Trang 3PART I: INTRODUCTION 1.1 Rationale
In the context of ongoing educational reforms, the integration of technology into teaching and learning processes is no longer a temporary trend Still, it has become an essential requirement to enhance the quality of education This is particularly true in English language teaching, where vocabulary plays a pivotal role as the foundation for the development of students' language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing However, in practice, many Grade 10 students continue to struggle with the retention and flexible application of vocabulary The primary cause of this challenge lies in traditional approaches: teaching vocabulary in isolation, lacking context, interaction, and effective tools for spaced repetition — a critical factor for long-term retention
In response to this issue, this initiative proposes the application of the online platform Yourhomework.net for teaching and learning English vocabulary for Grade 10 students This modern learning tool integrates well with the 2018 General Education Curriculum, emphasizing competency-based teaching methods and a learner-centered approach Yourhomework.net not only enables teachers to design interactive vocabulary exercises but also allows students to engage in personalized learning, with regular practice and instant feedback Furthermore, it provides teachers with a comprehensive and effective way to monitor individual student progress
The innovative aspect of this study lies in its ability to connect the formal curriculum with digital technology, transforming vocabulary teaching from a passive, rote memorization approach to an active, meaningful usage model Additionally, this platform opens opportunities for creating a shared library of exercises for teachers, saving time, fostering collaboration, and improving teaching quality
This initiative not only meets the demand for innovation in language teaching with a competency development focus but also demonstrates tangible effectiveness through practical implementation: students are more engaged, retain vocabulary better, experience reduced learning pressure, and show noticeable improvement in their academic performance Therefore, this topic is highly relevant and practical, with potential for expansion and application across different grade levels, contributing to the creation of a more positive, modern, and effective English learning environment in secondary schools
For that reason, to help students effectively develop their vocabulary
skills, I decided to do the research entitled " "Enhancing Grade 10 Students' English Vocabulary Acquisition through the Yourhomework.net Platform in alignment with the 2018 General Education Curriculum." as a subject of the
experience initiative I hope to receive a lot of positive feedback as well as spread it to my colleagues, to help improve the overall goal of education in other parts of the country
1.2 Objectives of the measures
The measure is carried out with the following objectives:
- To explore practical methods of using Yourhomework.net to support
Trang 4vocabulary instruction in Grade 10
- To guide teachers in creating, adapting, and assigning vocabulary learning tasks aligned with Global Success textbook units
- To evaluate the effectiveness of these methods in improving student vocabulary knowledge and engagement
1.3 Scope of research
- The scope of the study is 10th-grade students of Hau Loc 4 High School in the school year 2024-2025, using the Global Success English textbook The participants of the research consist of 95 students from two classes 10A7, and 10A9 It focuses on vocabulary learning across selected units within the first semester
1.4 New factors of the measure
This measure introduces three key innovations First, it integrates a digital platform into a traditionally textbook-based approach, making vocabulary learning more interactive and flexible Second, it enables personalized learning via QR codes and direct links, allowing students to access tasks anytime, anywhere Third, it offers real-time tracking of student progress, empowering teachers to make timely and data-driven instructional decisions
1.5 Structure of the research
The research paper consists of three main parts: The introduction part states the reasons, context, and scope of the topic In the content of the study, the author outlines the elements of practical reasoning and methods of solving the problem, and the effectiveness of the problem In the conclusion, the author gives an overview of the topic conclusions and some suggestions for developing research
PART II: CONTENT 2.1 Theoretical Foundation
This study aims to explore effective strategies for teaching vocabulary to Grade 10 students using the Yourhomework.net platform Therefore, the theoretical foundation must align to improve students’ vocabulary acquisition, retention, and practical usage through innovative, technology-enhanced methods In particular, this approach is strongly aligned with the 2018 General Education Curriculum in Vietnam, which emphasizes the development of learners’ communicative competence, autonomous learning skills, and the ability to apply language knowledge in real-life contexts The integration of digital platforms like Yourhomework.net not only modernizes traditional vocabulary teaching but also supports the curriculum’s orientation towards active, student-centered, and competency-based education
Vocabulary is a fundamental component of language proficiency and plays a critical role in students’ academic success As Paul Nation (2001) emphasizes, vocabulary knowledge encompasses more than word meanings—it includes spelling, pronunciation, grammatical behavior, and contextual usage For Grade 10 learners, whose vocabulary needs to support both general communication and academic tasks, a structured yet engaging approach is essential
Trang 5Michael Lewis’s Lexical Approach (1993) provides a relevant framework for this study by prioritizing the learning of collocations and lexical chunks over isolated words This method is particularly beneficial for high school learners, as
it promotes more natural and fluent language use Similarly, Stephen Krashen’s Input Hypothesis (1985) supports the idea that students acquire vocabulary most effectively when exposed to slightly challenging but understandable language input in meaningful contexts
Given the digital-native nature of today’s students, integrating technology into vocabulary instruction is not just effective—it is necessary The Yourhomework.net platform offers interactive tasks, gamified learning experiences, and personalized practice that enhance motivation and engagement Godwin-Jones (2018) notes that such digital tools promote active learning environments, allowing learners to practice vocabulary in immersive and varied contexts
The flipped learning model further supports this approach by enabling students to learn vocabulary at their own pace outside of the classroom and apply it during in-class activities Thornton and Houser (2005) highlight that this model fosters self-directed learning and continuous progress tracking—key components for vocabulary retention
In addition, contextualized learning is crucial As McCarthy & O’Dell (2008) assert, vocabulary learned in meaningful contexts is remembered longer and used more confidently Thornbury (2002) reinforces this by advocating for interactive, communicative activities that involve real-life language use
Aligned with the study’s purpose, this theoretical foundation supports a shift from traditional rote learning to a more dynamic, student-centered approach By integrating the Lexical Approach, Input Hypothesis, and digital learning platforms such as Yourhomework.net, this study seeks to enhance the effectiveness of vocabulary instruction for Grade 10 students, ultimately boosting their language proficiency and communication skills
2.2 Practical Basis
In actual teaching practice at many high schools, Grade 10 students often struggle to memorize and apply English vocabulary, especially when exposed to traditional methods such as copying word lists, rote memorization, or doing mechanical exercises These approaches tend to be monotonous, lack practicality, and result in poor retention and limited ability to use vocabulary flexibly in speaking or writing tasks
At the same time, teachers face significant challenges in designing personalized vocabulary lessons due to limited instructional time, large class sizes, and a lack of tools to monitor individual learning progress effectively
In this context, the online learning platform Yourhomework.net emerges as a practical and effective solution With a rich library of customizable exercises and the ability to deliver immediate feedback, this platform enables teachers to assign vocabulary tasks tailored to different proficiency levels and themes The integration of Yourhomework.net not only addresses the above challenges but also aligns with the 2018 General Education Curriculum in Vietnam, which
Trang 6emphasizes the development of learner autonomy, digital literacy, and the ability
to apply language in real-life contexts
This school year, I am in charge of two 10th-form classes: 10A7 and 10A9 After some lessons, I observed students’ performances and realized that students often show a lack of engagement and do not have an overview of the topic, have not demonstrated autonomy in their learning, so the class time has not been effective
The following chart will show data on surveying 10th-grade students’ attitudes and results of vocabulary tests before applying the measure:
