:By the date of initial safety equipment survey or the time limit specified, whichever comes first The SOLAS Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (1974) prescribes in its Chapter 5, entering in force on July 1 , 2002, as follows:

AIS is made compulsory as per the Sth Conference of SOLAS Convention of Contracting Governments: "Ships, other than pas-senger ships and tankers, of 300 gross tonnage and upwards but less than 50,000 gross tonnage, will be required to fit AIS not later than the first safety equipment survey after 1 July 2004 or by 31 December 2004, whichever occurs earlier."(rr )
