Trang 1Seminar-Workshop on “Approaches to Language Teaching:
ELT Methodologies & Strategies Revisited”
RATIONALE:
History of Language Teaching swings like a pendulum between extremes of methods, as Languge teachers, not perfect but moving to perfection search for the best However, many English as Foreign Language (EFL) & English as Second Language (ESL) teachers have unconsiously stuck to the traditional ways, either finding them effective or having the misconception that the modern approaches are applicable only in the inner circle setting (native speakers) They have overlooked Language’s essential characteristics
Language is dynamic, infinite & ever changing;hence, the best Language Teachers are generally dynamic & innovative in terms of the way they develop & experiment with their teaching methodologies They should explore pedagogical means to equip their students with lifelong command of the target language
Relatively, during this seminar workshop, the EFL teacher participants are expected to:
a.) clarify the distinctions in the overlapping definitions of Language Teaching trio of terms—Approach, Method & Tecnique
b.) revisit Language Universals & have a bird’s eyeview of what linguists call, World Englishes
c.) review Language Theories & relate them to English Language Teaching (ELT) methodologies & strategies
d.) probe on the nature of social, cultural & pragmatic features of language & relate the developments in Language Teaching
e.) recall Language Teaching approaches, adapt & adopt the most effective in their real classrooms
f.) present group outputs & hold Demonstration Teaching showing the application of the approaches revisited
