In 1992, South Korea and Vietnam officially established diplomatic relations, marking the beginning of a significant partnership As we celebrate the 30th anniversary of this bilateral relationship in 2022, it highlights the enduring ties and cooperation between the two nations.

South Korea is one of Vietnam's most significant partners in various sectors, including economy, politics, culture, and education Vietnam plays a crucial role in South Korea's New Southern Policy, with many cultural and historical similarities fostering vibrant cultural tourism between the two nations.

The collaborative process enhances cooperation between the two countries, contributing to the deeper development of their relationship.

The popularity of Korean culture is rising in Vietnam, driven by the Korean Wave, while Vietnamese culture and cuisine are gradually gaining recognition and preference in Korea Additionally, there is increasing interest in the traditional attire of both countries The Korean hanbok is regarded as a cultural symbol and a source of pride for the nation, just as the Vietnamese ao dai holds similar significance for the people of Vietnam.

I chose to explore the theme of "Hanbok in Modern Life (Compared to Vietnamese Ao Dai)" to deepen my understanding of Korean culture, particularly its fashion and traditional attire Through this research, I aim to identify the similarities and differences between Hanbok and Ao Dai Subsequently, I will examine ways to preserve and develop the traditional garments of both countries.

Hanbok is a cultural symbol and pride of the Korean people, continuously evolving with the changing times As a result, research focused on hanbok has been steadily increasing However, due to time and resource constraints, this review will only examine prior studies conducted in Vietnam There are no master's or doctoral theses on hanbok in Vietnam, but there are graduation theses and student academic papers available The review process referenced several academic papers related to this topic.

This article provides an overview of traditional Korean clothing, specifically focusing on the history, evolution, and characteristics of hanbok The research emphasizes the origins and transformations of hanbok, while not delving deeply into its individual components.

Through the review of previous studies mentioned above, various approaches and research methods regarding Hanbok have been identified This paper will utilize the findings from the literature review to focus on the role of Hanbok in modern life.

To stay warm and endure the hot summer, people in Korea have historically relied on clothing, particularly traditional attire.

They discovered various clothing materials, including hemp, ramie, cotton, and silk For instance, in winter, they utilized cotton or silk filled with cotton for warmth, while in summer, they crafted garments from lighter materials like hemp or ramie to allow for airflow and keep cool.

Clothing plays a significant role in understanding the identity of a nation and its historical context The characteristics of attire are shaped by the unique features of each era, climate, environment, and culture The existence of a distinct clothing culture in a country reflects its long-standing history According to the Hanbok Promotion Center portal, the exact origins of clothing practices among Koreans remain unclear, but tools such as the spinning wheel, bone needles, and weaving techniques have been integral to their textile traditions.

The origins of Korean clothing can be traced back to the Neolithic era, as evidenced by artifacts To accurately define hanbok, it is essential to understand the historical context of Korea and the evolution of this traditional attire Historical texts indicate that clothing systems have been established since the Gojoseon period and have evolved through the Goguryeo, Silla, Baekje, and Joseon dynasties into the Korean Empire According to mythology, Dangun founded Gojoseon in 2333 BC, marking the beginning of Korea's rich traditional culture Over time, Koreans have continuously adapted their traditional clothing to suit changing climates and historical periods The form and characteristics of hanbok have transformed significantly in response to various political systems and cultural shifts Thus, hanbok is a unique traditional attire that originated from Gojoseon and was perfected during the Joseon dynasty.

According to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the history of Hanbok can be traced back to the murals of Goguryeo tombs, where both men and women are depicted wearing this traditional attire.

Traditional Korean clothing, known as hanbok, typically consists of a long top called jeogori paired with pants or a skirt, varying by social status and occupation Men wore jeogori with pants, while women donned jeogori with skirts, often adding a durumagi for formality During the late Three Kingdoms period, noblewomen wore long tops cinched at the waist with long skirts, while noblemen opted for loose pants and jeogori Silk garments, introduced from China, were reserved for royalty and officials Commoners' hanbok was simpler, with women typically in gray attire and men wearing shorter versions of the durumagi Although the clothing styles of Baekje and Silla were similar to Goguryeo, they differed in width, color, and headwear decorations When Silla unified the Korean Peninsula, indigenous and foreign garments coexisted, with the unique feature of Korean clothing being the straight collar, while foreign attire featured a rounded collar In the 13th century, after the Goryeo dynasty established peace with Mongolia, hanbok began to reflect Mongolian influences, resulting in shorter skirts and waist-length jeogori, adorned with ribbons instead of ties, and elegantly curved sleeves.

The Joseon Dynasty was a society deeply rooted in Confucian moral values, where free interaction between men and women was strictly prohibited For instance, noblewomen were not allowed to meet anyone outside their immediate family, which included parents, siblings, and close relatives The traditional hanbok reflected the Confucian culture and the importance of social status during this period Due to gender distinctions, women were required to wear long garments and head coverings when going out, often using palanquins for transportation Women's clothing in the Joseon era primarily consisted of skirts and jeogori, which set fashion trends, with notable changes such as the waistline of the jeogori in the 16th century.

The garment is designed to be long enough to fully cover the body, featuring a wide fit The skirt, worn with a jeogori, is secured at the waist with a tie In the case of men's clothing, strict class distinctions impose limitations and regulations.

The traditional Korean attire, known as Hanbok, is a significant cultural symbol representing Korea's rich heritage It is characterized by vibrant colors and simple lines, reflecting the beauty of Korean aesthetics Hanbok is worn during important celebrations and ceremonies, showcasing its importance in Korean culture The design and style of Hanbok vary by season and occasion, emphasizing its versatility and cultural significance The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism highlights Hanbok as an essential element of Korea's identity, promoting its appreciation both domestically and internationally.

The ruling class men wore various ceremonial robes that reflected their status and dignity.

The traditional attire, including jeogori, pants, and po, is rooted in the clothing styles of a bygone era, reflecting the spirit and culture of that time In the 16th century, following the establishment of the nation, clothing became notably large, wide, and long, with a particular emphasis on the widespread use of various robes.

After the end of the Imjin War in the 17th century, significant changes occurred in women's clothing The jeogori became more fitted with smaller sizes and shorter lengths, while skirts continued to be worn wrapped around the waist As the transition to the 18th century began, these fashion trends evolved further.

Compared to earlier periods, the length, width, and sleeves of the jeogori have become shorter and narrower The skirt rises above the waistline, revealing the waist and accentuating the female figure In the 19th century, various parts of women's jeogori were designed with curves to further emphasize femininity The shortest jeogori styles were worn in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, designed to be short enough that they did not fully cover the chest and armpits, necessitating the use of waistbands for modesty The skirts also rose slightly above the waist, highlighting the curves, while their lengths increased slightly In contrast, men's clothing underwent changes in the 18th century, with reductions in width and length compared to the 16th century, alongside the emergence and disappearance of various styles, reflecting the cultural shifts during periods of dynastic and social stability.

The values of stability and practicality have flourished, particularly since the 19th century, as Western culture faced political and economic upheavals This period saw a simplification of clothing styles, leading to more practical and flowing designs By the early 20th century, traditional attire began to coexist with Western clothing, reflecting a blend of cultural influences.

The upper class wore vibrant clothing, while children and young girls donned bright colors, and middle-aged individuals opted for more subdued hues Men dressed more formally by adding knee-length robes when going out In contrast, ordinary citizens were restricted to simple garments made from cotton fibers, and the law mandated that they could only wear white clothing.

The regulations specify that certain colors of clothing are permitted, including light pink, light green, gray, and charcoal, in special circumstances.

Traditional Korean hanbok consists of separate upper and lower garments, with women's hanbok featuring a jeogori and skirt, while men's hanbok includes a jeogori and pants The jeogori is made up of various components, including the length, sleeves, collar, and decorative ties.

The garment features sleeves attached to a section that remains closed at the front center, with the outer and inner sleeves overlapping for added design and functionality.

Wearing a traditional overcoat when going out is a sign of respect Both men and women wear a jeogori and a durumagi, but there are differences in the composition of their hanbok To understand the hanbok's structure, it is essential to examine the variations based on gender.

First, let's explore the components of women's hanbok Women's attire is primarily composed of a jeogori and a chima.

The Jeogori is described in the Encyclopedia of Korean National Culture as the upper garment of Hanbok, designed to wrap around the arms and torso while fastening at the front It is composed of various elements, including the length, collar, sleeves, and ties.

The jeogori features a front opening that is fastened with a belt or ribbon The collar is positioned close to the face, resembling the style of a suit.

The section pertains to the traditional Korean attire known as Hanbok Although the "gye" (깃) is a minor component, it plays a crucial role in shaping the fundamental structure of the Hanbok.

The only straight line forming a diagonal among the curves that make up the structure of the hanbok is the dongjeong This diagonal line enhances the base color of the jeogori and adds a dynamic element to the overall curves.

The collar, known as "git," is a part of the jeogori or outer garment that wraps around the neck and is secured at the front It harmonizes with the sleeves and the side seams, creating a cohesive beauty The "seot" refers to the overlapping section where extra fabric is added to enhance the original length of the jeogori The sleeves of traditional Korean attire, such as jeogori or durumagi, are also significant in this context.

The sleeves of a traditional Korean hanbok are designed to wrap around the arms, with the lower part of the sleeve curving from the cuff to the armpit, known as "baerae." The "goreum" serves to secure the inner and outer layers of the garment, preventing it from slipping off, while also providing the only decorative element that enhances the beauty of the hanbok When the goreum hangs down, it creates flowing curves that highlight the softness of a woman's movements The front curve of the jeogori extends from the armpit to the center front, determining the maximum length that can cover the bust There are various types of women's jeogori, including the "minjeogori," which lacks a decorative band on the collar and goreum, the "banhoejangjeogori," which features a decorative band on the collar, goreum, and cuffs, the "saekdongjeogori" with colorful sleeves, and the "samhoejangjeogori," which has a decorative band extending to the side seams.

A skirt is a woman's lower garment that wraps around the waist beneath the jeogori, consisting of a skirt width, waist, and ties When wearing a skirt, the front is wrapped and tied at the back with a string, which secures the garment The width of the skirt varies depending on the amount of pleating, with more pleats creating a fuller and more elegant appearance The term "dan" refers to the folded edge at the bottom of the skirt Hanbok skirts are categorized based on everyday wear and ceremonial attire, as well as the fabric and production methods used for different seasons For ceremonial wear, types of skirts include saran chima, daeran chima, ut chima, and jeonhang ut chima, along with the distinction of full skirts.

The article discusses two types of skirts: the full skirt and the tube skirt A full skirt features open side panels and is fastened at the waist with a belt In contrast, a tube skirt is constructed as a cylindrical shape, with the fabric sewn together to create a seamless design, and it includes a waistband for a fitted look.

Wearing underwear serves essential functions such as hygiene and warmth When donning a hanbok, it is crucial to wear the right underwear to naturally and beautifully accentuate the curves of the garment In the Joseon Dynasty, women's underwear consisted of various styles.

There are various types of traditional clothing with complex wearing methods The upper garments include the jeogori, worn over a sokjeoksam, and a sokjeogori worn underneath The lower garments are even more diverse, including pants, wide pants, dansokgot, socksokgot, and dalrisokgot Women's pants are designed as underpants worn beneath skirts or dansokgot, differing in style from men's pants.

Men's hanbok typically consists of a jeogori, pants, baejang, vest, magoja, and durumagi This article aims to explore these components in greater detail.

The material of hanbok can signify the social status of the wearer Typically, the hanbok of women from the yangban class was crafted from fine, soft, and lightweight fabric made of ramie fibers, while commoners primarily used cotton textiles.

Traditionally, hanbok fabrics are primarily made from silk and cotton According to the Hanbok Promotion Center, Koreans wear different hanbok materials depending on the season, emphasizing the importance of dressing appropriately for spring, autumn, summer, and winter.

Choosing the right fabric that complements the beauty of traditional materials is essential for maintaining the elegance of Hanbok, especially in spring and autumn Various fabrics such as cotton, silk, and hemp are commonly used, along with other materials like ramie and satin In autumn, fabrics like jacquard, fine silk, and soft silk are also popular choices.

Silk fabrics, such as those used in traditional Korean clothing, have been highly valued for their soft texture and subtle sheen In particular, the use of Jamisa silk is notable for its luxurious feel, making it a popular choice for garments that enhance elegance while walking.

The fabric is characterized by a crisp, rustling sound During summer, it utilizes cool materials such as ramie and hemp to ensure good airflow Additionally, fabrics like hemp, ramie, and cotton are commonly used for summer clothing, providing effective protection against the cold.

During winter, traditional Korean hanbok was commonly made from various fabrics such as cotton, silk, wool, and brocade, including materials like plain cotton, satin, and fine wool.

The colors of hanbok are derived from natural dyeing materials, creating various shades through different dyeing methods Koreans traditionally coordinate the colors of their skirts and jeogori based on the principles of yin-yang and the five elements The five basic colors—blue, red, yellow, white, and black—are directly linked to the energies of these elements As a result, hanbok colors are regarded as elegant and sophisticated Historically, a single dye source could produce a range of colors and patterns For ceremonial attire, men typically wore red, blue, green, and white, while women also embraced these vibrant hues.

Dressed in red, blue, green, white, and yellow, the individual typically wore light colors for casual attire, primarily opting for white and jade green.

The article discusses the traditional colors of hanbok, primarily focusing on navy blue and gray It highlights that in the past, the colors of hanbok carried specific meanings The aim is to briefly explore the significance of these colors in traditional hanbok attire.

The first traditional attire is 'Nokuihongsang,' which consists of a green jeogori and a red skirt, symbolizing 'the beautiful clothing of a young woman.' The green color represents fertility and prosperity, while the red color is believed to ward off evil spirits and negative energy Additionally, green signifies femininity (Yin) and red represents masculinity (Yang), reflecting the harmony of these dualities The second attire includes the saekdong jeogori and yellow jeogori According to the Korean Dictionary of Life, the saekdong jeogori is made from various colored fabrics, traditionally worn by children and young women, often incorporating the five cardinal colors to protect children from evil spirits and wish for their safety The yellow jeogori paired with a bright red skirt is seen as a symbol of unmarried women.

The traditional hanbok consists of a navy skirt While a yellow jeogori and a red skirt symbolize unmarried women, a jade-colored jeogori paired with a navy skirt represents married women This attire is particularly associated with women in their 30s and 40s.

The traditional hanbok has been transformed with more subdued and elegant colors, contrasting with the vibrant hues of the colorful jeogori and the bright yellow garments.

Natural patterns, primarily featuring cloud and sofa designs, encapsulate the beauty of nature The cloud pattern symbolizes longevity, known as "Sijangsaeng." Its organic depiction allows for harmonious integration with other designs.

The pattern used is widely applied and can be described as wave-like This wave pattern conveys a sense of movement and rhythm.

According to the Encyclopedia of Korean Culture and the Encyclopedia of Korean Folklore, hanbok has evolved and changed with the times Since the Joseon Dynasty, Confucian ideals influenced the differentiation of clothing based on gender and social status Following the Treaty of Ganghwa in 1876, Western civilization began to permeate Korean society, marking a significant period in fashion history known as the Enlightenment period During this time, hanbok was modified by considering the advantages of Western clothing and the shortcomings of traditional attire The term "improved hanbok" emerged as traditional hanbok underwent rational modifications In the 1950s and 1960s, influenced by Western culture, improved hanbok partially transformed traditional styles, actively imitating Western designs This era saw shorter jeogori and more rounded curves in the garment's collar and sleeves, emphasizing functionality, practicality, simplification, and ceremonial use By the 1970s, the wearing of hanbok declined, with Western clothing gradually replacing it as everyday attire, leading to a trend where hanbok was primarily worn for special occasions, diminishing its role as everyday wear.

Living hanbok is a modern adaptation of traditional hanbok, simplified for contemporary life since the 1980s It retains the original beauty of traditional hanbok while incorporating functionality and practicality suitable for modern daily life During the 1980s, South Korea experienced economic stability, improved living standards, and a growing interest in culture and clothing Additionally, the early 1980s saw a rise in this interest, particularly among university students.

The "Wearing Our Clothes Movement" has gained popularity, coinciding with the rise of everyday hanbok, which includes traditional styles such as pants-jeogori and skirt-jeogori.

The design of hanbok has evolved to incorporate elements from various historical styles while simplifying them for modern use, such as everyday and active wear In the 1990s, the slogan "What is Korean is global" marked the beginning of the commercialization of everyday hanbok, leading to the emergence of various improved hanbok brands During this time, everyday hanbok became a fashion item for the general public and was even adopted as school uniforms Since 1995, everyday hanbok has represented a blend of traditional and modern aesthetics As a result, everyday hanbok offers greater comfort and functionality compared to traditional hanbok while still preserving its cultural essence.

The article discusses various types of hanbok, including traditional hanbok, modified hanbok, modern hanbok, practical hanbok, and new hanbok It also mentions basic living hanbok, highlighting the diversity and evolution of this traditional Korean attire.

The traditional hanbok retains its fundamental structure and shape while incorporating changes in elements such as the collar, ties, and sleeves.

The Paris Haute Couture shows, including the 2015 Chanel Cruise Collection, showcased modern Hanbok designs On February 20, 2015, during a pre-event for the 87th Academy Awards, designer Jennifer Mok launched Hanbok dresses under the theme "Colorful: Inspired by Korean Colors." Since 2016, the wide-fitting overfit coat, reminiscent of traditional Hanbok garments like the Durumagi and Dpo, has become a popular fashion item among male idols.

Over time, traditional Hanbok has lost its status as everyday wear in modern society, becoming increasingly associated with special occasions such as holidays and ceremonies Additionally, the influence of Western culture has partially affected the design changes in everyday Hanbok However, there has been a recent trend towards simplifying everyday Hanbok.

Designed with a modern sensibility, contemporary hanbok is tailored for active daily life It serves not only for special occasions but also as everyday wear, including street style outfits, school uniforms, pajamas, and formal attire By addressing the discomforts of traditional hanbok, this modern version emphasizes practicality and versatility, making it a functional choice for daily use.

In 2019, the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Education signed a memorandum of understanding to promote the distribution of traditional Korean hanbok uniforms in middle and high schools In 2020, they selected 20 pilot schools to implement this hanbok uniform initiative According to the Ministry of Education's Happy Education magazine, we will examine the hanbok uniforms of several representative middle and high schools.

Since November 16, 2020, students at Daechang Middle School in Yecheon, Gyeongbuk, have been wearing traditional Hanbok uniforms as part of their school life.

The male students wore navy coats adorned with gray trim around the neck, paired with matching gray pants.

The hem of the pants features buttons for ease of movement, making them comfortable for students The ample length of the tops and the loose fit of the bottoms, along with good ventilation, are key advantages of traditional Korean school uniforms Additionally, unnecessary embellishments have been removed, making them suitable for cold weather.

The traditional winter uniform has been replaced with a new fabric for the undergarment Students wear hanbok-style uniforms daily, which require frequent washing; therefore, these uniforms are crafted from durable materials that effectively absorb sweat and allow for good ventilation.

Jangcheon Middle School in Gangjin, Jeonnam, a small institution, has applied for a hanbok uniform distribution project with the hope that students will discover the beauty of hanbok and the charm of hanbok uniforms The students actively participated in the new uniform selection process For the summer uniforms, female students chose wide skirt pants, while male students reinterpreted the traditional hanbok's saebok pants into a modern design The winter uniforms feature the straight lines of hanbok.

The traditional Korean school uniform for girls features a colorful patterned skirt with an elastic waistband for added comfort Made from flexible, wrinkle-resistant materials, the hanbok school uniform is easy to wash and incorporates natural fabrics to ensure safety for the wearer's health.

To select a hanbok-style school uniform, Boeun High School formed a uniform selection committee consisting of students and parents Students exchanged opinions and tried on the hanbok uniforms to address any discomfort While the hanbok school uniform may initially appear similar to traditional uniforms, it incorporates distinctive features of traditional hanbok design.

The students' upper garments feature a collar design reminiscent of traditional jeogori, adorned with the five cardinal colors Boys' pants are designed with a wider fit, while girls' skirts are crafted in a layered style The layered skirts are made from lightweight, breathable materials that do not cling to the body, ensuring comfort while seated Additionally, reinterpretations of traditional norigae embellish the skirts, incorporating designs inspired by the school’s emblematic pine tree and peony.

Hanbok school uniforms are generally categorized into winter and summer styles, with female students having the option to choose from skirts, dresses, skirt-pants, or pants Designed for comfort during over 10 hours of daily wear, the uniforms feature ample lengths and loose fits to ensure ease of movement They are practical and stylish, allowing students to engage in studying, sports, and play without discomfort Additionally, hanbok uniforms are made from functional fabrics that are easy to wash, absorb sweat, and provide good ventilation Initially, students felt excited yet apprehensive about wearing hanbok as school uniforms However, these uniforms blend tradition and modernity, offering a fresh, beautiful, and comfortable option By inheriting the beauty of traditional hanbok and incorporating contemporary designs, they maintain a harmonious feel As opportunities to wear hanbok in daily life decrease, adopting hanbok as school uniforms allows children to naturally become familiar with this cultural attire.

The tunic is primarily worn by farmers, while the ao nam tunic is associated with the nobility, creating a distinction between the two classes Designed for practicality in agricultural work, it features a simple design and a wide shape, making it suitable for both men and women.

Until the early 20th century, the áo dài was very popular, characterized by dark colors achieved through natural dyeing In the 1960s, the áo dài evolved into a more sophisticated form, significantly influencing the style of the áo dài in Vietnam This evolution has allowed the basic shape of the 1960s áo dài to persist to this day The women's áo dài features a long tunic paired with wide, long pants, while the men's version includes a tunic with extended front and back hems reaching the knees, fastened with a button on the right side Typically, the áo dài is crafted from lightweight silk known as 'the' and patterned silk called 'gấm'.

The outfit features a long design with slits on both sides at the waist, complemented by a fitted top adorned with a button on the right side Women typically wear white or matching colored pants with the áo dài, and they often accessorize with a conical hat known as 'nón lá' to shield themselves from the sun and rain.

Over time, the male ao dai has gradually faded from memory, while the female ao dai continues to thrive with its traditional designs.

The ao dai, a traditional Vietnamese garment, beautifully expresses the elegance and sensuality of Vietnamese women while maintaining its charm through various materials and styles Today, the ao dai is commonly worn during festivals, weddings, and other significant events, serving as a symbol of Vietnam at international beauty contests Notably, in the central and southern regions of Vietnam, female students often wear the ao dai as their school uniform Additionally, many restaurants, cafes, and hotels have adopted the ao dai as the uniform for their female staff.

Vietnam Airlines is well-known for using the blue ao dai as the uniform for its flight attendants.

With the advancement of time, the modified ao dai has emerged, addressing the discomforts of traditional ao dai while preserving its beauty This modern version, which maintains tradition while offering comfort, has garnered the attention and affection of many women The modified ao dai features shorter hems and sleeves, along with altered collars, and has introduced a variety of new and unique colors and designs that have gained popularity In the past, the color of women's ao dai reflected their age and marital status, with unmarried women typically wearing white and married women opting for bold, dark colors However, today, women can choose from vibrant colors like pink, red, and yellow, as well as lighter pastel tones based on their preferences Despite this variety, many Vietnamese women still favor the pure white ao dai Additionally, in modern life, the modified ao dai is increasingly worn with jeans and sneakers, becoming a staple in everyday fashion.

This article explores the traditional Korean hanbok and the Vietnamese ao dai, aiming to compare these two cultural garments Both hanbok and ao dai serve as significant cultural symbols that reflect the identities of their respective nations, Korea and Vietnam.

During significant events such as holidays and weddings, traditional attire has been commonly worn Both Koreans and Vietnamese express their respect for ancestors by donning traditional clothing on special occasions Hanbok and Ao Dai are garments that can be worn by individuals of all ages and genders.

Traditional clothing features various designs and materials, yet the patterns in the garments from both countries often include motifs such as flowers and leaves.

Traditional garments like Hanbok and Ao Dai showcase a variety of natural patterns and animal motifs, such as dragons and phoenixes, enhancing the beauty of those who wear them Over time, both Hanbok and Ao Dai have evolved in terms of materials, fabrics, designs, and colors, while still preserving their unique beauty In modern times, individuals can choose traditional attire in colors, patterns, and materials that resonate with their personal style Despite numerous changes, Hanbok and Ao Dai remain essential elements of contemporary life in their respective cultures.

This article aims to compare the traditional Korean hanbok and the Vietnamese ao dai by examining four key elements: structure, materials, colors, and patterns.

In traditional Korean attire, women's hanbok typically consists of a jeogori (jacket) and a chima (skirt), while men's hanbok is made up of a jeogori and baji (trousers).

The jeogori consists of several components, including the length, sleeves, collar, cuffs, and the goreum It can cover the chest or waist length.

The article discusses women's skirts, which are short enough to be stylish and comfortable It highlights that skirts are a type of lower garment worn around the waist by women, contrasting with men's pants, which are typically wider and designed differently.

The traditional attire features wide and fitted pant legs, with both men and women wearing a traditional overcoat when going out The beauty of the hanbok is significantly enhanced by its undergarments, which are voluminous and help to naturally and beautifully express the curves of the body The hanbok harmonizes curves and straight lines In the case of the Vietnamese ao dai, the men's version consists of a long top that extends above the knee and wide, ankle-length pants, designed for comfort and ease of movement The women's ao dai, on the other hand, accentuates the natural lines of the female body The ao dai is tailored to complement the wearer's figure.

The áo dài is crafted to fit the body perfectly by precisely measuring 18 different body parts Unlike the men's version, the women's áo dài is designed to hug the body closely and features side slits, highlighting the natural curves of a woman's figure Historically, the sleeves of the áo dài extended to the wrists, but modern women's áo dài now typically have three-quarter sleeves.

The design has been updated with puff sleeves, and the ao dai's collar, which originally fit tightly around the neck, has been modified for greater comfort.

The ao dai has been designed with various necklines such as round neck, stand collar, and boat neck Unlike the hanbok, the ao dai consists of a single layer of fabric.

The hanbok is lighter and more form-fitting compared to the ao dai, featuring a two-layer design that is wide and loose Additionally, wearing a hanbok involves a more complex dressing process and requires various accessories.

In historical Korea, the color, pattern, and material of hanbok were used to distinguish social classes, with the upper class wearing garments made from fine fabrics like hemp or lightweight silk, while commoners were limited to clothing made from ordinary cotton Today, hanbok is crafted from various materials, including ramie, cotton, muslin, silk, and satin In the past, the upper class adorned themselves in elaborate hanbok, with bright colors designated for children and young girls, while softer hues were worn by middle-aged individuals Modern hanbok continues to reflect this rich heritage.

Traditional hanbok retains its colors, patterns, and materials while adapting to modern lifestyles, often incorporating eco-friendly fabrics Today, individuals can choose hanbok colors and designs that resonate with their personal tastes The traditional ao dai is made from durable silk fibers known for their warmth, but modern ao dai typically utilizes soft, smooth, and affordable satin fabric For middle-aged individuals, thicker and luxurious velvet is commonly preferred The trousers of the ao dai are made to match the color of the top or are crafted in white or light shades using satin Men tend to favor ao dai in subtle tones or bright, non-flamboyant colors, with darker shades of blue becoming more prevalent today compared to the past, which favored white, black, or deep blue Women enjoy a wider variety of colors for their ao dai, with options available for any occasion.
