They hurried past Manfred, not daring tolook at one another, but when they reachedthe end of the hall, Manfred called, "I'mwatching you, Charlie Bone, so don't get anysilly ideas."
"No, sir," Charlie mumbled

Trang 3In the dormitory Fidelio behaved as if ing unusual was about to take place, thoughBilly wore a continual frown and seemedvery distracted.
noth-When Charlie finally lay down in bed he felt356
as though a coiled spring, deep inside him, might suddenly unravel How could he pos-sibly lie still until two o'clock? He wanted tobegin Asa's rescue right now, before he losthis nerve
Sometime between eleven o'clock and night, Charlie fell asleep, exhausted by hisown imagination He had been picturing somany different versions of Asa's rescue, hismind had finally demanded a rest
mid-Charlie woke up to find someone gentlyshaking his arm
"Charlie It's two o'clock," whispered Fidelio
Trang 4Charlie sat up, rubbing his eyes "I didn'teven hear my watch."
"I thought you might not Charlie, Dagbert'snot in his bed I don't know when he left theroom."
Charlie rolled out of bed "Can't worry aboutthat now," he whispered "I'd better wakeBilly." He pulled on his blue cape while hefound his shoes with his feet
A gentle tap on the head brought Billyscrambling out from under the covers
Trang 5There was a long silence, and then Billyreached for his glasses Swinging his feet tothe floor, he struggled into his cape andshoes Charlie grabbed his arm and word-lessly they crossed the dormitory.
"Good luck!" Fidelio's whisper was so soft,Charlie never heard him
Out in the dimly lit hallway, Charlie couldsee Billy's huge, terrified eyes, and he feltguilty "I'm sorry, Billy Please don't bescared I wouldn't ask you to do this, butyou're the only person who can talk to Asa."358
Trang 6"Not Asa, the Wilderness Wolf," said Billy.
"And I'm only scared of not being able to dothe right thing."
"You will do the right thing Come on."Charlie began to creep briskly down the hall. The only sounds in the vast, sleeping build-ing were the soft patterings of their feet onthe oak floorboards The great, silent empti-ness made Charlie feel as though he and Billywere the only beings alive And yet heknewthat, somewhere in the darkness, Dag-bert Endless and Manfred Bloor were awake, and waiting
But no one appeared as they hurried out ofthe dorm, no one followed them down thenarrow hall to the theater, and no one barredtheir way onto the stage The dark in thetheater was so absolute, Charlie had to pullout his flashlight
"Where do we go now?" Billy whispered
Trang 7Charlie shone his flashlight across the back
of the stage until he saw the trapdoor
"There!" he said
"It'll be very dark," Billy said nervously
"Very," Charlie agreed "But this flashlight ispretty good." He beamed it along the hem ofthe velvet

curtains, half expecting to see Manfred ing in one of the deep folds But no one wasthere He tiptoed over to the trapdoor and, looking furtively over his shoulder, lifted thedoor by its iron ring
hid-"It wasn't locked," Billy observed
"Never is," said Charlie
"But it could be," said Billy "There's a lock on that ring beside the opening.Someone could shut the door and lock us in."Charlie glanced at the rusty-looking padlock
pad-"It's old, Billy No one's used it for years
Trang 8There probably isn't even a key to fit it Andlook, it's closed No one could open that.Come on."
Lowering the trapdoor onto the floor, Charliebegan to descend the wooden steps Billygave the padlock an anxious glance "Do Ishut the trapdoor after me?"
"You'd better," called Charlie He reached thefoot of the steps and switched on the light.Billy climbed in and pulled the trapdoor overhis head "I've never been in here," he saidwhen he was standing in the room full ofcupboards and trunks
360
"It's the costume department." A thoughtcame to Charlie "We'd better find someclothes for Asa, for when he's a boy again."
"IF he's ever a boy again," muttered Billy.Charlie opened the first trunk He took out athick tweed coat and put it on beneath his
Trang 9cape Billy found a blue beret in one of thecupboards and a pair of green corduroys inanother trunk He pulled the beret over hishead, and tied the trousers around his neck.Charlie pounced on some thick-soled brownboots that he liked the look of, wondering if
he could do a swap with Asa later on He tiedthe laces together and hung them around hisneck
"Should we turn the light off?" asked Billy, asCharlie headed for the dark recess behind arow of pillars
Charlie hesitated "No We'll have to comeback this way, when we've gotten Asa to theriverbank."
"IF we find Asa," Billy said quietly
Once he was behind the pillars, Charlietrained his flashlight on the dark, mildewywall At the very end, a low, arched entrancewas revealed At that
Trang 10Slipping cautiously through the arch, theyfound themselves in a narrow tunnel Thelow ceiling, walls, and floor were built en-tirely of dark redbrick, broken in places andglistening with slime After a few meters thetunnel dipped sharply, so sharply that theboys began to slip on the damp bricks.
"Help!" wailed Billy
Charlie lost his balance and, as he slid to theground, he clutched wildly at the wall Theflashlight flew out of his grasp He could hear
it rolling along the ground and then itstopped Seconds later there was a distant, dull thud
Trang 11"Sounds like it fell into a pit," said Billy in ashaky voice.
"It could have been us," muttered Charlie
"My flashlight is done for, that's for sure."And yet they weren't plunged into utterdarkness;
Trang 12Billy crawled up to Charlie and peered down.
"It's an abyss!" he cried "We'll never reachthe bottom Maybe it goes to the center ofthe earth?"
"Of course it doesn't." Charlie tried to soundcalm, but he couldn't keep a slight tremorout of his voice
And then they heard it: a distant animalmoan It was so infinitely sad, Charlie foundhimself swinging his feet onto the ladderwithout a second thought

THE RED KNIGHT
If the moth hadn't been with them, Charliehad no doubt that he and Billy would havefallen to their deaths The rungs in the ladderwere worn and rusty; several were missingaltogether Without a light to guide themthey would surely have slipped, and it was along, long, long way down
Trang 13But at last they stood on firm ground again.
At the bottom of the pit the walls were linedwith huge rocks and boulders, and there, huddled in the shadows, was a scrawny, graycreature
"Asa?" said Charlie softly
The beast turned its head Its yellow eyesflashed fearfully in the unfamiliar light, and
it gave a low, rumbling growl
"What's he saying, Billy?" asked Charlie.Billy clutched his forehead "I don't know."
"You must know."
Trang 14re-can't talk to him either?" he askeddesperately.
"Don't think so," said Billy, keeping his eyes
on the gray creature
There was a sudden roar, and with baredteeth, the beast lunged at them
"Asa!" cried Charlie "Don't you know me?"There came a low, grumbling growl Charlieand Billy backed against the wall
"Try, Billy, try." Charlie closed his eyes inpanic
Billy's response was to fling the beret intothe middle of the floor The creature snarledand sprang closer Billy threw the trousersafter the beret The beast sniffed them, raised its head, and howled
"I think that means he doesn't like them,"said Billy
"Beggars can't be choosers," mutteredCharlie "If
Trang 15he doesn't like these boots I'll eat my hood."Anxious not to anger the creature, he threwthe boots lightly to one side
The beast trotted over to them As it pawedthe shiny boots, Charlie could see how ema-ciated it was Every rib showed beneath itssparse gray coat There hardly seemed anounce of flesh on its whole body
"Poor thing," said Charlie softly
"I've remembered the sound for boots," saidBilly in an excited whisper He gave a lightlittle grunt
The beast looked up It gave a short bark
"Good," said Billy "He said 'good "
"Can you remember any more sounds?"asked Charlie
"Like what?"
"Well, can you tell him we've come to rescuehim, and that he must put the clothes on
Trang 16quickly, before we look for the tunnel to theriver?"
"Charlie, he can't put them on, he's a wolf,"said Billy "How can a wolf put boots on?"366
Charlie felt very stupid "He can't," he saidglumly "He needs more light to change into
a boy."
Billy gasped "I forgot I keep forgettingthings, but look!" Billy put his hand in hispajamas pocket and brought out a candle Itimmediately burst into flame "Myguardian's magic candle," Billy said happily
"I always keep it with me."
"Of course!" Charlie grinned with relief "Iforgot about it, too I think it'll do the trick,Billy Hold it higher."
With light from both the candle and themoth, the pit became almost as bright as day
Trang 17The moth had been sitting at the top of thetallest boulder, but now V-
she began to fly closer to the beast Shefluttered between its ears and it snapped ather as a thin veil of sparks lit its shaggy head. She perched briefly on its back, sending abright glow down its spine The beastwhirled around, growling and grumbling.Undeterred, the little moth swooped over thethin tail, and then, unbelievably, she spunaround the beast's legs until each one was agleaming rod of light The beast lifted
Trang 18sallow, human cheeks formed around a thinmouth; and bony shoulders appearedthrough the sparse gray hair With a suddencry that could have been a howl of protest or
of joy, the beast turned its back and huncheditself on the earth
It was several seconds before Charlie realized
he was staring at the thin back of a real boy
He walked toward it and, pulling the tweedcoat from under his cape, gently covered theboy
A sob echoed around the pit Charlie sank tohis knees beside Asa and said, "It's OK, Asa.We've come to help you."
Billy brought the green trousers and theboots closer The moth had retreated to herhigh boulder

again She seemed to be waiting Slowly, Asagot to his feet With his back toward them,
Trang 19he pulled on the green trousers and theboots When he had shrugged himself intothe coat, he turned to face Charlie and Billywith a wan smile.
"Asa! You're you again," said Charlie
"Yes," Asa croaked He coughed "Sorry.Throat's dry Haven't spoken to anyone forweeks."
"We're going to get you out of here, but we'vegot to hurry There's a tunnel that leads tothe riverbank Someone's waiting to rescueyou Your mom will be there." Charlie wasspeaking so fast that Asa began to lookconfused
Charlie slowed down "My guess is that thetunnel begins behind one of those boulders."
"My mom's OK, then?" Asa murmured
"Yes." Charlie hesitated and said awkwardly,
"I'm sorry about your dad."
Trang 20Asa's face began to crumple and Billy saidquickly, "I bet it's behind that tall boulder, the one your moth's sitting on, Charlie I betthe tunnel begins there."
369
"Let's have a look." Charlie went over to theboulder and tried to shift it "It'll take allthree of us to move this," he said "Come on,you two."
Billy blew out his candle and put it back inhis pocket
After several minutes of heaving and ing, puffing and panting, they managed tomove the boulder a few inches away from thewall Billy was right There was indeed a hid-den entrance With renewed strength thethree boys pushed the heavy boulder anotherfew inches Now there was just enough spacefor them to squeeze into the entrance of thetunnel
Trang 21push-They moved in silence Billy first, then Asa.Charlie walked behind Asa, just in case hebegan to lose his shape again But the whitemoth fluttered close to the beast boy, makingsure there was enough light for him to keephis human form.
The tunnel was, if anything, more dank andsmelly than the first one It was certainlycolder Charlie and Billy pulled up theirhoods, and Asa, somewhat reluctantly, put
on the beret Charlie first noticed the water370
when Asa's feet began to splash, sending coldsprays at Charlie's legs
"Do you think the river might be coming intothe tunnel?" Billy asked nervously
"It can't be," answered Charlie "The path is along way above the river and besides, we'rewalking upward, not down."
"What if the river floods?" Billy persisted
Trang 22"It hasn't been raining," said Charlie Even as
he spoke he was remembering the high riverthat had nearly swept them off the bridge
Billy started to walk faster, but soon the ter was above his knees The current was sostrong he could hardly move against it
wa-"We're going to drown," he moaned
371
Asa slumped against the wall "It's me," hemuttered "Manfred will never let me go,he'd rather see me dead."
"It's Dagbert Endless," Charlie said bitterly
"We mustn't let him beat us We've got to
Trang 23keep moving." He walked past Asa andgrabbed Billy's hand "We'll help one anoth-
er Come on, Asa Take Billy's other hand."They began to move again, slowly and pain-fully, while the white moth hovered abovethem, the sparkle of her lively spirit encour-aging them onward But even she couldn'tstop the water rising, and it wasn't long be-fore the swirling torrent was gurgling aroundtheir waists Charlie had no idea how closethey were to the riverbank Perhaps the pathwas already underwater and as soon as theyemerged, they would be swept into a flood. When the water reached their shoulders,Charlie began to give up hope
Far above the tunnel, Tancred Torsson wasmaking his way across the grounds of Bloor'sAcademy He
