A sentence is a group of words which expresses a complete thought. A sentence must contain a subject and a verb  (although one may be implied). . A declarative sentence. A declarative sentences make statements or assertions . For example: I shall arrive at there . We must not forget that date .

What Is a Sentence?

A sentence is a group of words which

expresses a complete thought

A sentence must contain a subject and a 

verb  (although one may be implied).

The Four Types of Sentence

1 A declarative sentence.

A declarative sentences make statements

or

assertions

For example:

 I shall arrive at there

 We must not forget that date

2.An imperative sentence.

An imperative sentence gives

orders ,makes requests and usually has no overt subject

For example:

 Come here.

 Don’t walk on the grass.

3 An interrogative sentence.

An interrogative sentence asks a question and ends with a question mark.

For example:

 Did you see your brother yesterday?

 When did he arrive ?

 Can you sing ?

4.An exclamatory sentence  

An exclamatory sentence expresses

excitement or emotion It ends with an exclamation mark.

For example:

 What a beautiful girl !

 He is going to win !

The Four Sentence Structures

A sentence can consist of a single clause or several clauses When a sentence is a single clause, it is called a simple sentence (and the

clause is called an independent clause) A

sentence must contain at least one

independent clause

Below are the four types of sentence

structure :

1.A Simple Sentence.

A simple sentence has just one independent clause.

For example:

Water boils at 100 centigrade

You must not say such things

2.A Compound Sentence. 

A compound sentence has at least two

independent clauses

For example:

 He ran out and he fell over the suitcase

 She arrived at nine ,went up to her room ,and did not come down until noon

3 A Complex Sentence.

 A complex sentence consists of one simple

sentence and one or more subordinate (or

dependent clause )

For example:

was the eldest child

.

4.A Compound-Complex Sentence.

A compound-complex sentence has at least two independent clauses and at least one

dependent clause

For example:

I saw him when he arrived the first time but I did not see him when he came again
