ABSTRACT For the time being, people are forced to adapt to the rapid changes due to the industrialization and digitalization era New innovation, creativity, opportunities but also challenges have been brought about by the emergence of industry 4.0, especially in the field of technology One technology that has seen significant development is Artificial Intelligence (AI), this groundbreaking technology has altered the educational curricula,

particularly in science, technology, mathematics and engineering Al is now an integral

part of education, enabling productive learning through virtual models and facilitating learners’ specialized educational possibilities on a global scale Despite the fact that Al holds a lot of promises, using this technological tool requires wise users, this growing development raises worries about possible abuse such as plagiarism and dishonesty in

academic settings, which result in negative moral and social consequences This report

offers some basic understandings about the AI technology, the Al abuse phenomenon, suggestions of directions and solutions to boost the effectiveness in using this new technology

Keywords: Artificial Intelligence (AI), Abuse, Smart Users

CHAPTER 1; INTRODUCTION

1 Problem identification

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into Vietnamese education has

made remarkable changes in teaching and learning processes While AI offers a

number of advantages, concerns about its misuse among students have also arisen, especially in higher education A study conducted by the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology revealed that 38% of students admitted to using AI tools like ChatGPT to complete assignments without proper understanding of study materials given Another one showed that approximately 60% of the students acknowledged the need for ethical guidelines regarding Al usage in the academic environment The situation highlights the duality of this technology as both a beneficial tool and contribution to potential ethical issues in education

2 Objectives and key highlights of the report

Trang 8

Understanding the alarming rate of this phenomenon, this report aims to provide further information on the subject of the AI abuse, in which AI is used for unethical purposes, and to present our approach in increasing AI efficiency By empowering individuals with the essential knowledge to utilize Al, we aspire to not only bring about

societal benefits but also to lay the groundwork for a more responsible and profitable Al

landscape

The report consists of five main parts:

- The theoretical basis of Al and its abuse

- Causes and impacts of AI abuse

- Case study regarding Al abuse

- Recommended measures to tackle AI abuse

- Validation of the offered measures

improperly, which undermines basic human skills and does harm to not only individuals but also organizations and society as a whole This occurs when humans place an blind

over-reliance on the products that AI generated without actually checking the authentication and accuracy of that information, or when AI is maliciously utilized for unethical motives

1.2.2 Al abuse in education The phenomenon of abusing and misusing AI im a field that is of great importance

to society like education has been at an alarming rate, as nowadays, Al can be employed

by both students and educators

In particular, students have been using AI to generate highly accurate answers for their assignments and tests, thereby passing the course without actually engaging in studying For instance, they have been using AI to compose articles, reports, and assignments without conducting their own research They also use Al to detect and fix their grammatical mistakes and document formatting, thus, their last result could be flawless with minimal effort With virtual assistants (such as ChatGPT, Gauthmath and Brainly), they can receive intermediate support when facing problems in their homeworks and examinations

In correspondence to tutors, they can use automotive tools to design their lectures and assessments automatically without attribution or performing their real expertise In such lectures, there can also be misinformations or outdated content, as when abusing Al

they might not care about assessing the accuracy of those contents Some may even profit

Trang 10

by purchasing Al-generated resources without credit, that is not to mention the state of teachers mass-producing books written by advanced AI technologies

2 Details

2.1, Causes

Artificial intelligence (AI) advancement in recent years has offered numerous advantages related to many areas of life Apart from significant benefits, the misuse and abuse of Al have become prevalent, leading to unethical applications Therefore, this

report will outline the key reasons behind the rise of Al abuse

Regarding education, one of the primary factors that drives the high applications

of AI tools is high efficacy and cost-efficiency Specifically, Al systems enable both

educators and students to increase productivity and effectiveness by providing more

digital resources and automating evaluations Thereby reducing the workload as well as

allowing institutions to maintain high efficacy, which leads to a high dependence on this

tool Aside from that, the advancement of Al tools allows updating the latest news and information on online websites without requiring fees to access This alleviates financial burden, especially for people in mountainous areas where formal education is challenging

to access Al will be an advantage in filling gaps in teaching staff, leading to a reduction

in human-led education

Furthermore, excessive applications of AI result from the mindset that AI is a

panacea for all modern-day issues, regardless of its complexity The oversimplification as

“one-size-fits-all” of Al results in inappropriate applications of this tool since students

attempt to integrate AI into all their tasks, such as implementing research, summarizing content, and generating illustrations Combined with the high expectation of exceptional

academic performance from tutors, students are inclined to take advantage of Al tools to ensure their quality of academic records since common belief that Al-generated solutions outperform human calculations leads to the growth of this issue

Last but not least, AI abuse results from the increasing value of this tool It is undeniable that AI enhances accessibility and precision in performing complicated tasks

Being appealed by this function, individuals make excessive effort to adopt AI tools in

areas where traditional methods are unavailable, resulting in overapplications

2.2 Impacts

2.2.1, On student's privacy

10

Trang 11

Thanks to many remarkable technological breakthroughs, AI is gradually

infiltrating many aspects of our lives Compared to the past when there was no technology, people, including students and intellectual workers need the assistance of Al

to complete their tasks more easily Chat GPT can demonstrate this as students have a propensity to use it for making content or designing shifts

However, the rapid improvement of AI that AI can approach, collect, and learn from data we share on social media gives rise to many dire repercussions, especially

privacy

Privacy plays a prominent role in ensuring safety, personal dignity and freedom

Within the age of data exploitation, it is essential for students to raise awareness about why publicizing personal information online such as names, contact, or ages In the light

of the extraordinary ability of Al these days, privacy, a fundamental right, should be considered as a warning problem To illustrate, as intimate information is shared freely,

AI can make decisions based on these patterns that makes people struggle to discern This means that students cannot be aware of the fact that their personal data is used to influence them a lot

Deepfakes is a powerful example of the impact while Al is abused Teenagers tend

to share pictures or intimate information on social media platforms freely, especially with the increase of Facebook users and other apps This gives rise to the rapidly uncontrolled growth of deepfakes This tool uses information from different resources even if it is not allowed Thanks to the support of Al, deepfakes allows students to create pictures which contain real or non-consistent people by editing Pupils have a propensity to use and edit

whatever they want This triggers the creation of sexual or non-polite images, impacting

seriously on the privacy of society Some examples of this app, including the chat group named N in Korean where people pay money for porngraphic content, mental violence or women body-shaming, has been criticized and condemned harshly There are many traumatic cases when students, especially weak and inexperienced girls, get depressed

and self-deprecate after realizing that their faces or bodies are used to edit offensive

pictures or content Briefly, Students are not mature enough to recognize problems which

can be detrimental for their privacy while abusing AI tools

2.2.2 On creativity and critical-thinking skills

11

Trang 12

Al, exactly, has almost all knowledge about all resources which seems impossible

in humans Making full use of Al to research and perceive information is initially a good

thing when pupils can not only save time but also get clear and simple answers, completing the tasks more easily However, students who apply AI tools into academic learning and professional work are likely to be addicted and rely more on AI as its direct

and efficient results, and along with its come creativity and decision-making skill

In terms of creativity, it is necessary for students and educators to have new

creative innovations While it is normally hard and time-consuming, especially in

creative fields such as design, writing, and music composition, Al tools can give assistance to generate content quickly and efficiently Moreover, the task takes hours to finish but AI just needs 5s to provide users with a perfect and detailed answer as you expected Due to its merit, students tend to be dependent solely on AI tools, causing the

deterioration of creative ability Take Chat GPT for example Students, such as

highschoolers or university pupils, requiring the advanced level of knowledge, excessively use Chat GPT as a thinking partner to develop, write, and complete tasks even if they can be done by humans Users may become less inclined to think outside the

box owing to the instant solutions that AI tools provide

Overreliance-Al, additionally, takes a heavy toll on critical thinking skills Analyzing information, evaluating arguments and making decisions based on logical

thinking ability and proofs are critical thinking A research of the impact of AI on loss in

critical thinking and decision-making skills conducted by Sayed Fayaz Ahmad in 2023 can be the case This study showed the data from 285 students from different universities

in China and Pakiss, illustrating that about 27.7% in the reduction of decision-making and 68.6% in privacy are the implications of Al-relying Artificial Intelligence has been

provided with prediction ability and analyzing skill based on the wide amount of data and

knowledge, creating clear and exact decisions Therefore, pupils are prone to the assistance of Al to make AI do the thinking for them, which is a detrimental contributor

to the decrease of cognitive processes

2.2.3 On the teaching and learning quality The phenomenon of abusing and misusing AI in education has been at an alarming rate Due to its convenience, Al can be employed by both students and educators,

12

Trang 13

diminishing the real value of the teaching-learning process and impacting fairness in the educational environment

In particular, students have been using AI to generate highly accurate answers for their assignments and tests, thereby passing the course without actually engaging in studying They have been using AI to compose articles, reports , and assignments without conducting their own research, which takes a heavy toll on their writing skills, self- researching skills, analytical skills and critical thinking skills They, moreover, use Al to detect and fix their grammatical mistakes and document formatting, thus, their last result could be flawless with minimal effort With virtual assistants such as ChatGPT, Gauthmath and Grammarly, they can recetve intermediate solutions when facing

problems in their homeworks and examinations

In correspondence to tutors, they can use automotive tools to design their lectures and assessments automatically When excessively used, Al can make teachers become inflexible and uncreative in their teaching methods Moreover, as the curriculum designed by AI may fail to understand specific needs and the abilities of each student, the process of teaching-learning between teachers and students cannot show personalization and proper adjustment like the traditional way of conveying lectures, leading to stereotyped or inappropriate educational content This can have a two-sided destructive implication, as teachers may lose their skill of understanding their student, while learners may lose interest in the lessons, and consequently, even effectiveness in studying 2.3 Case study

2.3.1, Introduction

In today’s digital age, we have already been used to the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) into many fields, especially in education Al has emerged as a powerful tool for enhancing teaching and learning performance We are all familiar with a huge number of AI applications nowadays, for example Gaumath, Grammarly, etc One of the

most popular Al nowadays is ChatGPT, which is developed by Open AI As one of the

most advanced artificial intelligence applications, ChatGPT has drawn much public attention across the globe The integration of this Al chatbot into educational settings has also given rise to many problems, such as plagiarism This raises the issue of having to research and find solutions, creating opportunities for the development of education in a

context of continuous multi-dimensional impact of social networks

13

Trang 14

In this regard, this study examines ChatGPT in education through a qualitative instrumental case study to understand the impact of ChatGPT on students This study

collects data from a survey conducted on students from Foreign Trade University and

other universities in Ho Chi Minh City

2.3.2 Literature review

It is indicated in many studies that ChatGPT can improve students’ learning performance However, being overly reliant on Al can reduce critical thinking and creativity Nowadays, there is a growing trend of students using ChatGPT for doing

tasks, often due to time constraints or lack of confidence in their abilities This raises the question of whether ChatGPT is a life-saver or an evil that destroys us

2.3.3 Methodology Data collection in this study 1s collected through a survey which is conducted on undergraduates from Foreign Trade University and other universities in Ho Chi Minh City There are 87 students in total who answer the given questions in a Google Form,

providing us more insights into the role of ChatGPT to students in today’s digital age Their identities are kept anonymous as ethical considerations are prioritized

It is shown in the above graph that more than 90% students use ChatGPT daily,

showing a high level of AI usage in a day
