Trang 11 INTRODUCTION
1.1 The reason of selecting the topic
In the era of globalization, the importance of English as a global lingua franca is indisputable It functions as a critical medium for international communication, enabling knowledge transfer and professional collaboration across disciplines such as science, technology, education, and healthcare As a result, proficiency
in English has become essential for academic and career success
Among the four key language skills, reading plays a particularly vital role It notonly enhances vocabulary and reinforces grammatical understanding but also fosters learners’ ability to comprehend complex information in context In
Vietnam, reading comprehension constitutes a significant portion of the NationalHigh School Graduation Examination, highlighting the need for students to develop efficient reading strategies
At Tinh Gia 3 High School, many students regard reading comprehension as both important and difficult A prevailing issue is the ineffective use of
strategies, including literal translation and unstructured reading, which often leads to confusion and poor time management Furthermore, the lack of
exposure to authentic multiple-choice reading tasks in standard textbooks limits students’ familiarity with question types and exam techniques
Drawing on my experience in preparing Grade 12 students for high-stakes
examinations, I have found that explicitly teaching question types and tailoring materials for exam practice significantly improves reading efficiency and test performance
Motivated by these observations, I developed and implemented an educational
initiative titled "Effective Methods for Enhancing 12th Graders’ Performance in Multiple-Choice Reading Comprehension at Tinh Gia 3 High School." This
project seeks to equip students with practical, strategic tools to approach readingcomprehension tasks more confidently and successfully
1.2 Objectives, tasks, methodology and scope of research
Develop strategies to actively engage and motivate students in improving their reading abilities
1
Trang 21.2.2 Research Objectives
Investigate the underlying causes that hinder students’ success in choice reading comprehension tasks
multiple- Integrate the proposed methods into classroom teaching, followed by
analysis through comparison and evaluation of outcomes
Assess and draw conclusions on the effectiveness and applicability of the implemented strategies
1.2.3 Research Methodology
This research is grounded in the following methods:
Theoretical analysis: Review of relevant literature and existing frameworks
related to reading comprehension instruction
Empirical investigation: Data collection through observation, student
feedback, and performance analysis
Practical application: Implementation of the proposed methods in actual
English lessons at Tinh Gia 3 High School
Comparative and evaluative techniques: Comparing results pre- and
post-implementation to measure the impact and effectiveness of the approach
1.2.4 Scope of Research
The study primarily concentrates on:
Exploring and applying effective methods to develop students’ reading comprehension skills, with an emphasis on improving performance in
"Reading is a mechanical process in which the eyes receive the message and the brain interprets its meaning" (Harmer, 1989, p 153)
From these definitions, it can be inferred that reading is a complex linguistic skill, with its highest demand being the ability to comprehend and process the entire message conveyed by a written text Reading comprehension serves as a bridge between passive reading and active reading—shifting the focus from merely decoding letters and vocabulary to understanding context and discourse Poor reading comprehension impairs this process, causing readers to expend excessive time and cognitive effort on decoding vocabulary rather than grasping its meaning
2.1.2 Reality
Reading comprehension constitutes a foundational skill within secondary
education and is a pivotal component of both national and international languageassessments In Vietnam’s upper-secondary English curriculum, reading is consistently integrated across all units from Grades 10 to 12, in both standard and advanced tracks, underscoring its curricular significance
Trang 3Nonetheless, pedagogical practice reveals a disparity between curricular
emphasis and instructional effectiveness Although textbook-based activities incorporate reading tasks, these predominantly serve to reinforce vocabulary andgrammar, rather than to cultivate higher-order comprehension, inferential
reasoning, or strategic reading Texts are frequently treated as passive input rather than as platforms for critical engagement Consequently, students are insufficiently equipped to navigate complex texts, particularly under timed examconditions
Empirical evidence from classroom observations and teacher surveys indicates areliance on traditional instructional practices—such as reading aloud or silent reading followed by factual recall—rather than the implementation of
metacognitive or strategy-based instruction Moreover, teacher education
programs often prioritize general lesson planning at the expense of focused training in reading pedagogy
Learner resistance to dense or lexically challenging texts further hampers
reading engagement Addressing these challenges necessitates a shift toward interactive, strategy-oriented instruction informed by cognitive learning
principles and learner-centered methodologies
The urgency of reform is accentuated by changes to the Vietnamese National High School Graduation Examination, effective from 2025 The revised format reduces test length (50 to 40 questions, 60 to 50 minutes), eliminates phonetic and grammatical transformation sections, and significantly increases the
proportion of reading comprehension, which now constitutes over 60% of the test Importantly, the new assessment emphasizes functional literacy through authentic materials, such as public notices and flyers
These reforms reflect a systemic transition toward communicative competence, positioning reading comprehension as a critical dimension of language
proficiency Following the release of the new exam format, two Grade 12
classes (12A5 and 12A6) were administered a trial version, with results
presented below
This is the results of 90 students
Table 2.1: The results of sample test

Poverty (0-2)
The data reveal that the overall reading comprehension ability of the students remains limited This distribution indicates that more than 60% of the students are struggling significantly with reading comprehension tasks, suggesting a pressing need for targeted interventions and instructional support to strengthen this essential skill area
However, it is unfortunate to note that the majority of students performed poorly
on the two reading comprehension tasks, consisting of 8 and 10 questionsrespectively, with a high number of incorrect responses

to address varying proficiency levels across the cohort
sentences), while fewer remained in the lower bands (7–8 and below)
This suggests that the reading comprehension strategies or teaching methods implemented had a positive impact on student performance
3 CONCLUSION AND PROPOSAL
3.1 Conclusion
Mastery of reading skills plays a pivotal role in the overall development of English language learners Through engagement with reading texts, learners are exposed to diverse topics including global issues, culture, science, technology, and the arts—thereby expanding their world knowledge In addition, proficient reading ability significantly supports the acquisition of other language skills, such as writing and speaking, and facilitates the internalization of vocabulary and grammatical structures
The classification of comprehension question types and the pedagogical
adaptation of reading passages from textbooks contribute to reducing cognitive load and anxiety among students This, in turn, enhances their ability to identify correct answers efficiently and with greater accuracy during reading tasks
3.2 Proposal
3.2.1 Recommendations for Teachers:
Adapt reading passages from textbooks to reflect the format and content of national high school graduation examinations This alignment allows students toengage in targeted practice and builds their confidence in handling multiple-choice reading comprehension tasks
Implement diverse instructional strategies to motivate students to expand their vocabulary effectively and meaningfully
3.2.2 Recommendations for Students:
