TEACHING EXPERIENCE PARTICIPATION IN REVIEWING FOR THE 2025 NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION EXAM THROUGH INKNOE CLASSPOINT ACTIVITIES FIELD: FOREIGN LANGUAGES Academic year: 2024

INTRODUCTION

Rationale

In Vietnam, the National High School Graduation Exam plays a vital role in shaping students' academic and career futures At Thanh Chương 3 High School, however, teachers face a significant challenge due to low motivation and participation among 12th graders in English review sessions, which adversely affects students' overall learning outcomes.

Many students exhibit passive learning behaviors, attending mandatory review sessions without a true interest in enhancing their English skills Classroom engagement is minimal, with few students actively participating or contributing to discussions Additionally, some students become distracted, engage in unrelated activities, or even skip review sessions, which worsens the situation.

The low engagement in exam preparation is largely due to traditional methods that focus on rote memorization and repetitive exercises, which fail to engage students and make learning feel monotonous Furthermore, the one-way delivery of knowledge in classrooms restricts student interaction, resulting in poor retention and ineffective learning outcomes.

Many students do not prioritize English as it is an elective subject Even those who select it for university entrance exams often face challenges such as low self-confidence, fear of making mistakes, and difficulties in communication, which hinders their active participation.

Limited access to modern learning resources significantly affects student motivation at Thanh Chương 3 High School, situated in a rural mountainous region of Nghệ An The school often lacks essential educational facilities and technological tools, which hampers the availability of interactive teaching aids As a result, teachers face challenges in employing engaging teaching strategies that foster student participation.

Integrating educational technology into English review sessions can effectively address various challenges Inknoe ClassPoint, an interactive learning tool, enhances the learning experience through live quizzes, polls, and collaborative activities, making it more engaging By providing real-time feedback, promoting peer interaction, and facilitating self-assessment, ClassPoint empowers students to actively participate in their learning, thereby increasing their motivation and involvement.

This study investigates the effectiveness of Inknoe ClassPoint in boosting student engagement during English exam preparation By utilizing this technology, the research aims to foster a more stimulating learning environment.

THEORETICAL BACKGROUND

1.1 Definitions of Motivation and Participation

Motivation, as defined by the Cambridge Dictionary, is the willingness to act or the factors that inspire such willingness In educational psychology, it encompasses the internal processes that initiate, guide, and sustain goal-oriented behaviors, significantly impacting students' readiness to learn, their engagement in academic activities, and their overall performance Ryan and Deci (2000) categorize motivation into intrinsic and extrinsic types, each contributing uniquely to the learning experience.

Participation in education is the active involvement of students in the learning process, encompassing activities such as listening, observing, engaging in discussions, asking questions, and collaborating on tasks This engagement is crucial for effective learning, as it enables students to interact with the material, their peers, and instructors, leading to a deeper understanding of the content.

1.2 Types of Motivation and Participation

There are two main types of motivation including intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation

Intrinsic motivation stems from internal rewards, leading students to engage in learning for the inherent joy and satisfaction it brings For instance, a student may feel intrinsically motivated to study English due to a love for literature or a fascination with new languages This type of motivation is linked to deeper learning and sustained engagement over time.

Extrinsic motivation is fueled by external rewards, prompting students to participate in learning activities to earn grades, receive praise from teachers and parents, or secure future career opportunities Although it can effectively encourage task completion, extrinsic motivation may not foster long-term engagement or a deep understanding of the material.

Participation consists of two main types namely passive participation and active participation

Passive participation in the classroom refers to students being present but not actively involved in the learning process This can manifest as listening to lectures, observing demonstrations, or reading assigned materials without engaging in discussions Although passive participation is an essential aspect of learning, it frequently leads to reduced retention and comprehension of the subject matter.

Active participation requires students to engage actively in their learning process through asking questions, contributing to discussions, collaborating on group projects, and taking part in interactive activities This approach enhances comprehension and retention of information, as it fosters critical thinking, knowledge application, and deeper engagement with the material.

1.3 Factors influencing motivation and participation

Interest and curiosity significantly enhance motivation and participation in learning When students are truly engaged with a subject, they tend to actively participate in learning activities and maintain their efforts over time Curiosity drives them to explore new topics, ask questions, and seek out additional resources, fostering deeper learning and increased participation For instance, a student passionate about English literature may read extensively and contribute actively to class discussions.

Confidence plays a crucial role in motivating students and encouraging their participation in learning Those with high confidence are inclined to set ambitious goals, persevere through challenges, and engage actively in class discussions Their belief in overcoming obstacles cultivates resilience and sustained effort By enhancing confidence through positive feedback, mastery experiences, and role modeling, educators can boost students' motivation and foster greater engagement in their learning activities.

Students' goals and aspirations significantly influence their motivation and engagement in academic activities Clear and achievable goals enhance focus, resulting in increased participation in studies These goals can be short-term, such as improving grades in a specific subject, or long-term, like gaining admission to a preferred university Additionally, aspirations tied to future careers and personal achievements encourage students to exert more effort and remain dedicated to their academic endeavors, fostering greater involvement in class discussions and activities.

Teachers are essential in influencing student motivation and engagement Their enthusiasm, support, and constructive feedback greatly affect students' attitudes toward learning A passionate teacher who shows genuine interest in students' progress can inspire active participation Furthermore, by fostering a positive and inclusive classroom environment, teachers create a sense of belonging that encourages students to engage more fully in classroom activities.

Peer interactions significantly impact student motivation and participation Positive peer support and collaborative learning foster a sense of community, enhancing motivation and encouraging active engagement in class When students collaborate on projects and discussions, they are more likely to remain motivated In contrast, negative peer pressure and a competitive atmosphere can reduce motivation, leading to increased anxiety and disengagement.

The classroom environment, encompassing both its physical and emotional aspects, significantly influences student motivation and participation A well-organized and resource-rich classroom enhances motivation by equipping students with essential tools for success Additionally, a supportive atmosphere that promotes safety and respect encourages students to express their ideas and take risks, fostering intrinsic motivation and active participation Cultivating a classroom culture that values each student's contributions can result in increased engagement and improved learning outcomes.

Educational technology, such as interactive tools like Inknoe Classpoint, significantly enhances student engagement and focus These technologies facilitate active participation, offer immediate feedback, and create dynamic learning experiences that make lessons enjoyable By integrating interactive technology, educators can effectively increase student motivation and participation.

The implementation of educational technologies that provide instant feedback significantly benefits students It enables them to promptly evaluate their progress, pinpoint areas needing improvement, and deepen their comprehension of the subject matter This immediate feedback not only solidifies learning but also boosts students' overall academic performance.

7 confidence and commitment to achieving their educational goals Overall, using educational technology in teaching helps create a stimulating and focused learning environment that supports student engagement and learning outcomes

Inknoe Classpoint is a cutting-edge educational tool that enhances classroom engagement and learning By integrating effortlessly with Microsoft PowerPoint, it allows teachers to convert traditional presentations into lively, interactive lessons.

2 Real situation of the review for the National High School Graduation exam of 12 th graders at Thanh Chuong 3 High School

The 2024-2025 academic year introduces the renewed National High School Graduation exam Test, aligned with the 2018 General Education Program, presenting significant challenges for the education sector, including Thanh Chuong 3 High School To meet learning goals, the school has implemented effective strategies, including dedicated teaching staff, structured review programs, and a focus on core subjects, all of which contribute to student success Regular assessments and a supportive peer learning environment further enhance the review process, ensuring that students are well-prepared and confident for their exams.

However, alongside these efforts, there are persistent challenges that continue to affect the review for the National High School Graduation exam Test at Thanh Chuong 3 High School

In Thanh Chuong 3, review sessions for the National High School Graduation exam primarily utilize traditional teaching methods, including lectures, printed practice tests, and rote memorization Although these approaches offer essential foundational knowledge, they frequently lack the ability to actively engage students and accommodate various learning styles.

The integration of technology in review sessions is often insufficient, with many teachers relying solely on PowerPoint presentations This lack of interactive and engaging educational tools diminishes student motivation and participation, leading to monotonous review sessions that contribute to student disengagement.

Many 12th graders at Thanh Chuong 3 High School show low motivation and participation in review sessions due to several factors These include the monotonous nature of traditional review methods, the pressure of impending exams, and the exhausting summer heat that affects both physical and mental well-being during this critical period.

The Ministry of Education and Training's decision to make English an elective subject in the National High School Graduation Exam has led to a notable decrease in student registrations At Thanh Chuong 3 High School, this trend is particularly clear, with only 25 students from class 12D1 and 21 students from class 12D2 opting to take the English exam This decline underscores the difficulties in encouraging student participation in English review sessions.

To tackle these challenges, continuous support, innovative strategies, and collaboration among educators, teachers, and students are essential Thanh Chuong 3 High School is dedicated to providing students with thorough preparation for the national high school graduation exam, working diligently to overcome obstacles and achieve academic success through a variety of innovative approaches.

3 Factual figures of students’ English language abilities before the use of ClassPoint App (results from pre-test)

Two classes (12D1 and 12D2) involved in this study were randomly assigned to be the treatment groups (12D1), and the other class the control group(12D2)

To better understand students' English language abilities, a pre-test was conducted prior to implementing Inknoe Classpoint This assessment aimed to evaluate students' prior knowledge, identify areas of weakness, establish realistic goals, and measure the effectiveness of their language performance using the app Statistics were collected from the pre-test for two classes, 12D1 and 12D2, before the app's application.

Table 1 Results of Pre-test
