Trang 5Apprenticeships - an Overview
• It takes a year as a minimum.
• A mixture of on and off the job training
working for an employer
• Work with a mentor.
• May include day release to a local
college
• Apprentices do REAL jobs for REAL
employers for REAL money.
Trang 6Earn while you Learn
• Start earning from day one of your Apprenticeship.
• Earn a minimum of £2.65 per hour – although many
employers pay more The rates of pay are advertised with
each vacancy.
• As your skills develop your pay could increase.
Trang 7What if I’m not ready to start an
Apprenticeship?
• Access to Apprenticeships - If you know what you want to do but
don’t feel ready to start a full-time work placement, you can spend
some time preparing for your next stage.
• Foundation Learning - If you don’t know what you want to do yet
and perhaps need time to consider your options or improve your
basic skills, then register on one of the foundation courses
Both of the above options are run at various sites in the city and offer
support and individual programmes to get you to the next stage.

There are three levels of Apprenticeships available:
Intermediate Apprenticeship – this is where the majority of
Apprentices will start
Advanced Apprenticeships
Progressing to:
Higher Level Apprenticeships / University
Around 250 different career choices in 80 different sectors
Promotion in the workplace – leading to higher paid jobs
Trang 9Apprenticeship Framework
The Apprenticeship Framework is made of 3 components:
You will be subject to normal employee terms and conditions You will
work a minimum of 30 hours per week and will have a minimum of 20
days holiday a year.
Trang 11Higher Apprenticeships
Higher Apprenticeships are not available in all sectors, but there are many existing professional qualifications that will allow you to progress through Apprenticeships to Foundation Degree level and beyond if this is your aim
Key Facts about Higher Apprenticeships:
•Designed to meet employers’ needs for higher level skills
•Combine a range of on and off the job training
•Will vary in time to complete depending on your role and need of your employer
•Usually include a HNC/HND, NVQ Level 4 and a Higher Education element as part
of the framework, with accreditation by a University

The Local Picture
In York the following frameworks are currently available:
•Accounting (YH Training Services and York College)
•Business Administration (JHP Training)
•Children & Young People’s Services (JHP Training)

If you are prepared to travel outside York to work, for example to Leeds there
are frameworks available in Accountancy (Kaplan), Information Technology (Leeds City College) and Engineering (Leeds College of Building)

Things to consider about travelling to learn and work:
• Many people travel into York from surrounding areas York’s young
people will face competition from others outside of the city
• Most jobs are not as close to home as schools are
• Young people should consider travelling to work in neighbouring cities such as Leeds, where there are a broader range of opportunities available

• Aged 16 years old or more
