Trang 1"You always invite Billy home." Manfred puthis
Charlie felt an intense pain in the center of
his forehead Why is Manfred doing this? he wondered He doesn't have to hypnotize me.
I would have asked Billy home next end, anyway Having to resist Manfred's
week-gaze made Charlie angry It had happened
Trang 2before and Charlie had discovered that hecould block the hypnotist He had to lookbeyond the black glare and into the mind ofManfred Bloor.
Images swam before Charlie's eyes: a knight
in a green cloak; a stone troll; and, last of all, far, far out on a furious gray sea, the sail of atiny boat
116
"No!" cried Charlie The pain in his head creased He thought he could bear it nolonger He would have to let go
in-"You will ," came the words in-"You will "
"Will ?" Charlie murmured He felt his headsinking forward And then another image cutthrough the darkness in his head: a knight
on a white horse, red feathers streamingfrom his silver helmet, and a sword whoseblade flashed like a ray of the sun
Trang 3The dark figure on the other side of the tablebegan to sink Charlie heard a distant roar, and then the doors behind him opened, and
he was surrounded by moving, murmuringforms Charlie sat up and rubbed his eyes
"You OK, Charlie?" asked Tancred, takingthe seat beside him
"Yes," said Charlie confidently "I'm great."
He looked across at Manfred, who haddropped into a chair His head lolled forward
as though he were asleep
117
Dorcas and the twins clustered around thetalents master Joshua tapped his shoulderand Manfred lifted his head He clutched theedge of the table and pulled himself to hisfeet "Get started on your homework," hesaid His speech was thick and slurred.Avoiding Charlie's eye, Manfred limped out
of the room
Trang 4Dorcas, Joshua, and the twins took theirusual places opposite Charlie A few mo-ments later, Emma, Lysander, and Gabrielarrived and sat beside one another, beyondTancred Billy rushed in and headed straightfor the empty place on Charlie's right Thesmall boy seemed nervous and even moredisorganized than usual Books kept fallingout of his grasp, his glasses slipped off hisnose, and reaching for them, his chair tippedsideways and he fell onto the floor.
Charlie had no doubt that the Branko twinswere responsible They often tormented Billywith their kinetic powers He was an easyvictim Dorcas and Joshua began to snicker.118
"Pathetic!" Lysander glared at the twins "Isthat how you get your kicks? Tormentingpeople who can't defend themselves? Try it
Trang 5on me, Idith Come on, Inez, knock MY chairover."
The twins lowered their eyes and openedtheir books The ghostly African warriorsthat Lysander could call up were notsomething that they wanted to contest
Dagbert Endless came in late He sat alone, halfway between each group "Where's thetalents master?" he asked
"He got sick," said Dorcas, "when CharlieBone was with him."
"Is that so?" Dagbert looked at Charlie withinterest

CHAPTER 6
THE POISONED NET
T he long, cold dormitory with its single dimlight had become so familiar to Charlie that
he almost felt at home But tonight he found
it impossible to sleep On one side of him,
Trang 6Fidelio hummed in his dreams, and on theother, Billy Raven twisted and moaned in atangle of bed covers.
"Billy, are you awake?" Charlie whispered.Billy stopped moving and sat up "I'm wor-ried about Rembrandt," he said "Who's go-ing to look after him?"
"You heard Olivia She said Mrs Onimouswasn't injured She'll be back at the Pets'Cafe right now, I bet."
"But Mr Onimous? He he must be "Billy's voice trailed off
"We'll ask Cook about it in the morning,"said Charlie "She'll know." He closed hiseyes and turned over,
120
and then he found himself asking, "Do youwant to come home with me next weekend?"
"Of course I do," said Billy
"That's settled, then."
Trang 7Fidelio had drifted out of his musical dreamand slumbered peacefully Billy lay quiet andstill, at last, and Charlie should have found iteasy to sleep But another problem hadpresented itself.
Why was Manfred so eager for Billy to visitCharlie's home? Did it have something to dowith the painting of Badlock? Charlie real-ized he had told Billy nothing about thepainting Billy's concern for his rat had put itout of Charlie's mind
The soft light of his white moth flickeredabove Charlie, and he was glad she had fol-lowed him to school As he watched Claer-wen loop and swing through the darkness, hebegan to feel drowsy, but as he finally fellasleep, a voice in his head seemed to be
warning him: Don't let Billy go into Badlock.
Trang 8From a bed at the end of Charlie's row, bert Endless followed the white moth's danceacross the
Dag-121
ceiling He put his hand under his pillow andbrought out a small golden fish and five tinygolden crabs Clutching them in his fist, hemurmured, "Sea gold," and a smile crept intohis face
The bare walls of the dormitory were bathed
in blue-green colors, veined with rippling ver light As the watery shades washed abovehim, Dagbert thought of his mother She hadgiven him the sea-gold creatures a month be-fore her death She had found the gold inwrecks so deep they had been declaredforever lost But not to her For Dagbert'smother was a merwoman, as much at home
sil-in the sea as sil-in the castle her husband hadbuilt for her She made the gold into rings
Trang 9and bracelets and golden chains But the fivecrabs and the fish were special charms togive her gifted son a power that would ex-ceed his father's There was also a golden seaurchin somewhere in Tancred Torsson's pos-session The storm boy had stolen it to weak-
en Dagbert's power
When Dagbert was five years old, his motherhad been caught in a net and crushed todeath beneath a
Trang 10caught the moth, he would be helping self as well Tancred would surely return the
him-charm in exchange for Charlie's moth
Dor-cas Loom will make me a net She's clever with her fingers We'll soon see who's the strongest, thought Dagbert.
The following day Charlie found an tunity to tell Billy about Runner Bean
oppor-He watched Billy wander up to the top of thefield and began to follow him Billy oftenwandered up to the ruined castle in thewoods He felt safe behind the massive redstone walls, with the open sky for a roof andthe comforting sense that the Red King andhis queen might still be close
Trang 11down the center and bordered with freshearth When Charlie approached, Billy said,
"That is where Mrs Tilpin found the mirror, isn't it?"
Charlie looked at the stone "Yes Where theshadow buried it."
"D'you think she'll try to use it again to bringthe shadow back?"
"Yes, I do." Charlie sat beside Billy "There'ssomething you've got to know, Billy."
"Oh?" Billy's claret-colored eyes widenedwith anticipation "Have you been picture-traveling again?"
"How did you guess?"
"You look like you have I didn't notice fore; I was thinking about Rembrandt somuch I still haven't seen Cook."
be-"Your rat's going to be OK," said Charlie
"Look, Billy, you've got to know everythingthat happened
Trang 12last weekend, and I might not get anotherchance to tell you before Friday."
"I want to know," said Billy
So Charlie told Billy everything: from themoment he heard the wind sighing out of thepainting, to the appearance of Runner Bean
in Badlock Billy shuffled and gasped; hepulled his hood up and hunched himselfdown, as though he were trying to block outCharlie's words yet was desperate to hearmore When Charlie described how he hadescaped from the painting with Claerwen'shelp, Billy gave a sigh of relief and said,
"That's alright, then But you'd better not gonear that painting again, Charlie."
"It's not all right," said Charlie "I couldn'tget Runner Bean out He's stuck in that aw-ful place, and none of us knows how to "
"Can you see him?" asked Billy
Trang 13"Yes It's horrible He's howling."
"Maybe I can, kind of, connect with him,"Billy suggested
"He is," Charlie admitted "I don't think he'lltalk to me until I've rescued his dog."
Billy looked thoughtful "I can still comehome with you, Charlie, can't I? Even if Idon't look at the painting?"
"Of course you can."
As they left the ruins, Charlie's mothfluttered out of his pocket and settled on hisshoulder
Trang 14"We'll be OK if your moth's with us," Billysaid with a grin.
Charlie didn't reply Claerwen had saved himfrom Badlock, but she hadn't managed to dothe same for Runner Bean
When the sound of the horn blew across thegrounds,
126
the boys began to run back to the school.Neither of them saw Dagbert Endless mov-ing out of the trees, close to the castleentrance
Charlie's trumpet lesson always finishedearly Sehor Alvaro now taught all the brassband students and was generally very suc-cessful He was young and cheerful, with aninteresting mustache and smiling, almond-shaped eyes In Sehor Alvaro's opinion,Charlie could have played the trumpet toler-ably well, if he put his mind to it But the boy
Trang 15with riotous hair seemed unable toconcentrate.
Today Charlie was happy to be released tenminutes before lunch
"Do you think it eez possible you spare sometime to practice this week?" asked SehorAlvaro pleasantly
"Urn, yes, sir," said Charlie, who was alreadywondering how he could get a moment alonewith Cook
"Gracias," called Sehor Alvaro as Charlie
pounded down the hallway
127
Finding Cook was not as difficult as Charliehad imagined She was sitting at one of thetables in the blue cafeteria, having a cup oftea with a white-haired, robust-looking man:
Dr Saltweather
Trang 16"A bit early for lunch, aren't we, CharlieBone?" Dr Saltweather remarked.
"Shouldn't you still be in class?"
"Sehor Alvaro let me go; I hadn't practicedenough," Charlie confessed
Dr Saltweather sighed He was head of sic and felt responsible for Charlie's lack ofprogress Charlie's father was the cathedralorganist and a brilliant musician, but Charlieseemed to have inherited none of his father'stalent Dr Saltweather was aware ofCharlie's extraordinary endowment, however, and had a certain amount of sym-pathy for the boy
mu-"I wanted to ask Cook about Mr Onimous,"said Charlie
"Mr Onimous?" Cook's rosy face took on ananxious look "He's not too well, Charlie. He's in the hospital
128
Trang 17Concussion Poor Mrs Onimous is besideherself."
"And and the animals?" asked Charlie
"Well, the Flames can look after themselves,"Cook said confidently, "and you can tell Billythat his rat is quite safe He's with Mrs.Kettle."
"And the boa?" said Charlie
"Same place, Charlie The Kettle Shop."
Dr Saltweather stood up and pushed in hischair "I hear the Pets' Cafe has been closed,"
to-The music teacher's commanding tone gaveCharlie a surge of hope "D'you think Dr
Trang 18Saltweather can do something about thecafe?" he asked Cook.
"He'll certainly try But he'll be up againstsome pretty powerful people, and I wouldn'tlike him to put himself in danger." Cook car-ried the two
129
mugs to the counter and Charlie followedwith the teapot and two empty plates "Thereare certain people in this city who've beenjust waiting to finish off the Pets' Cafe." Cookwent on, "They don't like you children meet-ing up on the weekend and hatching plots."
"We don't hatch plots," Charlie saidindignantly
"No? Think about it, Charlie Oh, I knowyour plots are all for the best reasons, butthey don't like it."
"But the Pets' Cafe is a good place, Cook It's
a happy place Where else can pets meet and
Trang 19enjoy great food? It's not just useful to us;hundreds of people love it."
"You don't have to tell me, Charlie." Cook ted the lid from a pan of fish stew on thecounter and sniffed "I'd better check the kit-chen and see what my lunch ladies are upto."
lif-Charlie stood by the counter, patiently ing for someone to come and ladle out thestew Other music students began to arriveand by the time
Trang 20"Probably ate too much fish over the end," Gabriel remarked.
week-Charlie wouldn't have laughed so heartily if
he had known what Dagbert was up to Infact, he wouldn't have laughed at all
It wasn't until the end of homework thatCharlie began to miss his moth She oftendisappeared for a few hours; maybe she slept
in the folds of a curtain or nestled behind apicture frame Charlie never knew But in theevening she would usually flutter onto hisarm or his shoulder, as if she were reassuringhim that she was near, and then she wouldfly off again
131
This time, Claerwen's absence worriedCharlie As he left the King's room, he askedBilly if he had seen the moth
"Not since she was on your arm this ing," said Billy
Trang 21morn-Gabriel hadn't seen her, nor had Emma.
"She'll turn up," said Lysander "Probablyeating a spider somewhere."
"Or being eaten by a bat," said Tancred
Lysander dug him in the ribs "Cut it out,Tanc Charlie loves that moth."
Dagbert Endless passed them silently.Charlie noticed that he wore a slight smile.Had he been listening to their conversation?Dagbert didn't go straight to the dormitory, like the others He slipped down the mainstaircase and crossed the hall
Dr Saltweather chose that moment to leavethe staff room "Where do you think you'regoing, Dagbert Endless?" he demanded
132
"I've got to show the talents master somework," Dagbert said casually
"Be quick about it, then," said Dr
Saltweath-er "It'll be lights-out in fifteen minutes."
Trang 22"Yes, sir." Dagbert ran down the passage tohis classroom He went to a desk at the back
of the room and opened the lid Inside thedesk lay something resembling a fine whitehandkerchief Dorcas had done her workwell On Dagbert's instructions, she had gone
to the sewing room during lunch and hadquickly woven a nice little net It was made
of the finest muslin and fixed to a long boo cane, helpfully provided by Weedon.Just to make sure the net would do whatDagbert intended, Dorcas had dipped themuslin in the juice of a rare herb: still-wort.She had never used the herb before and wasinterested to see if it would work
bam-It had worked very well The moth inside thenet lay so still it appeared to be dead
"Did you catch it?" Dorcas peered around thedoor
132
Trang 23"It's not dead, then," said Dorcas, pointment clouding her plump face.
disap-"It will be soon," Dagbert told her He laidthe net on his desk and went to the supplycabinet, where Mr Carp, the English teacher, kept a thick glass jar
Dagbert brought the jar over to his desk andeased the opening of the net around the top
of the glass The white moth fell in
"There," said Dagbert "Now I'll take it toManfred."
Trang 24"You will tell him I helped, won't you?" saidDorcas "I mean, I did make the net and thepoison and everything."
"Of course I'll tell him, Dorc You're a genius, you know that?"
134
"Yes, I do." A smile dimpled her cheeks
Dagbert covered the jar with the muslin andcarried it to the door Dorcas rushed to open
it for Dagbert, who sailed through with amuttered "Thanks" and continued across thehall Dorcas flew ahead of him and openedthe small, ancient door that led to the westwing
"You will tell him, won't you?" begged cas again,
Dor-"I said I would," Dagbert replied, steppinginto the dark passage behind the door "Bet-ter get to bed, Dorc, or Matron'll come down
on you."
Trang 25"And Manfred will tell Fairy Tilpin about me,won't he?" Dorcas went on "She'll be sopleased."
"YES!" Dagbert gave the door a backwardkick and it slammed in Dorcas's face
Students seldom went to the west wing Itwas home to the Bloor family, and theydidn't like staff or children intruding At thefar end of the hall, a dim light could be seen
in the room at the base of the music tower.Dagbert made his way toward the light
135
The walls on either side of him gave off thedamp, earthy smell of old brick, and mossgrew in the cracked slate floor
Halfway down the passage, a bookcase stood
in a small recess Holding the jar tightagainst his body with his left hand, Dagbertused his right to remove two books from a
Trang 26shelf He knocked on the bare wood behindthem.
"Who is it?" called a voice
"Dagbert, sir I've got something to showyou."
"Oh, yes," said Manfred in a bored voice
"I hope it's THE moth, Dagbert Endless."Manfred beckoned Dagbert over "I'm ex-tremely busy, as you can see."
136
"It is the right moth, sir." Dagbert turned thejar over in his hands and laid it upside down
Trang 27before Manfred Now the moth's wings werebarely distinguishable from the white muslinbeneath her.
Manfred peered through the thick glass
"You're sure?"
"See the silver on its wings? I know it'sCharlie's I caught it in the hallway of por-traits Thought it was so clever lying on abunch of painted white lilies Thought itwouldn't be seen." Dagbert wrinkled hisnose "Funny-looking person in thatportrait."
Manfred gave him an icy look "The person
in that portrait was my grandmother, Donatella, a very brave wo-man She was accidentally electrocuted in anexperiment."
great-great-great-"Sorry," said Dagbert
"Did anyone help you to do this?" Manfredtapped the jar
Trang 28"No, sir." Dagbert felt Manfred's black eyesboring into his, and he had to steady himselfagainst
"About the moth," said Dagbert "I know youwant it so Charlie Bone can't travel safely, but I didn't catch it just for that."
"No?" Manfred looked at the trapped moth
"No, I want to bargain with it TancredTorsson stole my sea urchin, and without it Ican't can't "
"Drown people?" Manfred suggested
"Not exactly." Dagbert frowned "I'm just notmyself without all my sea-gold creatures."
