Aftershock Hits Japan’s Food Industry

On behalf of Asia FOOD BEVERAGE Thailand Magazine and Thai Trade and Industry

Media Co., Ltd., I would like to express my sincere condolences to the people of Japan in relation

to the natural disaster that occurred in early March

The Japanese National Police Agency has confirmed more than 20,000 dead or missing and

over 125,000 buildings damaged or destroyed According to the Japanese government, the cost

of the earthquake and tsunami could reach 309 billion USD, while the World Bank estimates the

damage at between 122 billion and 235 billion USD

The world’s fifth largest earthquake since 1900 could also have a dire impact on the Japanese

food industry Since March 11, samples of Japanese fresh produce exports, such as seafood,

meat, fruit and vegetables, have been tested for radioactive contaminants in many countries, such

as Singapore, Thailand, South Korea, the Philippines and Hong Kong, due to fears of radiation

poisoning from the Fukushima nuclear plant.

According to Sushmita Mahajan, a Frost & Sullivan research analyst on chemicals, materials and

food practices, the fear of nuclear radiation spreads fast, “The radiation threat has had a negligible

effect on our food requirements in Singapore However, if food is banned when it’s actually harmless,

this has the potential to negatively affect our relationship with Japan, as well as the network of related

local industries dependant on these imports This may be out of proportion with the insignificant

amounts of radiation involved Since the issue of radiation is a relatively unknown field, there is a

need for increased awareness We are apprehensive about nuclear radiation, all the more so as it

is seen as an invisible threat.”

While Rabobank has stated that concerns over food safety and supply problems are likely to hit

exports and lead to a rise in imports, particularly from the US, Australia and China, Jean-Yves Chow,

a senior industry analyst for North-east Asia at Rabobank’s Food and Agri Research Department

and the lead author of the report, remarked, “The radiation issues at the Fukushima plant have

heightened food safety concerns at a time when Japanese food self-sufficiency is already low Japan

may need to revise its food security strategy in order to manage the country’s risk.”

Nevertheless, no traces of radiation have been reported in food samples imported from Japan

since the massive earthquake Only in Singapore did the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority reportedly

detect low levels of contamination in imported fresh produce from the affected prefectures of Tochigi,

Ibaragi, Chiba and Ehime, yet short-term consumption of food at this radiation level does not pose

a health hazard.

in 2000 estimated that 10% of the energy used annually in the US was consumed

by the food industry A 2002 study from the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health estimated that, using the current system, 3 calories of energy were needed to create 1 calorie of edible food

And that was on average Some foods take far more, for instance grain-fed beef, which requires 35 calories for every calorie of beef produced What’s more, the John Hopkins study didn’t include the energy used in processing and transporting food Studies that do estimate that it takes an average of 7-10 calories of input energy to produce one calorie of food

ICF International has summarized the

Challenges for Environmentally Preferable

Environmental Agency (U.S EPA) The

objective of this report is to assist the

consumption trends of such sector

Key Opportunities for Environmentally

Preferable Energy Outcomes

The analysis focuses on five key

opportunities for improved environmental

performance with respect to energy

usage in industrial manufacturing sectors

Following is a brief definition of each

opportunity:

- Cleaner fuels Current fuel sources

could be replaced with alternate fuels that

have lower carbon emissions per unit of

energy This opportunity also includes

self-generation of energy with renewable

resources (biomass, solar, wind, and

geothermal)

- Combined heat and power (CHP) A

ENERGY TRENDS AND THE CONSUMPTION

of fossil fuel usage in industrial farming is not transporting food or fueling machinery; it’s chemicals As much as 40% of energy used in the food system goes towards the production of artificial fertilizers and pesticides Fertilizers are synthesized from atmospheric nitrogen and natural

amount of energy Producing and distributing them requires an average of 5.5 gallons of fossil fuels per acre

Packaging, Processing, and Storing Food: Approximately 23% of the energy

used in our food production system is allocated to processing and packaging food

industrial farming draws on the economy

of scale, food is increasingly grown in

common practice to ship food not just around the country, but around the world (In 2005, more than 120 billion USA of agricultural products crossed US borders

as imports and exports.)

Improving Energy Efficiency in Food Processing Machinery

In a food processing operation, as in any industrial facility, there are multiple places to look for energy saving opportunities While food processors can’t control rising global energy costs, they

Electric motors: Electric motor-driven

systems are estimated to consume more

usage represents almost all of the

pump and fan applications In most food

processing facilities, pumps and fans run

adjusted by automatic valves or other mechanical means This can be highly inefficient because motors running at constant speed always consume the maximum amount of energy, even during periods when lower speed operation
