Hai dạng câu hỏi trên là hoàn toàn khác nhau vì
“TRUE/FALSE/NOT GIVEN” hỏi về thông tin thực tế (FACTS) và
“YES/ NO/ NOT GIVEN” lại hỏi về ý kiến cá nhân (OPINIONS) Thí
sinh cần biết phân biệt giữa thực tế (facts) với ý kiến cá nhân (opinions)
để tránh sai sót dẫn đến mất điểm
Thực tế cho thấy nhiều thí sinh làm bài thi Đọc hiểu IELTS phần
“TRUE/FALSE/NOT GIVEN” và “YES/ NO/ NOT GIVEN” thường bị
mất nhiều điểm phần này và nhiều khi tra đáp án vẫn không hiểu tại sao
mình sai vì thấy thông tin khớp giữa câu hỏi và nội dung trong bài hoặc
có thông tin đầy đủ hoặc tương đương sao lại “not given” Thực ra, thí
sinh đó đã mắc “bẫy” của người ra đề Nguyên nhân là do thí sinh đã
nhầm lẫn hoặc không phân biệt giữa FACT (Thực tế) với OPINION (Ý
kiến cá nhân) Phần “TRUE/FALSE/NOT GIVEN” đưa ra câu hỏi kiểm
tra khả năng hiểu về một thông tin THỰC TẾ nào đó ở trong bài viết
nhưng trong bài lại nêu ý kiến cá nhân của tác giả hoặc một ai đó thì dù
thông tin trùng khớp nhưng thí sinh chọn “NOT GIVEN” mới đúng
Ngoài ra, cả hai dạng bài trên khi giữa thông tin giữa câu hỏi và trong nội
dung bài đọc đều là FACTS hoặc đều là OPINIONS nhưng thông tin
trong bài đọc không có, không có đầy đủ, hoặc không khớp hoàn toàn với
câu hỏi thì vẫn phải chọn “NOT GIVEN” Chỉ chọn FALSE hoặc NO khi
thông tin giữa câu hỏi và trong bài đọc phủ nhận nhau hoặc mâu thuẫn
với nhau và đều là cùng dạng (cùng là FACTS hoặc cùng OPINIONS)
Chỉ chọn “TRUE” hoặc “YES” khi giữa câu hỏi và thông tin trong bài
cùng dạng (cùng là FACTS hoặc cùng là OPINIONS) và hoàn toàn trùng
khớp hoặc tương đương với nhau

thập tài liệu và thông tin phục vụ cho các bài thuyết trình, báo cáo, bài tập
lớn, dự án nghiên cứu và luận văn tốt nghiệp, sinh viên không được nhầm
lẫn giữa thực tế với ý kiến cá nhân đảm bảo sự chính xác về thông tin họ
thu thập và đề cập đến trong bài viết của mình
Trang 4B KHÁI NIỆM VỀ “FACT” VÀ “OPINION”
a Fact là gì?
Theo E Morton thì “facts” (thực tế) có thể định nghĩa như sau:
“Facsts là những tuyên bố có thể ĐÚNG, cũng có thể SAI nhưng phải
có thể CHỨNG MINH được sự đúng và sai đó.”
Như vậy facts có thể là những quy luật, nguyên tắc, chân lý, lý
thuyết nếu đúng (là sự thật) thì ta chúng ta không thể nào tác động được,
không thay đổi được và không gây ra những ý kiến tranh cãi, thảo luận
trái chiều Nhưng facts cũng có thể quy luật, nguyên tắc, chân lý, lý
thuyết sai lầm và sau đó nó được chứng minh là sai Do đó, facts là sự
thật nhưng không phải lúc nào cũng đúng như nhiều người hiểu
Chúng ta hãy xem các ví dụ về facts sau đây:
1 Statistically, women live longer than men
2 Most buses weigh more than most cars
3 There are ten inches in a foot (false)
Cả ba câu trên đều là facts vì chúng đều có thể chứng minh được
sự đúng – sai của chúng Trong đó, câu thứ ba là fact nhưng là thực tế sai
nhưng dùng biện pháp đo đạc và thống kê ta vẫn có thể chứng minh đó là
tuyên bố sai
b Opinion là gì?
Cũng theo tác giả E Morton thì “opinion” (ý kiến cá nhân) có thể
định nghĩa như sau: “Opinions là những tuyên bố KHÔNG THỂ
CHỨNG MINH THỰC TẾ ĐƯỢC Đây cũng là những tuyên bố có
thể gây tranh cãi hay phản bác lại Ngoài ra, opinions có thể cần có
thực tế (facts) để chứng minh hay xác nhận ”
Ta xem các ví dụ sau:

Các câu trên đều là ý kiến cá nhân vì ta không có cơ sở khoa học nào để chứng minh chúng đúng đắn hoàn toàn Có thể, có ngwòi sẽ nói rằng theo tôi golf rất lý thú Có người không thích thì phản bác lại rằng bánh Pizza không ngon hoặc có người giỏi và yêu thích Toán sẽ không cho nó là môn khó nhất và cũng không có cách nào chứng minh Toán là khó nhất cả

C PHÂN BIỆT FACT VỚI OPINION NHƯ THẾ NÀO?
Phân biệt sự khác nhau giữa fact với opinion là một kỹ năng quan trọng nhưng đôi khi cũng rất khó để nhận ra sự khác nhau đó Một
nguyên nhân là trong ý nghĩ của rất nhiều người cho rằng đã là “facts (thực tế)” thì chỉ có đúng mà không có sai Có nghĩa là “fact” chỉ gắn liền với từ “true” và “correct” mặc dù vẫn tồn tại hai khái niệm “đúng về thực tế” (factually accurate) và “sai về thực tế” (factually inacurate )
Ví dụ khi đọc câu “there are 10,000 feet in a mile” (10,000 phít bằng 1 dặm) thì sẽ có người cho là nó không phải là fact vì nó sai nhưng
nó lại là fact vì có thể chứng minh là nó sai
Để hiểu rõ hơn, ta cũng phân tích 02 câu sau:
1 Mr Nam is 3 meters tall
2 Mr Nam is tall
Câu 1 là fact vì ta có thể chứng minh dễ dàng bằng đo đạc là nó sai thực tế Câu 2 lại là opinion vì lý do sau: nếu một người thấp hơn ông Nam có thể chấp nhận điều đó nhưng nếu một người cao hơn thì lại phản bác do vậy không có cách nào khẳng định được điều đó nên nó là
opinion
Do vậy, dù đúng hay sai nếu chứng minh và khẳng định được,
không bị phản bác thì đó là “fact” Ngược lại, nếu không thể chứng minh hay khẳng định được đúng hay sai, có thể bị phản bác thì đó là opinion
Ngoài ra, một đặc điểm nữa của opinion là opinion còn cần có sự xác
minh, chứng minh của thực tế Một nhận định, kết luận của ai đó đọc
qua có vẻ rất đúng nhưng vẫn là opinion vì nó cần có thực tế chứng minh
Do đó, khi đưa ra ý kiến, nhận xét, nhận định hay kết luận (opinion)
Trang 7người ta thường đưa ra thực tế (facts) để chứng minh cho nó đúng và thuyết phục người nghe, đọc
Chúng ta xem xét câu sau: “Drinking orange juice after brushing your teeth tastes bad," Có người sẽ cho rằng đây là fact Nhưng nếu được yêu cầu chứng minh thì sẽ có người nói bản thân người đó đã thử và thấy đúng như vậy Nhưng đây chỉ là kinh nghiệm cá nhân (personal
experience) Nhưng cũng có người đề nghị là nên mời một số người cùng làm thí nghiệm để xác minh nhưng không thể chứng minh hoàn toàn nhận định trên một cách tuyệt đối (vì có thể có người nhận định khác) để nó trở thành fact được nên nó vẫn chỉ là opinion
Do vậy, opinion là những tuyên bố không thể chứng minh
