I’m Molly Wood from the New York Times and I have with me, arguably, the four best camera phones in the US market but not one of them has a frontfacing camera better than 2.1 megapixels. So I decided to take all four out and test them to see which can produce the best selfie…and what’s better location than New York City’s Time Square? First up, the iPhone 5s: now the frontfacing camera on this phone is just 1.2 megapixels, which is basically nothing, but megapixels aren’t everything. The sensor and the optics make a big difference in how the camera actually performs. Now this is the Nokia Lumia 1020 – arguably the best camera phone in the world. This honker on the back is 41 megapixels…but the front facing camera is just 1.2.

camera which is getting better!

Although generally I’ve been

disappointed with S4 pictures so we’ll

see

I have high hopes

So I’ve spent some time scrolling

through my selfies and I have to say

the big surprise here is that I’m not

very impressed with the iPhone

front-facing camera It’s such a good rear

camera but the selfies, overall…very

inconsistent I think the best performer

here is the HTC-1: consistently good

color, good focus, and just nice photos

overall Followed, I think, by the

Nokia Lumia 1020

Right now the reason that most of

these phones only have one good

camera is size You can see what

happens when you put a big,

high-megapixel camera with a lot of

sensors and optics in it – gets a lot

fatter But phones are getting bigger

and I think I would rather have a

better selfie-cam than some super

skinny phones that makes me look

bad
