Ability to shine forever

Before 19th century, people believed that the sun was

composed of some special material that had a ability

to shine forever.

Trang 6

Hermann Helmholtz

Hermann Helmholtz asserted that it was the mass of the Sun itself that provided the gravitational energy to

heat it up

Trang 7

Arthur Stanley Eddington

In 1926 Arthur Stanley Eddington asserted that the sun was converted hydrogen into helium in a process which he called the “transmutation

of elements”

Working principle

 When photons strike a photovoltaic cell, they may be reflected, pass right through, or be absorbed.  Only the absorbed photons provide energy to generate electricity.  When enough sunlight (energy) is absorbed by the material (a semiconductor), electrons are dislodged from the material's atoms.

 An electron imbalance is created between the front and back When the two surfaces are joined by a connector, like a wire, a current of electricity occurs between the negative and positive sides

Some types of solar cell

At present the world are using three types of solar cells: solar panels crystal (monocrystal, c-Si), multi-crystal (polycrystal, p-Si) and amorphous thin film

(amorphous a-Si)

 Pin p-Si: 850 – 960 kwh / kwp,

Silicon solar cell

 N - type semiconductor layer: This semiconductor

is usually made from arsenic-miscellaneous silicon.

 P - type semiconductor layer: This semiconductor is usually made from boron-miscellaneous silicon.

 When the p-type layer contact with n-type layer, at the contacting domain, that we usually call p-n junction or space, there appears a contacting electric field direct from n-type layer to p-type layer Reason for the appearance

B-of this field is the diffusion B-of charge carriers (electrons from n-type layer to p-type layer and vice versa In the p-n junction, there are no charge carriers, so it is a neutral region.

 When photons in sunlight hit the solar panel, they are absorbed by semiconducting materials Photons will “attack” atoms of semiconductor which lie at the p-n junction This attack causes an effect called “internal photoelectric effect”, therefore in the p-n junction, the charge carriers are created Immediately these charge carriers are affected

by the contacting electric field and move to the electrodes.
