Trang 6Calibre is an open source e-bookmanagement tool Simply put, calibreallows you to organize your e-booklibrary, convert e-books to variousformats, and interact with your e-bookreader, all in an intuitive and friendlymanner It is compatible with MicrosoftWindows – XP, Vista, 7, and 8 – as well
as Apple’s OS X (and various flavors ofLinux) It was created by Kovid Goyal, who still leads its development Anumber of people around the world, including myself, contribute to calibre’sdevelopment Throughout this guide and
Trang 7the online docs you will see ‘calibre’instead of ‘Calibre’ That’s theconvention Kovid chose, so that’s what
we use
The purpose of calibre is to simplifymanagement of your e-book library Itdoes this in several ways:
Calibre organizes your library as adatabase so you can find the bookyou want when you want it Calibreeasily handles any size of library, and can manipulate e-bookmetadata – title, author, rating, etc Calibre converts between multiplee-book formats
Calibre supports a growing number
Trang 8of e-book readers, includingKindle, Kobo, Nook, and manyothers.
Calibre is composed of three functionalgroups:
The graphical user interface (GUI).This is the typical mode ofinteracting with your library All ofcalibre’s principal functionality isavailable through the GUI
A collection of command line (CLI)utilities for advanced calibreoperations For example, thecommand line tools are used by the
ManyBooks service to convert on
an as-needed basis
Trang 9Additional GUI tools such as an book reader and an e-book editor. These tools can be accessed via themain GUI or directly.
Trang 10e-Installing calibre
The installation processes starts by
downloading the installer for youroperating system Run the installer; when
it finishes, launch calibre You will begreeted with a welcome wizard, thatwill help you initially configure calibre. The first page of the wizard allows you
to choose the storage location for your book library
e-If this is your first time using calibre, thestorage location should not be anexisting e-book collection, but a newempty directory for calibre’s exclusiveuse Calibre manages the e-books you
Trang 11give it in its own way Think of thestorage location as a black box Youdon’t do anything with it – calibremanages the storage location for you Ifyou have used calibre in the past and areinstalling a new version, or if you havemoved your library, then it’s okay toindicate a directory with an existingcalibre library calibre is smart enough
to know to use an existing library when
it sees one
Click ‘next’ in the welcome wizard to bepresented with an e-book readerselection If your device is not listed, or
if you intend to use more than one book reader, don’t panic – just use thedefault ‘Generic’ choice This selection
Trang 12e-provides some conversion optimizationfor formats requiring fixed sizes Click
‘next’ and then ‘finish’
Congratulations, you’ve successfullyinstalled and configured calibre! If atany time you want to run the welcomewizard again, click the downward facingarrow to the right of the Preferencesbutton (looks like a set of three gears) inthe top tool bar, then select ‘Runwelcome wizard’
Trang 13The Main Library Window, aka the
GUI
Once the welcome wizard finishes youwill be presented with the mainapplication window There are a fewcomponents I would like to bring to yourattention The central piece is the booklist This takes up the majority of thewindow and displays the books in atable Just above the book list you willsee the search area (more on this later)and above that, the tool bar When you
Trang 14connect a supported e-book reader a
‘Device’ icon will appear next to the
’Library’ icon in the tool bar You canswitch between viewing books in yourlibrary and books on your e-book reader
by clicking on their respective icons
The panel along the right of the windowshows details about the currentlyselected book, including its cover If youdouble click anywhere in the detail area(including on the book cover) anotherwindow will open exposing moreinformation about the book Clicking onany blue text in this area will perform anaction specific to the information Forexample, clicking the author’s name willopen your web browser and search
Trang 15Wikipedia for information about theauthor.
At the bottom right of the window thereare four icons and the word “Jobs”.Clicking any of these icons will toggle agiven view state in the GUI From left toright:
The luggage tag toggles the tagbrowser (on the left of thewindow) More on this later
The curved arrow toggles the coverflow display Cover flow displaysthe book covers in a fashion similar
to how a juke box lays out albums. The selected book is in the centerwhile the neighboring covers are
Trang 16shown at an angle You cannavigate though the book coverswith the left and right arrow keys
on your keyboard The book listwill still be visible under the coverflow area
The nine squares in a grid togglescover grid view The cover gridreplaces the book list with a grid ofbook covers You might want tothink of this as bookshelf view. The book toggles seeing the detailspanel on the right
The jobs indicator is one of themost important pieces of the GUI.This is the word ‘Jobs:’, thenumber next to it and the circularprogress indicator Whenever
Trang 17calibre is working on something(conversion, sending books to thereader, downloading news, etc.) thecircular icon will spin and thenumber will reflect the number ofjobs (activities) calibre is working
on You can click any part of thejobs indicator to show more detailabout the jobs in progress

Trang 19Task 1: Organizing
The first part of organizing is gettingyour e-books into calibre’s library.Click the ‘Add books’ button in the toolbar at the top of the window, then selectthe e-books you would like calibre toimport When calibre imports your e-books it makes a copy of them in thestorage location you specified duringinitial setup Once you’ve added an e-book, calibre doesn’t need furtheraccess to the original file
During an e-book import, calibre tries toread the metadata from the e-book.Metadata is information about the book
Trang 20that is stored within the e-book itself.Different formats support differentinformation Often the information isincomplete or just plain wrong Don’tworry – calibre makes it easy to fix this.Select the book whose metadata youwant to change by clicking the book title
in the main window Then click ‘Editmetadata’ on the top tool bar (to the right
of the ‘Add books’ button) and themetadata editor will open
The easy way to correct the metadata is
to fill in the title and author, then clickthe ‘Download metadata’ button at thebottom, center of the Edit Metadatadialog Calibre will display possiblematches for the information entered If
Trang 21there is more than one result select theentry that looks like the best match A lot
of information should be filled in now
Above the ‘Download metadata’ buttonand to the top, right of the cover image isthe ‘Download cover’ button If the bookdoesn’t have a cover showing or if youdon’t like the cover, click it to try tohave calibre download one from theinternet
Now that you have your e-books incalibre there are a few different ways tofind specific e-books in your library.Direct Searching is one of the fastestways Above the book list there is aSearch field Think of it like having
Trang 22Google built into calibre Just type a fewkey words into the Search field Try theauthor, title, series, or anything else fromthe e-book’s metadata E-books matchingyour search terms are shown as filteredresults The other e-books are still inyour library, but they won’t be shown ifthe search expression doesn’t find them.
You can also use the tag browser tosearch your library Along the left side
of the window is the tag browser If youdon’t see anything to the left of the booklist, click the luggage tag icon in thelower right of the main window; a listwill appear to the left of the library Itallows you to see specific subsets ofyour library Clicking the icon to the left
Trang 23of each tag allows you to display just thee-books matching that criteria A plussearches for all books that match and aminus searches for all books that don’tmatch Notice that as you enable items inthe tag browser search queries areadded to the Search field The tagbrowser is really just an easy way tocreate search queries You could type thequery directly into the Search field andsee the same result.
Trang 24Task 2: Conversion
This is arguably the most useful, andmost complex, feature calibre offers.Three of the most popular e-bookreaders today are the Amazon Kindle, the Kobo and the Barnes & Noble Nook.Unfortunately, not all of these devicesread the same kinds of e-books Thismess is like the one in the music worldwhere you might find such formats asWMA, MP3 and AAC In e-books, thesame confusion exists—the Tower ofeBabel, as some call it
2.1: Background
Trang 25If you are only buying e-books from thestore associated with your reader—forexample, Amazon’s Kindle Store orKobo’s Store—you don’t need to worryabout any of this But there are verygood reasons why you should knowabout the major formats, what formatsyour reader supports, and how toconvert between formats.
In addition to the big e-books stores, many online sites offer e-books.Everything from public domain works tonovels (often offered at no charge) bywell known and lesser known authors. The ‘Get books’ icon in the toolbarallows you to easily comparison shopvia a store search dialog This allows
Trang 26you to search many different stores(uncheck or check the stores you want it
to use on the left), big and small, at once
It not only helps you find the best pricebut also the right format for the bookyou’re looking for Please note that thisfeature connects you to a third party, thestore, so any issues related to a purchaseshould be directed to the store itselfbecause calibre is not part of thisexchange
Often you can download e-books in avariety of formats, but you won’t alwaysfind them in a format your e-book readersupports Here is where conversioncomes in There is a very good chancethat you will be able to take an e-book
Trang 27and convert it to a format your readersupports Realize that you can’t converte-books that use Digital RightsManagement (DRM).
In the rest of the conversion section Iwill focus on three devices 1) TheAmazon Kindle which supports theAZW3 format 2) The Kobo, whichsupports the EPUB format 3) TheBarnes & Noble Nook, which alsosupports the EPUB format While boththe Kobo and Nook use the EPUBformat, books purchased from one storemay not be readable on another devicedue to DRM
2.2: Why are there different
Trang 28e-book formats?
Advances in technology is one reasonwhy so many different e-book formatsexist In fact, it’s a major reason Justlike the transition from VHS to DVD andnow to Blu-Ray, older formats whichwere created to solve the problemsfaced at that time are replaced withnewer formats that better meet the needs
of today A great example of this is the books people read back in the ’90s ontheir PDAs Those devices were verylimited in what they could display E-book readers today are much moreadvanced They can display largeimages and handle advanced formatting. These newer devices needed updated
Trang 29e-formats that could provide thesefeatures.
E-book formats are constantly evolving. While new formats aren’t introducedvery often, existing formats (like EPUB)are constantly being updated Forexample, the transition from EPUB 2 toEPUB 3 One big change that comes withEPUB 3 is the ability for EPUB tosupport audio and video Whilesupporting audio and video might seem
counter intuitive for an e-book, it make
sense when you think about e-books asrich media Coupled with a tablet orphone, audio and video can work verywell and greatly enhance the readersexperience
Trang 30Another major reason for theproliferation of e-book formats isexclusivity Many vendors like to controltheir own proprietary format so they arenot dependent on outside companies. They also have the benefit of being able
to license their format for use by others. Finally, controlling the format allowsthem to lock users into their platform E-books, being relatively new, areundergoing the same growing pains thatBetamax and VHS or HD-DVD and Blu-Ray went though The EPUB format, from the International Digital PublishingForum (IDPF), is an industry standardintended to reduce these problems
2.3: Conversion basics
Trang 31The first thing you need to do is find outwhat formats your e-book readersupports The Kindle supports AZW3,MOBI, PRC, AZW1, TPZ, PDF andTXT The Kobo supports EPUB, PDF,MOBI, RTF, CBZ, CBR, and TXT TheNook supports EPUB, and PDF Don’tlet this scare or confuse you; all of themajor e-book readers support multipleformats Even with this jumble of letters, you only need to worry about thepreferred format for the e-book reader. This preferred format is the one thatgives the best formatting As I mentionedearlier for the Kindle, you really onlyneed to worry about AZW3 For theKobo and Nook you only need to worryabout EPUB However, it is a good idea
Trang 32to be aware of all of the supportedformats because it wouldn’t make sense
to convert a MOBI to AZW3 for reading
on your Kindle because the Kindle canalready read MOBI Conversion is onlynecessary to fill in the gaps Forexample, if you want to read an EPUB
on your Kindle you can convert theEPUB to AZW3
2.4 Auto conversion
Auto converting e-books with calibre issimple and straightforward:
1 Open Calibre and select the e-book
to convert in the library list
2 Connect your e-book reader to your
