1 NGHE AN DEPARTMENT EDUCATION AND TRAINING HERMANN GMEINER VINH SCHOOL EXPERIENCE INITIATIVE ENHANCING INTEREST IN LEARNING ENGLISH FOR GRADE 11 STUDENTS THROUGH ONLINE APPLICA

INTRODUCTION

The reasons for choosing the study

In today's world, technology plays a crucial role in our everyday lives, particularly for Year 11 students who frequently use mobile devices and the internet By incorporating online applications into the English learning process, educators can enhance students' language skills while fostering a fun and engaging learning atmosphere.

Online apps provide significant advantages through personalization, offering diverse resources and activities tailored to each student's unique abilities and interests This customization fosters a flexible and enjoyable learning environment, encouraging students to engage with English in a more natural and positive manner.

Online applications foster interaction and social connections, allowing students to engage in group activities, challenges, and online games These experiences enhance their English language and communication skills while also promoting teamwork and effective communication in a digital setting.

The integration of online applications in English learning enhances flexibility and convenience, allowing students to access resources and activities anytime and anywhere, whether on mobile devices or personal computers This eliminates the limitations of time and space, fostering a more conducive learning environment.

Leveraging online applications to foster interest in learning English among grade 11 students enhances their learning efficiency while also supporting their overall development in language and essential life skills.

The objectives of the study

The study at Hermann Gmeiner High School aims to evaluate how online applications can enhance 11th-grade students' interest in learning English By incorporating innovative digital tools into the curriculum, the research seeks to create an engaging learning environment that improves language proficiency This initiative explores the potential of technology to make English language learning more appealing and accessible, ultimately fostering a deeper and more sustained interest in the subject among high school students.

The scope of the study

This study focuses on the 11th-grade students at Hermann Gmeiner High School during the 2024-2025 school year, aiming to implement and evaluate online applications that enhance English language learning Data will be collected throughout the academic year to assess student engagement, performance, and attitudes towards learning English.

The study methodology

The research methodology for evaluating the influence of online applications on increasing English learning interest among 11th-grade students at Hermann Gmeiner High School will utilize a combination of pre-test, post-test, and survey techniques The study will begin with a pre-test to establish baseline knowledge and interest levels.

• Objective: To establish a baseline of students' English proficiency and their initial interest in learning English

• Method: All participating students will complete a standardized English language test and a survey at the beginning of the school year The survey will

5 assess students' attitudes towards English learning and their familiarity with using online applications for educational purposes

• Duration: Throughout the 2024-2025 school year

Students will engage with various online applications integrated into their English curriculum, utilizing interactive exercises, quizzes, video lessons, and collaborative projects Continuous monitoring and surveys will be conducted to assess their progress and effectiveness.

• Frequency: Midway through the school year (mid-term)

• Purpose: To monitor progress and gather interim feedback on students' experiences and engagement levels with the online applications

• Objective: To evaluate the change in students' English proficiency and their interest in the subject after regular use of the online tools

At the conclusion of the school year, students will retake the standardized English test and participate in a follow-up survey to assess improvements in their language skills and changes in their attitudes towards learning English.

• Comparative Analysis: The results from the pre-tests and post-tests will be compared to measure the effectiveness of the online applications in improving English proficiency

• Survey Analysis: Responses from the initial and follow-up surveys will be analyzed to determine changes in students' interest and engagement with English learning

This structured methodology will help in quantitatively assessing the impact of technology on learning outcomes and qualitatively understanding students' attitudes and engagement levels.

The new factors of the study

The study highlights the integration of technology in English learning, contrasting with traditional methods that rely on textbooks and teacher-led instruction It introduces online applications that provide interactive, multimedia content to boost engagement and immersion These tools facilitate personalized learning, real-time feedback, and access to diverse language resources, which are often lacking in conventional approaches Furthermore, the research underscores the importance of student autonomy and collaboration through digital platforms, promoting active participation in the learning process This innovative approach aims to enhance English proficiency while creating a more dynamic and responsive educational environment.

CONTENTS

Theoretical background knowledge

This study on enhancing interest in English through online applications is grounded in the Vietnamese Department of Education and Training's policies that promote technology integration in education Recent years have seen a notable shift in Vietnam's educational policies towards adopting digital tools to enhance learning outcomes A key initiative, the National Foreign Language Project 2020, launched by the Prime Minister in 2008, aims to improve English language skills at all educational levels, establishing ambitious proficiency targets to meet the country's socio-economic demands and facilitate global integration.

After facing challenges during the initial implementation of educational reforms, revisions were made, including updated directives in 2017 and the adoption of new strategies for comprehensive digital transformation in education, as detailed in Decision No 131/QD-TTg.

In 2022, a pivotal decision was made to promote the extensive use of digital tools and methodologies in education, emphasizing the importance of technology in fostering educational excellence and equipping students for a digital future.

Recent advancements in digital education in Vietnam align with a global trend while addressing the country's specific socio-economic and cultural needs This framework supports research aimed at evaluating the effects of digital tools on language learning The Ministry of Education and Training's dedication to improving IT applications in education fosters a positive atmosphere for the adoption and evaluation of innovative educational technologies.

Practical situation of the problems

Before this study was conducted at Hermann Gmeiner High School, English language learning faced significant challenges, including low student engagement and motivation Traditional teaching methods, which emphasized rote memorization and grammar exercises, often disconnected the language from practical and contemporary applications, failing to align with students' interests and real-life communication needs.

The learning environment was hindered by a lack of diverse and engaging materials, as traditional classrooms primarily depended on textbooks The infrequent use of audio-visual aids failed to cater to the diverse learning preferences of students, ultimately preventing the development of a genuine interest and deep understanding of the English language.

The varying proficiency levels among students created significant challenges for educators in delivering effective lessons Advanced learners often felt the pace was too slow and the material unchallenging, while beginners struggled to keep up, resulting in a fragmented learning experience that failed to support all students adequately.

Despite the growing accessibility of educational technology, its integration into the English curriculum remains minimal and unstructured, representing a significant missed opportunity By leveraging these technologies, more personalized, adaptive, and engaging educational practices could be developed.

The integration of technology in teaching practices is hindered by teachers' limited readiness and training Many educators, who are used to traditional methods, lack the skills needed to effectively use digital tools This skills gap restricts the full realization of educational technology's benefits, resulting in continued low engagement and unsatisfactory learning outcomes in English education.

The pressing challenges in English education underscore the necessity for a modernized strategy that utilizes technology to create a more engaging, tailored, and relevant learning experience for 21st-century students.
