First of all, if you are a new or expecting mom, congratulations and bestwishes This is a very special time for you, a time you will always cherish.When I first found out that I was pregnant with my now 1 year-old twins, Shane and Katie, I felt really excited and blessed to be hav-ing two babies and could hardly wait for their arrival Also at the timebeing the mother of a 2 year-old, Kayla, I realized from experiencethat there could be a significant financial strain when a new child entersthe family

So as the expectant mother of twins, I was desperate to get someﬁnancial help for my family, especially after being taken aback by arecent article I had read in a parenting magazine This article plainlystated the staggering costs involved in raising a child I was astonished

to learn that the average parent will probably spend more than $1,500

on premium disposable diapers by the time a child is potty-trained Withtwins on the way, I did some quick calculations in my head, multipliedthose ﬁgures by two, took a deep breath, and realized that, yes, we reallydid need some extra help

After carefully going over the family budget with my husband anddeciding on some general cutbacks (e.g., pay-TV, the TV Guide, sub-

scriptions to those glossy women’s magazines that I just loved to read,book club memberships, and just about everything else we could thinkof), we still came up short

I subsequently sat down and tried to think of ways to get a little morehelp for my family I spent several hours surﬁng the Internet, readingthrough parenting magazines and parenting guides, visiting localdepartment stores, as well as making several calls to different compa-nies that offered baby products to ﬁnd out what kind of help was outthere for new or expecting moms

Many hours and several phone calls later, I was truly surprised to ﬁndthat so many companies offered free products or samples to new orexpecting moms who contacted them by simply making a toll-free phonecall, writing a letter, or applying online—and with no obligation to buyanything! These companies were eager to respond to my requests for freesamples and promotional products, and in a couple of weeks my mailboxwas ﬂooded with valuable free stuff I could hardly wait to see what mymailman brought me in the mail each day I received free gift packs, par-enting starter kits, coupons, parenting books and magazines, and tons ofsamples in the mail I got samples of almost every brand of diaper andformula on the market, plus I received many free gift items for my babies,including baby bibs, bottles, rattles, and much, much more (One yearlater I am still receiving free promotional items in the mail!)
