

I Aims: Through the lesson, students can be better at using the past perfect and can tell the

differences between THE PAST PERFECT vs THE PAST SIMPLE

I WARM-UP: (5’)

- After he had finished his work, he took a rest

- She had studied French before she began to study English

II REVIEWING: (25’)

1 The past perfect

a Form:

- Affirmative: S + had + V3/ed

- Negative: S + had+ not + V3/ed

- Interrogative: Had + S + V3/ed?

b Usage: the past perfect is used to describe:

- An action that began and ended before a particular time or another action in the past

Ex: We had had dinner before 8.00 pm last night.

Lucie had learned E before she came to England.

- An action that happened but didn’t finish at a particular time in the past

Ex: By the time I left that school, I had taught there for ten years.

2 The past perfect vs the past simple

- An action that began and ended before the particular time or another action in the past

The past perfect is used for the first action and the past simple is used for the later one

Ex: After Nam had done his homework, he went to bed.

- They had lived in Dong Thap before they moved to HCM city.

- T gives exercise and

asks Ss to do in 10

III PRACTICE (15’)

Put the verbs in brackets in the past simple or the past perfect tense.

1/ They (go) went home after they (finish) _had finished _ their work.

2/ He (do) _had done nothing before he (see) _saw me.

3/ He (thank) thanked me for what I (do) had done for him.

4/ I (be) was sorry that I (hurt) had hurt

him

5/ After they (go) _had gone , I (sit) sat down and (rest) _rested _.

6/ When I (arrive) arrived _, the dinner (already, begin) had already begun _.

7/ My friend (not see) _had not seen _ me for many years when I (meet) _met _ last week.

8/ He (learn) _had learned English before he (leave) left for England.

9/ In England, he soon (remember) _remembered _ all he (learn) had learned _.

10/ They (tell) told him they (not meet) _had not met _ him before.
