cannot be anything other than a source of chronic stress

Question 61: According to the passage, which of the following has contributed to the intense nature of

twenty-first-century stress?

A Our continual exposure to the media

B The degree to which stress affects our life

C An overabundance of special news

D Our inability to control ourselves

Câu 1 đoạn 1: “ one of the factors contributing to the intense nature of twenty-first-century stress is our continual exposure to media - particularly to an overabundance of news”

Question 62: In the past, we had less news of distant people and lands because

A the printing press changed the situation too slowly

B printing, transportation, and telecommunications were not developed

C most people lived in distant towns and villages

D means of communication and transportation were not yet invented

Đoạn 2: “The further back we go in human history, the longer news took to travel from place to place, and the less news we had of distant people and lands altogether The printing press obviously changed all that, as did every subsequent development in transportation and telecommunication”

Question 63: The pronoun "them" in paragraph 3 refers to _

A cable access B TV channels C television sets D TV news

Them = cable access: truy cập cáp

Question 64: The word "traumatic" in paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to _

Trang 9

A fascinating B exciting C upsetting D boring

Traumatic = boring: đau thương

Question 65: According to the passage, when there is not enough actual breaking news, broadcasts

A are full of dangerous diseases such as flu

B send out live newscasts paired with text across the screen

C are forced to publicize an alarming increase in crime

D send out frightening stories about potential dangers

Câu 2, 3 đoạn 5: “ Compounding the problem is that when actual breaking news is scarce, most broadcasts fill in with scare stories about things that possibly might threaten our health, safety, finances, relationships, waistline, hairline, or very existence in the future This variety of story tends to treat with equal alarm a potentially lethal flu outbreak and the bogus claims of a wrinkle cream that overpromises smooth skin.”

Question 66: As stated in the passage, a flu outbreak and the bogus claims of a wrinkle cream tend to

A involve natural and man-made disasters B be scarce breaking news

C be warmly welcomed by the public D be treated with equal alarm

Câu 3 đoạn 5: “This variety of story tends to treat with equal alarm a potentially lethal flu outbreak and the bogus claims of a wrinkle cream that overpromises smooth skin.”

Question 67: Which of the following is NOT true, according to the passage?

A Many TV channels supply the public with breaking news

B The only source of stress in our modem life is the media

C Many people are under stress caused by the media

D The news that is reported to us is not good news

Question 68: The word "slip" in paragraph 6 is closest in meaning to _

A release B fail C bring D fall

Slip = bring: đem đến

Question 69: According to the passage, our continual exposure to bad news without perspective is

obviously _

A the result of an overabundance of good news

B the result of human brain's switch to alarm mode

C a source of defects in human brain

D a source of chronic stress

Câu 4 đoạn 6: “Exposing ourselves to such input without respite and without perspective cannot be anything other than a source of chronic stress.”

Question 70: What is probably the best title for this passage?

Jazz has been called “the art of expression set to music”, and

“America‟s great contribution to music” It has functioned as popular art and enjoyed periods of fairly widespread public response, in the “jazz age” of the 1920s, in the “swing era” of the late 1930s and in the peak popularity of modern jazz in the late 1950s The standard legend about Jazz is that it originated around the end of the 19th century in New Orleans and moved up the Mississippi River to Memphis, St Louis, and finally to Chicago It welded together the elements of Ragtime, marching band music, and the Blues However, the influences of what led to those early sounds goes back

to tribal African drum beats and European musical structures Buddy Bolden,

a New Orleans barber and cornet player, is generally considered to have been the first real Jazz musician, around 1891

What made Jazz significantly different from the other earlier forms of music was the use of improvisation Jazz displayed a break from traditional music where composers wrote an entire piece of music on paper, leaving the

musicians to break their backs playing exactly what was written on the

score In a Jazz piece, however, the song is simply a starting point, or sort of

skeletal guide for the Jazz musicians to improvise around Actually, many of

the early Jazz musicians were bad sight readers and some couldn‟t even read music at all Generally speaking, these early musicians couldn‟t make very

much money and were stuck working menial jobs to make a living The

second wave of New Orleans Jazz musicians included such memorable players as Joe Oliver, Kid Ory, and Jelly Roll Morton These men formed

small bands and took the music of earlier musicians, improved its

complexity, and gained greater success This music is known as “hot Jazz”

due to the enormously fast speeds and rhythmic drive

A young cornet player by the name of Louis Armstrong was discovered by Joe Oliver in New Orleans He soon grew up to become one of the greatest and most successful musicians of all time, and later one of the biggest stars in the world The impact of Armstrong and other talented early Jazz musicians changed the way we look at music

21 The Passage answers which of the following questions?

(A) Why did Ragtime, marching band music, and the Blues lose popularity after about 1900?

Trang 13

(B) What were the origins of Jazz and how did it differ from other forms of music?

(C) What has been the greatest contribution of cornet players to music in the twentieth century?

(D) Which early Jazz musicians most influenced the development of Blues music?

22 According to the passage, Jazz originated in

(A) Chicago (B) St Louis (C) along the Mississippi river (D) New Orleans

23 Which of the following distinguished Jazz as a new form of musical expression?

(A) the use of cornets (B) “hot Jazz” (C) improvisation (D) New Orleans

24 The word “skeletal” in line 16 is closest in meaning to

( ID: 91131 ) Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions that follow

Legend has it that sometime toward the end of the Civil War (1861-1865) a government train carrying

oxen traveling through the northern plains of eastern Wyoming was caught in a snowstorm and had to be abandoned The driver returned the next spring to see what had become of his cargo Instead of the

skeletons he had expected to find, he saw his oxen, living, fat, and healthy How had they survived?

The answer lay in a resource that unknowing Americans lands trampled underfoot in their haste to cross

the “Great American Desert” to reach lands that sometimes proved barren In the eastern parts of the United States, the preferred grass for forage was a cultivated plant It grew well with enough rain, then

when cut and stored it would cure and become nourishing hay for winter feed But in the dry grazing lands of the West that familiar bluejoint grass was often killed by drought To raise cattle out there seemed risky or even hopeless Who could imagine a fairy-tale grass that required no rain and somehow made it possible for cattle to feed themselves all winter? But the surprising western wild grasses did just that They had wonderfully convenient features that made them superior to the cultivated eastern grasses Variously known as buffalo grass, grama grass, or mesquite grass, not only were they immune to drought; but they were actually preserved by the lack of summer and autumn rains They were not juicy like the cultivated eastern grasses, but had short, hard stems And they did not need to be cured in a barn, but dried right where they grew on the ground

When they dried in this way, they remained naturally sweet and nourishing through the winter Cattle left outdoors to fend for themselves thrived on this hay And the cattle themselves helped plant the fresh grass year after year for they trampled the natural seeds firmly into the soil to be watered by the melting snows

of winter and the occasional rains of spring The dry summer air cured them much as storing in a barn cured the cultivated grasses

Loneliness is a curious thing Most of us can remember feeling most lonely when we were not in fact alone at all, but when we were surrounded by people Everyone has experienced, at some time, that utter sense of isolation that comes over you when you are at a party, in a room full of happy laughing people, or in an audience at a theatre or a lecture It suddenly seems to you as if everybody knows everybody else, everybody is sure of himself, everybody knows what is going on; everybody, that is, except you

This feeling of loneliness which can overcome you when are in a crowd is very difficult to get rid

of People living alone - divorced, widowed or single people - are advised to tackle their loneliness by joining a club or society, by going out and meeting people Does this really help? And what do you do

if you are already surrounded by people?

Trang 24

There are no easy solutions Your first day at work, or at a new school or university, is a typical situation in which you are likely to feel lonely You feel lonely because you feel left out of things You feel that everybody else is full of confidence and knows what to do, but you are adrift and helpless The fact of the matter is that, in order to survive, we all put on a show of self-confidence to hide our uncertainties and doubts So it is wrong to assume that you are alone

In a big city it is particularly easy to get the feeling that everybody except you is leading a full,

rich, busy life Everybody is going somewhere, and you tend to assume that they are going somewhere nice and interesting, where they can find life and fulfilment You are also going somewhere, and there

is no reason at all to believe that your destination is any less, or, for that matter, any more exciting than the next man's

The trouble is that you may not be able to hide the fact that you are lonely, and the miserable look

on your face might well put people off After all, if you are at a party you are not likely to try to strike

up a conversation with a person who has a gloomy expression on his face and his lips turned down at the comers So trying to look reasonably cheerful is a good starting point in combating loneliness, even

if you are choking inside

The next thing to avoid is finding yourself in a group where in fact you are a stranger, that is, in the sort of group where all the other people already know each other There is a natural tendency for people to stick together, to form 'cliques' You will do yourself no good by trying to establish yourself

in a group which has so far managed to do very well without you Groups generally resent intrusion, not because they dislike you personally, but because they have already had to work quite hard to turn the group into the functioning unit To include you means having to go over a lot of ground again, so that you can learn their language, as it was, and get involved in their conversation at their level Of course if you can offer something the group needs, such as expert information, you can get in quickly

In fact the surest way of getting to know others is to have an interest in common with them There

is no guarantee that you will then like each other, but at least part of your life will be taken up with sharing experiences with others It is much better than always feeling alone If all this seems to be a rather pessimistic view of life, you have to accept the fact that we are all alone when it comes down to

it When the most loving couple in the world kiss and say goodnight, as soon as the husband falls asleep, the wife realizes that she is alone, that her partner is as far away as if he were on another planet But it is no cause for despair: there is always tomorrow

( ID: 91653 ) Read the following passage, and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet

to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions

Alexis de Tocqueville, the French political scientist, historian, philosopher and politician, is most famous for a four-volume book he wrote called “Democracy in America” He came to America in

1831 to study the American form of democracy and what it might mean to the rest of the world After

a visit of only nine months, he wrote a remarkable book which is regarded as a classic De Tocqueville had unusual powers of observation He described not only the democratic system of government and how it operated, but also its effect on how Americans think, feel, and act Many scholars believe he had a deeper understanding of traditional American beliefs and values than anyone else who has

written about the United States What is so remarkable is that many of these traits which he observed

nearly 200 years ago, are still visible and meaningful today His observations are also important because the timing of his visit, the 1830s, was before America was industrialized This was the era of the small farmer, the small businessman, and the settling of the western frontier It was the period of history when the traditional values of the new country were newly established In just a generation, some 40 years since the adoption of the U.S Constitution, the new form of government had already
