Chapter II: The perceptions of human personality as represented by the 12 zodiac animals

of the Vietnamese and Japanese people According to the two countries' concepts, this chapter has specifically stated the human personality corresponding to the 12 animals

Chapter III: Differences in Vietnamese and Japanese perceptions of human personality as represented by 12 Zodiac animals The writer has drawn differences in the concept of

human personality corresponding to the 12 zodiacs of the Japanese and the Vietnamese through this comparison

In this essay, the author concludes that, despite their common ancestors, the Japanese and Vietnamese representative animals and perspectives are distinct The Japanese use rabbits, sheep, and boars to represent the 12 zodiac animals, whereas the Vietnamese use cats, goats, and pigs Both the Japanese and the Vietnamese rely on the unique and outstanding

characteristics of each of the 12 animals However, because each country views culture and religion differently, there is a difference in the concept of human personality that

corresponds to the two countries' 12 zodiac animals

INTRODUCTION

Research problem and rationale

Since ancient times, people in Asia, – especially East Asia, have placed strong belief in spiritual factors, including the value of the 12 animals The development and application of the values of the 12 Zodiac animals into the thinking and lifestyle of East Asian residents,

particularly Japanese and Vietnamese residents, is extensive, reaching into every "corner" of the two countries' humans' lives As a consequence, attempting to recover and decoding the elements and problems of the 12 Zodiac animals is a crucial issue in accessing and exploring the traditional values that the Japanese and Vietnamese people apply For thousands of years, to see that

traditional values will not be lost if you know how to use and apply them in your life We can easily learn about the cultures of countries, particularly Japan and Vietnam, in today's

modernized society, where information technology is booming However, there is still a scarcity

of information in the media about the concept of the 12 zodiac animals in Vietnam and Japan So

I created this topic to highlight the cultural similarities and differences between the two countries

As far as I know, there are two authors, Pham Duc Duong and Pham Thanh Tinh, who are learning about the culture of the 12 Zodiac animals: "Many authors have written about the 12 Zodiac animals, especially when Tet comes, people describe the virtues of the Zodiac animals properties of each zodiac sign, predicting the personality and fate of those who have that zodiac sign, etc., but there has not been a systematic study." (Excerpt from the Cultural Heritage

newspaper, "12 Zodiac Animals in Vietnamese Culture.") There are also researchers who study the 12 typical zodiac animals, such as author Nguyen Cung Thong, who published an article titled

"Vietnamese Origin of the Names of 12 Animals" in the "Proceeds of Conferences and Seminars

of VNU." Because 12 animals is a fairly broad field, there are still many topics that have not been addressed The topic "Differences in the concept of human personality corresponding to the 12 Zodiacs of the Japanese and Vietnamese" is one of them According to my survey, there is still no research comparing the concept of human personality with the 12 zodiac animals

Trang 7

Research objectives

In this topic, with the aim of finding out "Differences in Vietnamese and Japanese

perceptions of human personality as represented by 12 Zodiacs animals", the writer uses the following methods:

Theories must be analyzed and synthesized

To grasp the content that has been inherited and promoted, I first refer to documents,

previous research works in the field of culture of the 12 animals, and especially documents on human personality through the 12 animals of Vietnam and Japan In addition, searching for references and documents at the Vietnam National University, Hanoi library, the University of Foreign Languages - Vietnam National University, Hanoi library, and social journals to search and analyze the topics Research or references from related research works also aid in the analysis of definitions, terms, and scientific theoretical foundations for reference and absorption

into my research topic

Method of hypotheses

"There is no difference in Vietnamese and Japanese people's concepts of human personality through 12 animals," hypothesizes the study Then I set out to test this hypothesis

Method of comparison

Through the use of 12 zodiac animals, I compared Vietnamese and Japanese people's

perceptions of human personality

Analytical and summarization techniques

I organized, linked, analyzed, and evaluated the interviewed content based on the results of

my document searching and referencing As a result, I draw conclusions about the differences in human personality between Vietnam and Japan based on the 12 zodiac animals

Trang 8

Significance of the study

Understanding human personalities based on the culture of the 12 zodiac animals in Vietnam and Japan to compare, find out the similarities and differences in culture between Vietnam and Japan Creating a theoretical framework to investigate the Japanese and Vietnamese conceptions of human personality as they relate to the 12 zodiac animals Furthermore, it identifies differences in the two countries' conceptions of human personality via the 12 zodiac animals

Scope of the study

The spiritual culture and beliefs of the Japanese and Vietnamese people (the culture of the 12 zodiac animals)

According to folklore

Trang 9

The origins of the Japanese and Vietnamese zodiac animals all stem from a legendary story According to legend, on the Jade Emperor's birthday He organized a competition in which all animals could compete The competition required 12 animals to race to see who could finish first The challenge is to navigate a dense wooded forest and cross a wide river

Knowing the buffalo is healthy and friendly, the cat and mouse immediately discussed how to fool the buffalo That is, to take them for a ride while promising to let the buffalo win When the three animals got close to the finish line, the mouse pushed the cat into the water and jumped in front of the buffalo As a result, the first mouse to cross the finish line is at the top of each of the

12 zodiac signs The buffalo comes next Although the tiger is the lord of all species, it is a

formidable opponent But only in third place The fourth rabbit is up next The dragon can fly, but only in fifth place The dragon explained that he needed to make rain in order to extinguish the fire on the road The snake slithered forward as the horse was about to sprint to the finish line The horse panics and follows the snake to the finish line As a result, snakes were ranked sixth, and horses were ranked seventh Goats, monkeys, and chickens are a group of friends who

believe they are small, so they assist one another in the race As a result, the Jade Emperor

honored the eighth goat, the ninth monkey, and the tenth chicken The dog arrived at the finish line not long after Finally, there's the pig Because he was eating and then sleeping, the pig was able to finish in time to take 12th place

According to scientific evidence

Many people still believe that the 12 zodiac animals came from China However, in a recent study of the ancient Vietnamese language, linguist Nguyen Cung Thong discovered the origins of

12 animals native to Vietnam The lunisolar calendar is based on the Moon's regularly changing cycle, according to Eastern culture As a result, the 12 zodiac animals correspond to 12 hours in a day, 12 months in a year, and 12 years in a zodiac - these are important foundations for

calculating the calendar and a sign to judge each person's destiny according to the Zodiac

Trang 10

Vietnam and China have had a long history of cultural exchange dating back at least 2,000 years Cultural exchanges continued to accumulate and pile up on each other, making it difficult to distinguish the distinctive features of each ethnic group Furthermore, there aren't many ancient documents left, even in the archives of ancient Han documents, making the study difficult and time-consuming This is also what motivates Mr Nguyen Cung Thong to uncover the mysteries

of ancient languages

Mr Thong stated that he began studying Vietnamese in Australia in the early 1970s He

discovered some ancient Vietnamese words that the Vietnamese used to refer to the 12 animals with long origins before the 12 animals appeared in a study on the origin of the 12 animals to find the origin of Vietnamese

According to him, the Bac Binh language with transliteration (pinyin) for calling animals in China is: zi, chou, yn, mau, cup, s, wè, wèi, shèn, yu, ru, comedy This name has nothing to do with the animal's name in China today Furthermore, even after restoring the medieval syllables, there is no similarity

Mr Nguyen Cung Thong has demonstrated that the 12 zodiac animals are directly derived from the genus Vietic in the Austroasiatic language family using the method of restoring linguistics The Vietnamese created the calendar and the 12 zodiac animals based on astronomical

observations; since then, the Chinese have adopted the 12 Chinese zodiac animals, though they have attempted to change and delete them in the later stages traces of Vietnamese culture in the

12 animals, but they were unsuccessful, so that today, linguistic studies have contributed to clarifying the origin of the 12 animals, proving that it originated from the Vietnamese people's creativity

Each month of the year is represented by a different animal, each with its own personality and characteristics According to astrology, every person born in a month corresponding to any animal is influenced in some way, or more specifically, has the personality of that animal The Japanese also believe that age has an impact on a person's personality and destiny However, the Japanese and Vietnamese have very different perspectives on human personality as it relates to the 12 zodiac animals
