There has been no research on idioms representing intelligence and understanding in both English and Vietnamese This study aims to fill that gap, contributing to improved learner comprehension and knowledge of this specific category of idioms Additionally, it offers valuable suggestions for teaching and learning these idiomatic expressions effectively.

Ihe study is carried out for the following objectives

This study aims to analyze and compare idioms in English and Vietnamese that express intelligence and understanding, highlighting both their similarities and fundamental differences It examines the syntactic and semantic features of these idiomatic expressions to better understand how each language conveys these concepts Through this analysis, the research provides insights into the cross-linguistic nuances of idioms related to intelligence, contributing valuable knowledge for language learners and linguists alike.

Sceondly, iW presenis some implications in teaching and leaning English idioms denoting intelligence and understanding,

The study attempts to answer the following questions:

2, What are some teaching implications for using appropriate idioms denoting intelligence and understanding in teaching English?

Idioms are considered an interesting and popular phenomenon of every language Thus, they play an important role in all languages in general,

Lnglish and Vietnamese in particular ‘hey also add color to the language and make the communication more lively and interesting Therefore, effective communication cannol be achicved successfully without idioms.

English is a language rich in idioms, which are expressive phrases unique to the language that often defy logical and grammatical rules Without idioms, English would lose much of its variety and humor in both speech and writing However, the background and etymological origins of most idioms remain obscure, adding an intriguing layer to their use and understanding.

Many students have the opportunity to travel abroad, but they often face difficulties understanding idioms used by native speakers in the United States These language barriers can lead to feelings of embarrassment and frustration, especially when students cannot comprehend idiomatic expressions in daily conversations Developing a strong knowledge of idioms is essential for improving speaking skills and facilitating more effective communication in real-life situations.

Idioms are a crucial part of vocabulary due to their frequent use in discourse, yet they pose significant challenges for English learners because of their unique characteristics They often have brief, extraordinary forms, contain key words, and hold profound meanings, allowing speakers to express feelings, attitudes, and cultural nuances that go beyond literal words Idioms reflect speakers’ viewpoints, emotions, personalities, and cultural backgrounds, making them essential for understanding language use They are rooted in various linguistic aspects such as semantics, syntax, phonetics, and pragmatics, and showcase flexibility and creativity in language Moreover, idioms embody cultural and linguistic knowledge, passed down through generations, and mastering them helps learners gain deeper insights into different cultures, people, and languages.

Idioms have attracted a mumber of researchers and linguists who have researched on idioms and the application in (caching and learning Such as" The

Yoko, 1993) In the thesis the author made an attempt to investigate into Linglish idioms from different aspects

There has been no previous research on idioms related to intelligence and understanding in English and Vietnamese This study aims to fill this gap by exploring how these idioms are used and understood in both languages The findings are expected to contribute to enhancing learners' comprehension and knowledge of idioms expressing intelligence Additionally, the study offers valuable suggestions for teaching and learning these specific idioms effectively.

English is a language rich in idioms—expressions unique to the language that often defy logical and grammatical rules These idioms are essential for maintaining the variety and humor in both speech and writing Despite their importance, the origins and etymology of most idioms remain obscure, adding an intriguing layer to their use in the language.

Many students traveling abroad face challenges understanding native speakers' idioms, which can lead to feelings of embarrassment and frustration Difficulties with idiomatic expressions in the United States highlight the importance of having a strong knowledge of idioms to improve language skills Mastering idioms enables students to communicate more effectively and confidently in everyday conversations abroad, enhancing their overall language proficiency and cultural understanding.

Idioms are a vital part of vocabulary due to their frequent use in speech, but their unique features pose challenges for English learners They often have concise and extraordinary forms, contain key words, and carry deep meanings that reflect what speakers intend to convey beyond literal words This allows idioms to express personal viewpoints, feelings, attitudes, and aspects of culture, showcasing the speaker’s personality and cultural background Additionally, idioms are rooted in various linguistic aspects such as semantics, syntax, phonetics, phonology, and pragmatics, while also demonstrating flexibility in language usage They embody the intersection of culture, language proficiency, and creative expression, making them enduring elements passed down through generations Therefore, mastering idioms enhances learners’ understanding of diverse cultures, people, and languages, enriching their overall language competence.
